I live in the suburbs of Sydney Australia and I try to take advantage of my NSW Seniors travel card as much as I can. This allows me to visit our beautiful City and our magnificent harbour for a max of $2.50 AUD per day. I can travel all day long on all buses, trains and ferries for the one price of $2.50. It saves on petrol, tolls and parking which can all add up to quite a bit of money. Last Sunday I took advantage of a free jazz concert at the NSW Governors home in Sydney overlooking Sydney Harbour. The Navy band was playing, and we took our own lunch to eat while we listened to some fantastic jazz music. The weather on the day was magnificent, the gardens were stunning, and The Governor of NSW came around and spoke to a many people as she could while we listened to a fantastic singer and the band who all belong to the Australian Navy. It was a very special day and very cheap entertainment. The week before we took a ferry to Manly and did the walk around the North Head while taking our own picnic lunch. If you look around, you can find plenty of cheap or free entertainment.

Do a deep dive of every single piece of food you have in the house, then sit down and go through every penny u have and work out what you could make and what you need. February is a short month, so I'd highly recommend using as a way to get on top on things, do a NO Spends and NO unnecessary Treats, it's the 5th February, from Monday we have 23 days. Cut back, stick to the basics, as and just what you need. Then start fresh in March. Hopefully the weather is starting to get a bit warmer..

Following a no spend January I will be doing a no spend February I will also be doing a pantry/freezer challenge.I have still got plenty of food in the freezer/ pantry, plenty of cleaning/laundry supply and also a good stock of toiletries. Over January,February, March I am hoping to save £1000 to pay for some house renovations.

This is an unusual February for us. Husband just had major surgery. Thought he could go back to work in 3-4 weeks, but it looks like it will be 6 months or maybe never. We’re trying to figure out his recovery and how life is going to work/ look like from now on. One thing we plan to redo this month is our Will. Not to be morbid, but to be responsible and have peace of mind. 😉

Bought a second hand chafing dish for emergency cooking in a power failure for $10. Put a sign up that I wanted some muffin tins+ a Bundt pan a few months ago on our Senior housing bulletin board. Recently, a man called to say he had both items that I could have for free!

I need to get a car maintenance schedule going. In Canada with all the inclement weather, this is a must. I also need to clean and check over my washer and dryer. As well, my sewing machine needs a going over. We need to look for wood to make raised beds for our vegetable garden; and I recycle yarn and want to sell online, so I am going to hunt for full fashioned sweaters to unravel and prepare for sale, as well as secondhand yarn and fabric.

Great ideas for February, Jane. Some of the things I like to do in Feb: review my house maintenance list and plan some maintenance tasks for the month, and for the year ahead. Sort my seeds, order any more I may need, plan to use up what I already have, and plan my garden planting year. I keep a garden notebook which makes that an easy task but this month is a good time to do that. I will also tidy up and clean the greenhouse if needed, ready for spring, and check on plant pots, tools etc to make sure we have what we need when it's time for planting. This month I also look at our frozen (home grown) fruit in the freezer and actively plan how to use it up by about May. So I often make a batch of freezer jam/jelly this month and plan another round of winter fruit puddings. Also in February a regular inexpensive outing we enjoy is a trip to see the snowdrops (a n annual local option here, with a country house that has a wonderful display and runs Snowdrop Sundays through February). This is always a lovely winter walk and includes tea and home made cake at the village hall. It's a great fundraiser for local charities too so we are pleased to support it. Many places offer 'winter walk' type events about now, sometimes as small local fundraisers, it's always worth looking for something similar in your area as a way to be out and about in February without needing to spend much.

It hot here in Australia. Go on a hunt for free mangoes from wild trees. I’ll freeze the cheeks for smoothiesp and make mango chutney as well. Yum. Put icy water on my orchids, They need the shock from the ice to. Trick them into flowering in spring. Get the soil ready for winter/spring vegetables. Thoroughly clean out the chicken shed and wash the girls. Perhaps I’ll find the courage to get to my hoard once the humidity eases and I have some energy again. Plan camping trips away and who I can get to housesit. Otherwise enjoy the beach, swim twice a day and count my blessings.

February is the month we plan for the trips we will take during the rest of the year. Reservations for many campgrounds open up at the end of the month. Given the increase in campers since COVID, it's become harder to find spots to camp in state and national parks. Our state is one of a very small number that allows free camping for disabled people in its state parks, so we really appreciate it and use it when we can. Half-price camping is available in many, if not all national parks as well, and these discounts really help us to get out and enjoy nature. Planning now also gives me time to find someone to water the garden, etc, while we are gone on our jaunts.

