I think the arrow loop was the best out of the bunch. I picked up the 705 specifically to help hunt RFI, in home and powerline. Great idea.

Thanks for your ideas, very useful. Some more things you might want to research and find for the IC-705.... 1) A tiny portable CW key and / or keyer paddle that might be incorporated into a base support or otherwise attaches to the 705... 2) A separate BP272 battery charger that is much smaller than the Icom BP202 unit... 3) Solar panel charger for the BP272 battery... 4) Form-fitting hard or soft case to surround / protect the '705 when tossed into a random backpack... 5) Well-designed sun/rain shield for the '705 so the display is readable in sunlight... 6) The most-requested feature: Antenna tuners!

Those are all great ideas! I have most of that gear I would consider good for all portable radios. I can do a follow-on video to support all radios. 👍

Great video, very timely. I have the WINDCAMP mount, very useful. I have the COMET 350 antenna, still cannot get it to tune properly. You look very professional all dressed up in a collared shirt and nice sweater. Congrats.

Josh I have made a simple mod on the Windcamp bracket. I have milled out a square 1/2 mm deep so the bracket is prevented from rotating by locating over the square protrusion from the 705

Josh, you always do a great job. One quick comment. The Signal Stick, or any HT Antenna directly attached to the 705 will not work very well because the radio doesn’t have the required shielding and the swr is through the roof. You either have to get the antenna off the radio or make a Counterpoise which will get the swr to around 2-1 or 1.5-1 but it varies by antenna.

I have the IC 705, have the backpack, also have the Heil headset. Cup holder for in the motor home. Love the 705, got it because I have the 7300 as well. Looking at getting the VS3 Bluetooth microphone at some point. Thanks for the video!

Nice and informative and dig the Christmas vibe. What a world where you have to cover ‘how I acquired what’ for the naysayers. Can’t wait to see the 705 antenna video.

I have the Bioenno 12Ah Battery for power and the Manfrotto Tri Pod and in my opinion they are must haves for the 705. The tripod for sure, only 17 bucks on Amazon. Thanks Josh !

Josh, excellent video as usual. Can you recommend some sort of front face protection accessory for the radio itself? I am looking into SOTA applications here in Argentina and the original Icom backpack is not practical for a long trek so I was thinking on using my regular big backpack to hold not only the radio equipment but everything else.

So you're a ham guy, I have a question. Cleaning out the old barn, and found a couple radios. They look like CB radios but only have 8 channels, on the bottom it has a label that says agricultural use only. What frequency are they on? Can they be used on CB frequency or GMRS frequency?

Thanks, Josh! Great video, as always. Now, while I'm not exactly stuck in the "Spark Gap" era, I do enjoy using more "vintage" radios, especially weak signal, in the 2m 6m range mostly. My rigs can cover almost every frequency from DC to LIGHT, but for some reason those are the ones I find myself on most often. SSB QRP mostly, but on occasion FM. Used to play with digital, but that seems to have fallen out of my attention span these days. Would you consider covering or reviewing a few vintage rigs in the future? Especially those in the 2 and 6 meter range. Thanks, and best wishes! 73 de Karl VE3GUN

So I bought my IC 7000 in 2007. And I love that radio. It has been an amazing radio for me. However with the IC 705 coming out I am hoping for "IC-708" What the heck is that? Well there was a IC 703 and then a 100 watt version the IC 706. So I am hoping they will make a 100 watt version of the 705. And I will buy it. What do you think....you think there is a 100 watt version coming?
@Andy-M9382 жыл бұрын
It is already there, called Icom 7300. If you put 100W to the 705, you need some areas to build and fans and heat sink..maybe you also want a tuner inside...and for all that stuff included more weight and size what you have already with the 7300. Ok, not VHF / UHF if really needed on portable opearation. Just my 50Cent.

I got a IC-705. Love the radio, but running into some problems with some BNC HT antennas. First antenna I bought was a Comet BNC 24 connected to a 90° BNC adapter I bought from Amazon. The SWR is sky high and even tried grounding the radio with the same result. Figured it was a bad connector and bought some more from HRO. Once those connectors came in, I gave those a shot and the SWR is still high. Thought I got a bad antenna. Ordered a Diamond RH77CA BNC antenna and got it on a 90° connector. Once again, the SWR is still sky high and changed the connector. And again, the SWR is still high. What I mean by sky high, the SWR is maxing out the SWR meter on the radio. So far, I cannot use an HT antenna mounted to the radio without getting SWR through the roof. I can hook it up to my Diamond V2000a home base antenna with 75ft of LMR 400UF and a 90° BNC to PL 259 adapter. That's the only antenna I can use to work 2m SSB/FM and D-STAR repeaters with. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. 73, W4ISB.

I ran into the same problem with HT antennas. The best one I found for 440 to use with my hotspot is the Diamond SRH320A with SMA to BNC adapter and BNC 90 degree adapter. On 440 it is round 1.3. However, on 2 meters it is still almost full scale on the SWR meter.

I put a counter poise on the ground and got the swr down to 1.25.
