I need to make something on mine, a convertible 125i (same N52 engine as 130i, stupid name). I love this car so much apart from the dead steering feel. And I mean DEAD. The 135i has better hydraulic steering but I hate turbos and the N54 isn't known for it's reliability. My first car was a top spec 2007 118i 3 door that looked just like Jay's car here, in black with lemon interior. It only took me 3 months to total it in an epic 50mph, 50m long drift on Snake Pass in the peak district. Since then I've had several Alfa Romeos but now I have my straight six convertible 1 series I couldn't be happier. Much love Jay/James.

Great video. Really love these normal car reviews. I think my M140i will be regarded in the same way, in another 10 years. 5 things I love : B58 engine, it's amazing. ZF8 auto box, it's amazing. Last of the RWD BMW hatches. Last of the decent sounding straight 6 (mines 2017 pre-opf). Still fairly 'sleek' and relatively small, and practical. 5 things I dislike : No LSD. Rattle-y tailgate. Squeaky door rubbers. Slightly wobbly rear end under quick direction changes. Some cheap plastics inside. Yes they are quite common now, although I do see a lot more S3's and GolfR's on the roads, so maybe once the modders have ruined half of the M140i stock, by slamming them down on their suspension, and ragging the arse out of them, stock ones will eventually because rare.

N47 in later E8x can give 280hp with stage 2, maybe even a bit more. Thats not too bad. B47, dont know really, but maybe 300hp is possible. N47 problems are not too bad if you get the recall done. Oh, and peak torque numbers are meningless, horsepower at current revs is what you need.

Best points about them really are they attract no attention at all. Economical, for what they are, way cheaper to keep compared to an M car and with mods it's not only closer than you think, you can have much more fun at sane speeds. The engine is great, last of the breed especially with the manual box. Prefer the pre-facelift as I personally dislike the I-drive. Overall a rare car that on standard suspension and runflats was a bit of a mess, swap those and look at the stats. @BigUriel3 жыл бұрын
A common mod is changing the gearbox mounts for the ones off the e46 M3, along with a better aftermarket oil. Even after that it's still a bit on the stiff side but it does improve it. These gearboxes generally don't like being babied, they work better when you shift fast and at higher revs. When I get a bad shift it almost always happens around town when I'm driving too relaxed and shifting too slowly, letting the engine drop to idle between the gears.

One thing I disliked about my 330i N52 was the long gearing, I wonder if James will agree 🤔

@@ginj4ninj4180 ooo I'm not sure actually, I had assumed they'd be the same or at least very similar. Now I want to find out...
@seveer73 жыл бұрын
@@ginj4ninj4180 you're right the 130i manual diff is a 3.23 and the 330i manual is a 3.15. Gear ratios are the same. I would imagine the gears are still quite long on the 1 series

I own a 118d 2009 msport. And the only issue that consistently gets into my head is the damn timing chain..it always concerns me whenever I drive it. And I have no paperwork of if it was done previously! 101K miles and passed every MOT and done less than 10K most years. How can I be confident in it? My only gripe on owning the BM! I do love the rims on that BM!

You could buy some peace of mind and get it replaced, but considering what these cost these days you'd be better off just forgetting about it, if it breaks just buy another. I think the issue with the chains has been greatly exaggerated on internet forums and whatnot. Yes there were a lot of N47s written off, but people forget just how many of these engines BMW made. Some 80% of all BMWs you see on the road registered between 2007 and 2015 have an N47, they made millions of these engines, of course if even just 1% of them snap that's going to be a lot but the risk is still fairly low.
