They've alleviated pain, saved crops and blasted into space, to name just a few of their long list of accomplishments. We're celebrating Black History Month with a new video featuring five black chemists who changed the world!
The video highlights the work of icons like astronaut and chemical engineer Mae Jemison, the first woman of color to go into space, as well as Percy Julian, a pioneer in synthesizing materials from plants, including a glaucoma drug from beans, a firefighting foam from soy protein and an arthritis treatment still used to treat millions of patients today.
Video by Sean Parsons
Narration and Script by Noel Waghorn
Series created by Adam Dylewski
Produced by the American Chemical Society and the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE)

I am white skinned, but I am African-American. I grew up in Congo, Africa and came here when I was 18. My parents and my grandparents were missionaries in Congo. My grandma rescued a Congolese baby girl whose mother and father had died, and, although the Congolese would have left her to die behind a bush because they had not ever developed a way to feed babies, my grandmother did the laborious work of caring for goats so that she could have the milk to feed the baby. My aunt Mary became a nurse and about 15 years ago she came here to Oregon and three years ago she became an American citizen. So now she is African-American too. She is black-skinned. When our Creator made Adam and Eve, he put a wide range of genetic material into the code that directs the formation of our beings, and though, through separation into tribes we think there are differences, we actually have more we share than not. Different amounts of melanin do not define race. There is the race of mankind, then we have tribes and nations. The Bible says that God created mankind, and all the hoaxes of the past 150 years from the evolution story have caused much confusion. But, Praise God, there are those who search for truth, and then find God, such as Peter Hitchens, who was raised atheist and finally was, "dragged kicking and screaming to Jesus Christ by the sheer weight of scientific evidence." a couple of hoaxes I have discovered--a black man, Ota Benga, a pygmy from Congo, was housed in the Bronx Zoo in 1904 for over a year as the "missing link." Although it was disproven as a fraudulent drawing in the same year it was put out to the public, Haekel's assemblage of drawings purporting to be embryos of like form, was included in textbooks for the next 100+ years. Hoaxes abound. I won't name them all. Just encourage you to search out the scientist just fired for finding a dinosaur with unfossilized tissue in the horn (showing young age). Those who find things that show the truth are censored and ostracized. If the search is actually for reality, truth, why the censorship? Evolutionists say they own reality, materialism, yet they can't allow an even playing table because their side has no legs. Even Darwin knew he was no scientist, stated that his eventual inclusion in the Botanical Society was a joke, because he was no scientist. New book, "Darwin's Doubt." Older book, Darwin's Black Box. The Answers magazine for general public, also has a peer review magazine for scientists. The Creation Museum. Peruvian stones that show dinosaurs and humans working and existing together. How did those ancient Peruvians know what a dinosaur looked like if they were extinct? How did the Bible writers know what dinosaurs were if they were extinct? The book of Job contains accurate descriptions.

We say racism is bad, yet here is another example of labeling a group of individuals by their skin color. If when we look at individuals and see their color first, we will never rid ourselves of racism.

That is true, but you know that this list was to highlight the achievements of a group that has been opposed throughout the years.

I find this video highly patronising to a whole race of people. In fact I find the whole idea of black history month to be a dated view on how to remember history. It is human history filled with people of all colours and cultures. In this case celebrate the great achievements by individual scientists and not pat them on the back because they did it having a dark completion.

Teachers are looking for material to show students that there are people in the science industry who look like them. I wince too when it stuff like this is shown for Black History Month which is why I'm trying to show it all the time. Why isn't there more material out there. If our students never see black scientists then they might think they just do not exist.
