Avalon Hill Co. of Hunt Valley produced a game called "1830". It is a remarkable game. Like chess, the only element of chance is who goes first. I recommend it to anyone who wishes to understand how the whole railroad building thing worked in the mid 19th century. B&O and Pennsy are early antagonists, but NYCentral changes everything. I know this series is 4years old, but I just discovered it. I'm really enjoying. Thanks from Laurel. MD

During the 1980s restoration the stained glass domes were restored other original beauty. During WWII they had been painted over and hidden to avoid being seen by enemy aircraft that might bomb the station. I'm so glad that this restoration was done and included their preservation and restoration

It was referred to as "Union Station" because originally it served the Baltimore and Susquehanna to Harrisburg, (later the Northern Central, which became part of the Pennsylvania) The Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore and the Baltimore and Potomac to Washington (also eventually PRR and now the Northeast Corridor of Amtrak) as well as the Western Maryland, whose downtown terminal at Hillen Street was connected to Owings Mills by way of the B&P Tunnel to Fulton Jct. The biggest improvement made during the 1980s was the restoration of the stained glass skylights, which were painted out for the WW2 black out, and remained dark for almost 40 years. Restoring natural light in the interior made an enormous difference.

Back in the 1940s the stained glass skylight was painted over with a drab green paint due to air raid concerns. I used to go to the station in the 1960s with my two older sisters and their husbands-to be on Sunday nights. One time when the one future husband had to go back to Drexel in Philadelphia and the other time when the other future husband had to return to New London, CT after being on Naval leave. On both occasions they caught the 11:01 Federal Express which had a mixture of PRR and New Haven coaches, and pulled by a GG1 electric locomotive. The drab green paint was still up on the ceiling skylight back then and I had no idea what was hidden underneath it. So glad it was removed when the station was renovated and that beautiful stained glass skylight was visible again.

I used to go to the Whistle Stop bar inside, even when I wasn’t taking the train.

Interesting history. My father used to live on St. Paul St. within walking distance of Penn Station. I remember train trips in the 1970s, but haven't seen the restoration from the 1980s.

Nice piece, energetically done. Could you have the audio fellow edit out all the "UHs" ? They are very distracting.
