I sold mine a couple years ago with a few others for some more knife cash…and your mentions/videos are reminding me how much I miss it. I was still somewhat new to the knife game and kind of scoffed at back locks. Wanted the axis locks, button locks…all the “fancy” stuff. Now I’ve come full circle and respect the durability and function of said back locks. Spyderco has been my favorite company throughout, and the Native 5 is a choice edc. Perfect size, weight, dope design, killer blade.. I don’t just want one back, I want multiple. Thanks for the videos and the insight.

I have three, gave a lightweight to my son. Only knives I carry, the best has full liners and burple G10 with S110V, the second best is a linerless with micarta handles in Rex 45. The third had G10 linerless but the blade is more or less useless CruWear. The lock is the only one any folding knife should have. Strongest in testing and broke the blade not the lock. Would love a Maxamet and a Magna cut, but they are lightweights which are a no go for me.

5 reasons I think the title of the best Spyderco for EDC goes to the Manix 2 regular or lightweight. 1. The perfect size. The Native 5 is just a little to small. 2. The best lock. It is strong and very figitable plus it can be tuned to your liking with aftermarket parts 3. Very comfortable handle and choil. Same texture as the Native 5 for a great grip even when the hands are cold or wet. 4. Lots of steel choices. 5. Continuously curved leaf shaped blade that has a lowered tip. The Vosteed Nightshade does the same thing but is even more exaggerated.

I agree with all those points and I absolutely love the Manix as well. I’d probably give it second place though, just because if the size. The Native is just easier to carry. But it is a really tough decision, especially if you’re talking about the LW Manix… you got me thinking!

There is a lot of personal preference involved. Either one is a great choice! Hard to go wrong. I have always loved larger knives so that weighs heavily on my choice. I also really like the Manix 2 XL! I put custom scales on mine and it takes it to the next level with both grip and looks!@@doodysdaggers

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Spyderco is pound for pound the best knife company period. There are cooler knives, there are more fidgety knives, there are smoother and higher tolerance knives, but Spyderco just does everything extremely well. Hands down the best and most consistent with heat treat and blade geometry which makes them as a tool absolutely top notch. As you said that and a variety of steels not to mention a variety of models and sub models with the salt, lightweight, normal, and exclusive editions they come out with. The Native 5 does envelope everything that makes Spyderco great all while having a back lock. They aren’t fidget monsters but they are certainly work horses with awesome ergos and perfect blade shape. I agree with you 100 percent across the board.

Literally, my only beef with spyderco is their budget line. The Steele hasn’t changed in forever and the price is too high for what it is. Imo they could easily put g10 scales on their under 100 knives. Very few knife companies but spyderco sell frn scales on an 80 or 95 dollar knife idk 🤷‍♂️

The hole in the blade is more simple and practical than the thumb studs. I love the minimalist design of these natives they're true durable utility tools. The less screws spacers and studs are in the design the more rugged it will be. Many knives are just toys and jewelry that are made to look pretty more so than usefulness and will mostly be used for "fidgeting factor" and not real work.

The Native 5 Salt in LC200N is one of my favorite EDC knives along with the Dragonfly 2. Both knives see daily carry. Very versatile and inconspicuous. Nice vid! 👍

Would be curious to get your take on the manix 2 lw. I have to agree with what you said about spydercos new generation frn texture. I have it on my resilience lightweight, and compared to my g10 model, i dont really mind it + its noticably lighter- which is nice for a fairly large edc blade. I own a pm2 as well, and quite a few other soydercos- but im looking to pick up a used manix or pm2 (for a user) right now- kinda leaning towards the pm2 over the lightweight but theyre in the same price range. The manix appeals to me for the ambi lock (im left handed) but i feel like the cme would work well for me on the pm2.

Between the shaman and native 5, pm 2 and para 3, manix 2 and sage 5. Which would you say is the best bigger work knife, smaller edc knife combo. I like the Manix but just curious. Native 5 is the perfect pocket knife. I have the ultralight in 110V. Small, ergonomic, you don't even know it's with you. Agree the FRN feels solid. I have many fixed blades for hard work.

Why does the Sage 5 not get nearly the love that the Native 5 does? Compression lock on the Sage makes it much easier to deploy and close, and more fidget-friendly! In all other respects it’s basically a Native 5 knockoff!

Less common, a lot more expensive, ppl avoid the cf/g10 scales, also avoid a LW that weighs the same cuz it has liners and frn, the compression lock isn’t as good as most other versions as it is harder to press in and the light weight short blade isn’t as satisfying to fidget with, only comes in S30. My opinion is the Sage 5 is closest to a perfect design out of the box as they get. It was my EDC for a period of time. I actually prefer to fidget with the Native 5 LW, I find it better in shorts, better ergos, better looks. They are both top notch.

