Leave it to Mazzy to point us in the right direction for new music. Solid picks, and thanks for introducing me to Lady Blackbird. I love Gillian and Dave, and always look forward to their new releases. The Smile and The Cure, both solid albums. I need to check out Louie's album, thanks for sharing.

Hi Mazzy nice to see you and there is great new music. It keeps us old farts young..keep on spinning..thanks for the music and the recommendations as always. I had an old friend pass away recently. We had lost contact but he was an electronic artist primarily who had some success with Michael Hutchence. Supported Big Black and Sonic Youth in one of his bands ‘No’ and played in Melbourne bands in 70’s and 80’s that had some names in there. Shout out to him, thanks for the music Ollie Olsen and a shout out to one of his collaborators and great drummer John Murphy. Not big names but important people in the development and influence of music for me in my formative years and many around the world. Kemet…great drummer..Tom Skinner..have seen The Cure a couple of times..wa introduced to them at 15. Great pop songwriter..Robert Smith. Love his work and opening track is a very reflective song..cheers Kevin

Nice recommendations. The Smile and The Cure are fantastic. But you forgot maybe best 2024 release so far. The The Ensoulment. A masterpiece, on par with Mind bomb and Dusk. Thank you for your wonderful YT channel 👍

Got Lady Blackbird's first album straight after its release and I love it. I am still not so certain about her recent one. It's still on rotation via streaming. Love Welch/Rawlings. Got most of Gillian Welch albums on CD. The Smile is also great. I would love to buy more from Bandcamp, but transport cost for vinyls are pretty high (The Sharon Is Karen LP cost around 22,50 euros, p&p to my place 36 euros). So I bought downloads by Eilen Jewel, Shawn Colvin, Richard Thompson, Nick Lowe, Grant-Lee Phillips, Niteworks and the two Song From Quarantine albums among others.

Hi Mazzy, your video showed that good new music is still a happening thing. Totally agree with your take on the new Cure album. It might one day be considered one of their best. Robert Smith has previously declared himself a fan of 90s UK 'shoegazer' music and the new album definitely has a layered, atmospheric rock feel about it. It sounds in parts like Slowdive whose revival has generated a renewed interest in this kind of stuff. Either way, the sounds work well and the songs are good on 'Songs of a Lost World'. Apparently there are enough songs for a few more albums. This is a totally good start.

Good choices. I would recommend VMPs new release "Explorations in Sound" a Marantz engineers reference audiophile album full of unknowns (Classical, Rock, Jazz). Amazing music and sound quality. They are competing with Acoustic Sounds on high end niche recordings. Things to come.

Yes! There is so much good new music. I watch a certain known person who, seemingly, only makes videos now about how bad the music industry is. Strong “get off my lawn” vibes. But I’m constantly finding brand new brilliant music.

I can separate the music from the business a bit. But you got to have some sort of business to put out most of the music. ✌🏼

As you tend to say, "I'm all in" on those all analog Acony pressings from Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, but I'm still waiting for my local shop to let me know my Woodland pre-order has arrived. I have to say I think Cutouts is my favorite of the three The Smile records. I'm sure I will picking up The Cure sometime this month. I'll check out those other two releases. Cheers! ✌

There is a load of garbage out there today but you are right about the amount of good stuff out there too, it's only gotten better and more interesting if you know where to look. It is a bit of work but totally worth it to keep exploring. Also glad to hear The Cure keeping it dark, saw some of their recent live sets online and they sounded great, they also get better with time. Cheers!

I've been buying records since about '68 and IMO it's really not all that different now than it's been through pretty much all the years since: Most mainstream music is a disposable confection at best - mass produced to be here today and gone later today. There's always great music being released, though, even if you usually have to stray off the beaten path to find it. It's almost always been that way. If some variation on rock is your go to music, then there will never be the same excitement that there was when the art form was new. You can't recapture that time in your life any more than you can your first car, your first love, your first high. That's just the way things crumble. Rock is pretty much a kind of 'folk music' now - as much a part of the cultural landscape as fast food and suburbia, but hardly radical in any sense of the word.

So, if the new music is so great, why such an extremely limited release for “Sharon Is Karen?” Where’s the confidence in the product? “Woodland Studios” sounds good. (Now On My List) What's the backstory of Lady Blackbird? (Now On My List) Where does the name Lady Blackbird come from? Think You meant “Lay Down, Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)” by Melanie. Is Smile still considered newly discovered music coming from X-Radiohead members? Same thing with The Cure. (Not Sold) When I think of the dearth of new music, I’m thinking of the absence of fresh sounds from new talent.

Sharon is Karen I a self produced and financed release. Vinyl is expensive to press and it’s not a touring band. Streaming is also available.

The Cure. That was a weird period after punk and edgy new wave died out from 1980 on. It was an odd period in my life too when I started college/Reagan became president/pastels and big hair became popular. I always associate the music with the time.

I'm 56. I can attest that there has NEVER been a better time for great new music...if you are willing to LOOK for it. Get out of your boring comfort zone and let your streaming service paly whatever comes after what you are listening to. That is about the easiest way to find new stuff. ps I HATE streaming services in every other way.
