The liquid from the pineapple and the mandarin oranges can be heated up with cornstarch or tapioca to make a delightful sauce for a cake or pie.

I learned this recipe from my Grandmother, as all of her family did. I have made this many times over the years with one addition. I add a whole jar of drained and dried cherries to the mix. No so pink after draining and drying them, but adds beautiful color and taste.

That's how my mom made it too...with sour cream and crushed pineapple but no coconut. It's is definitely part of our traditional holiday meals. Somewhere along the line, someone said the marshmallows turn to puffed air...so we've called it "air salad" ever since...lol

My mother-in-law taught me to make this! We made it a tiny bit differently -- crushed pineapple instead of chunk, and SOUR CREAM instead of Cool Whip! It cuts just a little of the sweetness and gives the coverage like you describe. And my husband made it a six cup salad by adding pecan pieces! Thanks for bringing back a great memory!

My mom made this every TG too! Only she used diced apples instead of pineapple, sour cream instead of cool whip and she added chopped walnuts and maraschino cherries (chopped very finely and only about 1/2 cup). I didn’t care for sweet cherries either so I always picked them out. (The cherries made it “pretty & did not turn it pink) It was so yummy!!! Great memories… Thanks for sharing! ❤️🙏🙏❤️

This salad does bring back memories! I'm more health-conscious these days but still love to add pineapple or other fruit to salads--mandarin oranges are a great color for Thanksgiving. And to this day carrot salad is one of my favorites - with the original raisin, or dried cranberries.

My grandmother made it with the sour cream also ... she also held out a few orange slices to make a flower on top with maraschino cherry center - and a few sprinkled on top! Oh, and she called it 5-C salad and when I was a little kid, i always thought she meant 5 Sea ... I tried for years to figure out the 5 seas each ingredient came from. I can't wait to have it again at Thanksgiving!

We call this *HEAVENLY HASH.* I've been making grandma's recipe for 50 years. Certainly not quick. It calls for a pineapple/lemon juice custard sauce made the day ahead. Mini marshmallows & whipped cream are folded into the cooled custard and refrigerated overnight. The acidity makes them melt-in-your-mouth soft at serving time. The fruit, except for pineapple tidbits and the mandarins, is fresh. Next day the well drained fruit is gently folded in. Many families have their own version of Ambrosia, and I'm sure they're all delicious. 😋

@@lauraklein6405:My dad's family, from Germany originally, settled in Wisconsin and bought a little resort on a lake which grandma, grandpa and all 5 kids ran. Growing up in the 50'a I never even knew any families that served something like 'Heavenly Hash' at their holiday dinners. Funny how this fruit salad is served in many homes but there are all sorts of different names for it, and recipes. Ambrosia does sound so much classier that Heavenly Hash I think. 😊Try your hand at it and see if your family loves it as much as others do. If you have trouble finding a recipe that matches your memories I'm willing to share mine. Thanks for responding, Laura.

@@ginawiggles918 thank you! Well, my uncle had some German heritage so maybe that’s where it originated from in my family tradition 🤷‍♀️. I’ve searched for a few years and couldn’t find it and would love to try yours! Thank you again 😊

@@lauraklein6405: I was searching last night & saw one recipe using vanilla pudding & whipped cream. Might be easier, but anyway, here's mine. Just keep in mind, JUICE is your enemy when it comes to adding fruit. So drain it well. *"HEAVENLY HASH"* *THE CUSTARD* Cook until thickened in double boiler over hot (not boiling) water (med/low heat) whisking slowly as it thickens.(about 10-15 min) 3/4 Cup pineapple juice 1/4 Cup lemon juice 1 T. reg flour 2 T. white sugar Pinch salt When thickened enough to coat a spoon, in a separate bowl Whisk well : *4 (room temp) egg yolks* ~then add to the custard mixture. Cook another 5 minutes or so, still stirring/ whisking slowly on LOW heat (don't want it to curdle) It WILL eventually thicken. Then remove from heat & pour into a separate bowl. *Cover the custard with plastic wrap making CONTACT with the custard to prevent a "skin" forming.* Refrigerate until completely cold (3-4 hrs?) *When custard is cold:* Use electric mixer to whip: 1 Pint heavy whipping cream PLUS 1T (Light Colored) Karo Corn Syrup until stiff peaks form. Transfer cooled custard into a larger bowl and gently "fold" in the whipped cream thoroughly. To this mixture ~ *ADD: 1/2 lb Mini Marshmallows & gently combine everything. *REFRIGERATE SEVERAL HOURS* (I do overnight so I have time to prep and drain all the fruit well...THEN refrigerate that as well. *1-2 HRS BEFORE SERVING:* Gently FOLD IN your well-drained fruit & other items. Some use sweetened flaked coconut, walnuts or pecans. (I don't because of allergies) Any fresh fruit that tend to turn brown (bananas, apples, pears etc) can be sprinkled with some lemon to prevent that. I tend to use mainly use canned pineapple tidbits, mandarin oranges, fresh grapes, fresh cherries if available. You can use Maraschino cherries but they can turn everything pink.... if you dry them well in paper towels you can try them. Kids DO enjoy them & they're festive. Sometimes I go fancy and decorate the top with more whipped cream piped on with a pastry bag & a star tip....but not necessary. And a container of store-bought whipped cream squirted on will look just as nice if you decide to go that route. If there are leftovers refrigerate them. They will keep a day or two then start to get a bit soupy. Laura, I'm in the U.S. so if you are in another country with different cooking terms, products, or measurements, feel free to ask....I'll do my best to answer any questions. I know the recipe sounds daunting but it's just a bunch of steps rather than being especially difficult. Good luck. You could start with one of the faster recipes and see how you like them. Lots of people DO! Best wishes for your holiday season and Happy Cooking! ❤Gina in So Cal.

This soooo good. I add maraschino cherries…only if I have them…without them…it is delicious.

I make this with pineapple jello in a mold and I put the maraschino cherries on the bottom so when it turns out of the mold they are decorative on the top. Yum!

I would think the Jello changes the consistency of it from what this is. But we love pineapple, and this is a flexible recipe, so there's lots of room for changes to it. Thanks so much for watching our channel. We really do appreciate it.

We always had this for all our holidays too. The only difference was she used sour cream instead of cool whip. Also my husband just said colored mini marshmallow to make it festive for the holiday recipes. We enjoy all your cooking shows. Thanks.

I love sour cream, but I think I'd prefer the sweetness of the cool whip. But I'd give it a try! The colored mini marshmallows is a great idea!

I make this salad but when l came across this recipe it asked for one cup of sour cream. My family loves this, and it tastes just as good good with the sour cream.
