When we travel around the state, we are always on the lookout for drive-ins. The Legion burger stand has been on my bucket list for a long time. I should have grabbed a 6-pack of Tyranena to wash them down with.

Love the ambitious trekking ! And that noise on 40 out in the middle of nowhere was interesting. Maybe you were sitting atop a uranium rock !

The noise had me puzzled, like a bad transformer, but I couldn't see any power lines close by. Sometimes that just happens, though.

Love the videos, keep them coming. Have you ever thought about a video on how to navigate issues when activating? Like someone talking over your frequency, or right next to your frequency. Kind of like frequency etiquette and how to handle. I'm a fairly new Ham and haven't seen any info on this topic. And I have not had a chance to activate or work with an Elmer. All solo so far.
@RJ-cf8jq3 ай бұрын
In my experience it is best to change frequency yourself Instead of confronting another station. I have been a ham for over thirty years. Not had a chance to do POTA yet due to physical issues but have been on the air a lot. If someone comes on a nearby frequency and it causes me problems I will just move my qso up or down 5 khz. Has pretty much always worked for me. 73 N5TDA.
@KB9VBRAntennas3 ай бұрын
That's a great idea and I could probably put together a pretty good video with real examples of interference, adjacent stations, and net activations. I'll see if I can sort through the 100s of hours of recorded activations to give you a good idea of what I do.

Curious if you ever figured out the noise source on your first activation? Farm electric fence near by or using an inverter for laptop?
@KB9VBRAntennasАй бұрын
I haven't been back to that location, so I don't know if the noise was intermittent or continuos. I doubt it's electric fence, though. that makes more of a clicking sound.

Hey Michael, What antenna were you using while sitting in your car? The Mrs. spends less than you do (Ham Conventions) at her yarn shows. 😂😂😂😂
@KB9VBRAntennas3 ай бұрын
At my last stop, I was using the 1/4 wave vertical with the magic carpet. The only time I didn't during that rove was when I deployed the end fed half wave. Chris spent a pretty penny at the show. Those big bundles of wool yarn aren't cheap.

You can pick up US stations on 40m during our daylight hours? I can't pick up Wisconsin from Texas on 40m during the day.
@KB9VBRAntennas3 ай бұрын
I'll have to see if I can find a spot between 7.175 and 7.2 Mhz when I do a 40 meter late shift activation. The only problem is that segment get crowded with nets and ragchewers at night. Below 7.175 is the US extra portion of the band, and I try to stay out of that segment to give general license holders the ability to contact me.

You are come back to magic carpet?! Why?
@KB9VBRAntennas3 ай бұрын
Since I was visiting multiple parks during the day, I wanted an antenna with a fast setup and teardown. That's why I chose the magic carpet for the ground network.
@iu1olr3 ай бұрын
@@KB9VBRAntennas I understand! I got good results with the magic carpet following your instructions, but I don't know if it's due to propagation or luck. I'm getting better results with the raised radials, which I often can't mount completely raised but inclined with excellent results! Your videos are always very interesting!
@KB9VBRAntennas3 ай бұрын
I think you will always receive better results with the raised radials, because even with the magic carpet you will have ground losses. It can take as many as 32 ground radials to get the same effect as two elevated radials will give you.
