Poor nick really believed he was going to get all that the tories promised him, instead he sold out, and even worse he betrayed students throughout the countries.... His political career died at that very moment.

Another Labour coalition would have gone against the will of the people in 2010 who wanted Brown out. The Lib Dem’s did the right thing

Also, mathematically Lib Dems and the Tories were perfect numbers. Tories on 306 MPs, Lib Dems on 57. Put together they zoomed past the 326 mark for an overall majority. Labour on 258, Lib Dems on 57 there was no majority at all at 315, they would be relying on the SDLP, SNP etc to scrape a slim majority or lead a Lab/Lib Dem Minority government which would be totally unstable. Agreed?

Even though people could barely imagine Cameron and Clegg coming together in a coalition, It was pretty certain. In 2010 that Labour were heading for the exit. Clegg got pasted in the end for going with the Tories but if he went with Labour he would have got even worse abuse and the Tories would have won a September election with cuts that would have been far deeper than those that had happened. Also don't forget how close the coalition came to being reelected in 2015. The exit poll said 10 seats for the Lib Dems and 316 for the Tories, so they could have carried on together with a majority of 2. It just so happened that Cleggs voters plumped for Cameron in the dying hours of the campaign.

James Brown They couldn't join with Labour. 258+57 does not equal 326 or higher.

Well, they would have gambled on how the other parties would have voted. A majority would actually have been 323 considering the Speaker and Sinn Fein don't count, meaning only 645 seats were really in play. They would have been short by 8 - the SDLP would have given them another 3, APNI another 1, the SNP another 6, and they could have got things done in the House.

Except of course there is probably no way that the Lib Dems would have done another coalition with the Tories (or probably anyone else for that matter) with just 10 or so seats. Had they held onto 30 or so seats then it would have been another matter. So in fact the Coalition didn't come anywhere close to being re-elected.

Nicks an interesting case - people are able to both not care about him and also completely loathe the spineless git all at once. Amazing really.

When you look at the cuts made to budgets from 2010 to 2014, you can see the Liberal Democrats did hold back the Conservatives from cutting even further. If George Osborne had had his way in a majority Conservative government in 2010, another £1 billion of cuts would have been implemented. Lib Dems stopped that. So we can't be too hard on them - even though yes you are right, they got butchered by the tory scum later on.

This is the beginning of the 8 year nightmare we've had to put up with; but at least the sloppy centrist consensus is well and truly breaking down. Over the next few years the country will go either further to the right (hard brexit, more racist/xenophobic policies) or go left and build something resembling a civilized society.

Mary Moon ..... yeah nobody cuts money from the poor, disabled like the Tories. Nobody frezzes wages like the tories and then votes themselves a pay increase. Your a great supporter of destroying the nation. So how pension going, what no increase ? What a shame, your the only one to blame.