Where I am in Australia, this is our hottest month so it’s a pretty lazy month for me. Also a tight month financially so another no spend month. Thanks for the maintenance reminder. I stopped the video to set up my furnace/air conditioner inspection and cleaning. I am planting my onions this week, the potatoes next week, and sweet potatoes the week after. Then, if the weather is warm enough, will start planting the rest of my plants. I am in zone 8 in the US, so this is the time to start. The best time to go to local events is this month and next month before the tourists begin to arrive.

Such excellent ideas--very motivating! Thank you! We'll be finishing up garden planning and starting seedlings and looking for secondhand or deeply discounted winter coats for our kids in the next size up. Also, this is the month we pull together all of the needed documents for filing our taxes (U.S.), and I see the piece of tape I stuck to my vacuum cleaner says that February is one of the months I need to clean the filters! Also I have started doing a ten minute decluttering of some area in the house each day.

February has just produced 2 (-41C) nights here in Eastern Ontario. I had installed plastic over the windows and changed summer curtains to heavy thermal curtains in all the large windows on the main floor. Despite this, the wood cookstove in the kitchen and the living room fireplace still failed to maintain the temperatures above 60F at night. The furnace (propane) is back up. It was running full tilt. Even then I saw that the temperature of the house dipped to 55F during the night. So for me making sure that I'm doing all I can to decrease the need for using furnace gas is part and parcel to what must be done in the winter. Today is better. The fires have been able to get the house to 65F without a problem, so the polar vortex must have passed. I slept downstairs nearer to the fireplace the last 2 nights. Tonight I can go back to my bedroom upstairs. And can continue on prepping the walls to be repainted in the living room.

Same issue here in rural saskatchewan, Hit -48 to -50C few nights already this winter. Those winds really hurt. Fairly new to the prairies but would never leave here. Those mornings when the sun shines and every little thing is coated in ice, the entire world sparkles, how can one be unhappy with that beauty. Makes up for having to keep the car block heater plugged in for months and the heating bill. Everybody just expects this and doesn't slow their life down. I realized the 1st winter that everyone is outside ice fishing, snowmobiles, hockey, winter camping, etc..etc. They also use wood heat exclusively more and more outside of the city( which is most of the province ) I'm learning a lot about keeping warm in the winter and how critical it is to have backup systems in place. But I have been known to swear when it gets unbearable shovelling the driveway and can only be out 5-10 mins at a time. CHEERS for the power workers out there keeping on top of the lines and cell towers!!

It is funny that you mentioned it: I have just been cleaning my kitchen appliances! I use baby oil to polish the stainless steel appliances - and it works beautifully and lasts quite a long time. LOL. In February the regularly scheduled events for us are: the dogs' annual exams and shots/bloodwork, fertilize the yard at the end of the month, vision exam. This year, I am having an electrician replace some very old switches, etc., hard wired smoke detectors, and grounded plugs in the month with higher quality industrial switches. Hopefully, I won't have to have those done again in my lifetime (so I hope). February is a very busy month all over the world, I am finding. It makes me feel like a part of a larger effort. Have a very lovely February.

I put things like schedule dog's shots a year out on my phone's calendar. Usually 3 mos ahead of time so that I can get an appointment with the vet that I want. My town doesn't have a senior center. Last year we had lots of rain. As many in my city discovered excessive humitidy + dust is a recipe for mould. We soon discovered the places that dont get cleaned often where there was dust build up. Everyone was throwing things out. Clothes shoes pillows sofas books bags. My sister in law had to move out of her house and sell it because of mould. I need to clean the blinds and clean under and behind furniture. The humidity is high again now and i dont want a repeat of last year.

We do a lot of sorting and cleaning at this time of year. We have really old leather sofas that are from 1984!LOL they still look like new because we clean and condition them twice a year. This is the time of year we go and drop off the items in our donation box as well as taking things like e-waste to the recycling centre. It's much less busy in the Winter. We do a lot of maintenance on our bikes at this time of year too and we have a lot of bikes. Winter bikes with fat tires, mountain bikes and road/gravel bikes. Our area has local events that are free like outdoor ice skating and snowshoeing at some of the conservation areas - these are guided and will include some history of the area and information about the trees and critters in the forest. We like to pre-plan what we will be doing to our garden at this time of year too - we can't do anything until Spring because it;s so cold here in Ontario Canada but we can talk about it and plan it out check all our tools and see that everything is in working order and sharpened etc....

So that will be arranged in februari, I will combine it with a visit to a family members new house half way between here and there. Saves me a lot of driving and time. As to maintainence I don't use any fabric softners so that saves on products and cleaning the washing machine and pipes. Using a hot long (60°)washing program ones a week keeps it odor and bacteria free. I wipe fatty plates and pots with cheap toiletpaper so the fat doesn't builds in my dishwasher.

