This is my first year growing sunflowers and I'm addicted!!! I planted them on a whim after finding a few volunteer garden plants in my yard. I direct sowed black hopi dye, short stuff, and red sun (unfortunately NONE of the red sun variety germinated). Once they sprouted, I tended to them diligently. As they grew I did a ton of research and they are good for so many things! The entire plant is edible. The stalks can be dried and used as garden supports, stakes, and trellises. The inside of the stalks can also be used as a flour substitute. All the flowers on each head can be rubbed off and dried for tea - I have 3 batches drying as I type this. I planted them June 8th. It's August 27th here in central NC zone 8a and I'm STILL getting sunflowers on the stalks! I'm planting more in a couple days just to see how long they will grow in this climate. Sunflowers are my daughter's favorite flower, so I'm crossing my fingers I'll have some blooming when she comes to visit November 2nd! Enjoyed your video!

Yes!! Sunflowers will rejuvenate worn out soil! It is a great cover crop! I grow them all over my farm, amending the soil with my horse manure compost. They not only attract bees, but also attract aphids, which keeps aphids off of other veggies where you don't want them!

Great video! I love growing sunflowers and buy black oil seeds by the bag full on the cheap meant for bird seed. They also are delicious and lucrative to sell as baby micro-greens at farmer’s markets or on your dinner table. So many wonderful uses for these versatile plants, from food and fats to cut flowers and pollinator attractors. They are a fantastic addition to any garden but make sure to verify compatibility as some veggies don’t make good companions. Nice job, thank you for posting!

Trying sunflower stem flour this year. I'm using a tupperware lettuce cutter to extract the white foam from inside the stem, drying, grinding, ready for baking. Also, the flower head holds more than the stem. Just another resource, to better utilise your food growing.
@PalmettoPrepared Жыл бұрын
Sounds like that would that just be cellulose. Like eating straight up sawdust. Probably not the best for your gut but not overly harmful. You'd be better off feeding the stalks to a ruminate animal or even a pig as they can actually get the nutrients out of that

First time grower of Mammoth variety sunflowers. You aren't kidding about the pollinators they bring into the garden. I have loved seeing that! I heard that you can burn the stalks at the end of the season and you get potash for the garden. Have you heard that before? Semper Fi !
@PalmettoPrepared Жыл бұрын
They do collect a ton of minerals as they grow because of the deep taproot so if you burn or compost, you'll see those minerals in your soil. Burning almost anything plant wise will increase potassium and phosphorus to some extent but sunflowers will only mine so much. You're better off adding a few hardwood logs in the fire too. Semper Fi!

I like your video, but I live in the South and I am growing sunflowers for the first time. They do not deal with the heat well. I see my sunflowers wilt when it is hot! Humidity is high here and I have sun all day from morning to sunset. I bought mammoth seeds but not sure if they really are. I have two in a pot and one has 5 or more flower heads. Today the first flower opened. Will the head keep growing ? I hope that are mammoth but they are beautiful no matter what type they are.

I live in the south too. The trick with sunflowers is to put them in the ground or half barrel planters. Pots dry out way too fast and the sunflowers have a very long taproot that makes the flowers suffer if not planted in a way they can spread