Such a lovely afternoon which cost nothing except for a bit of petrol to get there! Home for a warming hot chocolate afterwards! Simple pleasures are the best!

Hi Aussie here, its our Wet season in nthn tropics. For maintenance we got an external window blind replaced and had our air cons cleaned before Xmas and using them a lot now. We are doing more external drainage to cope better with heavy rains, plus preparing auto sprinklers for the dry season. We need to repaint our kitchen at some point this year. OK, I need to clean my oven and washing machine too!

Hubby always keeps himself busy with woodworking projects, helping kids and being my personal driver as I seldom drive anymore. Garden season coming up, I need to plan what I want to can this year and get seedlings started and make sure I have lids, jars etc. Always stuff to sort and downsize. Watch the grandkids now and again is so fun! I don't get out much due to some issues that make it hard. Keep ourselves busy though.

Watching this after a weekend spent taking apart my dehumidifier and cleaning out any mould and dust, and taking the hoover to bits to remove clumped hair. We've also had various light shades down dusting them and cleaning them up. Feb for me is a month to start getting ahead thinking about the growing season and what I need to start planting at my allotment. Once March hits, its going to be all go so I need to be very organised as Feb is already disappearing rapidly.

If you're quilting and have specific colors you want have you considered using color discharge &/or dye techniques with Procion Fiber Reactive Dyes. They're quite reasonably priced and allow greater flexibility in fabric choice. Color stripping or over-dying with a darker/more intense color or one that blends to createa better color, pattern, or hid damage, can make an unattractive fabric into a lovely one.

We need to have the oil changed in the car and we need new wipers. That's the main thing this month. We're going to get the veggie seeds we'll need to start next month indoors. I'll depend on a friend for the egg cartons I normally use for that. Here in the US eggs have become very eggspensive, as you may have heard. But she has continued buying them as she normally would because she thinks I'm odd because of my frugal ways. Let's just say that we have a different philosophy on life as far as that goes. But we get along very well otherwise. We live a no spend life, lol, so February won't be much different in that way.

Because of the expense of items around the house that need maintenance check up , our dogs' vet appointments, health check ups, and etc., I schedule these throughout the year. I write the regularly scheduled appointments on my yearly calendar so I will remember to not only save up for the expenses but the time of the year when the items need attention.

We are surrounded by amazing countryside, hills, field and farmland, although it can get a bit muddy this time of year! We're also about an hour away from a number of beaches and one of our favourites is a pebble beach, lovely to walk along and listen to our shoes crunching and the sea hitting the stones, plus there's usually some wildlife to spot. Haven't been for a while, so need to think about doing that some time soon - which reminds me, need to look out the rather old flasks as might need to think about buying more, love some hot soup after a beach walk. As for maintenance, have just cleaned out the washing machine, filters, etc and also the tumble dryer, latter only used very occasionally when cold and too damp to get things dry. Oven also blitzed at the weekend. I've recently done a huge cupboard clear out and found quite a lot of bedding and duvets, pillows, etc, so will be deciding whether these need to be kept/sold/given to charity.

@@FrugalQueeninFrance Thank you. We are far from being financially comfortable but are careful - your channel is an inspiration and so very helpful - and make the best of what we're lucky to have. I cleaned my washing machine in January, my husband cleans our vacuum cleaner and replaces filters and such, I do not know how to clean my dishwasher??, next on list is the oven, I clean the stove and inserts often. Our City has a free concert in the park every other weekend, we walk another park with a lake to take pictures of wildlife, we are Geocachers, free with your smart phone, taking a trip to my son's in February and trip planning before it gets hot. I started my sinking fund in January, thank you for the teaching. Best Wishes.

We just had a wonderful walk at a local wildlife refugee, 37 degrees F but we saw a lot of eagles. We're starting the garden planning, although it's too cold to plant yet (Oregon). Also made a reservation for a few nights in April at our timeshare at the beach. We will take most of our food along, so it will be an inexpensive trip.

Here January and February can be bitterly cold, keeping us indoors (this weekend it was unusually cold at -26 C) so I this is my crafting season, too (quilting and other craft sewing). I also go through my books and magazine (a non-frugal indulgence I am working on decreasing) and either donate to local library sale or recycle. I also tend to do my big financial over view this month that I think many people do in December of January butit just works for me to do in February. Wishing you success in accomplishing your goals and some lovely frugal outings to take the edge off of the dark winter months.

We save half our income. A % is sinking funds for bills that will or might arise in the year. We save 10% of our income into long term savings. Having savings meant we saved cash for an 18K car or we could save 12K to get our barn rebuilt. Everyone should save and pay cash.