Why does it seem like Spyderco and Benchmade FRN scales are accepted in the knife community but many other FRN handle scales aren't? It must be the texture and molding geometry 🤔. I've found that G-10 material itself varies greatly between manufacturers but FRN not so much 🤷. For example the difference between Kubey and Civivi G-10 is huge imo 👍. However the difference between Spyderco and ColdSteel FRN isn't nearly as great 🤷. I honestly believe any differences in FRN is primarily due to the texture and molding geometry and not the mixture formula itself. And while the shape, texture and geometry play a role in G-10 also the epoxy formulas have a greater role in the tactile traits from one another unlike FRN 🤷. Wow that was hard for me to word for some reason 🤷 lol. In different words I detect favoritism toward Spyderco and Benchmade FRN, however it may be granted and warranted to the mold shape itself instead of the composition of material. Whoot whoot, I think that makes sense now lol 🤣!

I've had phases where I preferred other knives. In the grand scheme of my last 15 years of knife collecting though, I always come back to the delica for a small edc. I've got 3 of them, one in Super Blue steel, a wharncliffe k390, and a standard vg10. I go to the vg10 the most honestly. The superblue is a bit of a collector item at this point and isn't as tough down at the edge as vg10 in my uses. The wharncliffe is nice but I've found a regular drop point works just as well for utility and has the belly for other tasks. Wish I would have gotten the regular blade shape in k390 instead, maybe I'll see if anyone wants to trade at some point. Idk yet. The native is on my list and possibly the next knife I buy. It's got the classic leaf shape blade, spyderco does a wonderful job with the back lock, and I like their frn handles. I may go with the magnacut salt version to knock 2 birds with one stone. I wanna see for myself what all the talk is about over magnacut, and I want to get a native. If I end up liking the knife but not the steel then I can always get an s30v native. Then sell or store the native salt in my collection.

The Spyderco I have most used were budget ones, made abroad - the Resilience and the Persistence, and I used them daily. I later on bought a Chaparral because I wanted a very thin blade, and it delivered. The thing was that the Chaparral's handle was just too small for my hand. My point is this: you can buy a great knife but you also need to consider how it's going to work for you with day after day use.

I have to agree on the blade shape. I love this type of leaf blade shape - not aesthetically, but functionally I love it. Wharnies are too straight for general applications, especially if the blade to handle isn't angled slightly. Wharnies are too hyped in the knife community right now. Unless you are solely cutting boxes open, a slight belly is much more useful in a wide range of applications

Shaman is the GOAT work knife for me. The Native 5 LW offers all of the same hard working functionality in a LW EDC package. It is so good. I really like the lock back and find really figdety. I have the Magnacut version, it was packed with grease. I cleaned out the grease and polished the surface at the pivot point and I had my knife reverse flicking on day 2. Same theory as when I polish washers.

It's a mini, lock-back Shaman. They're great knives but I carry my SHaman over my Native5 most days.

Fun to operate. Some knives make clicky clacky metallic sounds that are nice. Satisfying to flick open and shut. It might be something only knife guys understand but I’m trying to explain it. Haha

Just got my first spiderco 2 weeks ago. The ambitious. Its the first time iv spent more then like 10 bucks on a pocket knife and since i already ordered another. The lil native in s30v. They really are nice knives. And i love the way they look with the g10 grips. now i want a native 5!

Man your making me wanna get another LW version. Had a PJ before in S35vn but sold it bc it was just too ho hum in that configuration. I do have a native 5 still in S110V and G10 with full liners. Its a little tank very well made but it hardly gets carried bc I generally like something a little bigger but its definitely a solid model that’s popular for good reason. I’ve always preferred the Sage series like the 2 and 5 for smaller Spyercos but they only come in a handful of configurations with most in s30v, not that there’s anything wrong with that steel. I do like how the native carries its very compact and no hump when closed like most leaf shapes blades they offer. My only real gripe with the LW was the clip position leaving a little too much handle poking out the pocket and the non standard screw mounting pattern making the owner buy a native specific aftermarket clip to address that. Now a few years later or so there are more options out in the LW new steels and handle colors, in fact i was eyeing that new MC salt you mentioned just this morning haha.

My first single blade folding knife with a lock was a Spyderco endura. Since then I have consistently bought spyderco knives. Every single one I have owned has been a joy to use. The native is the next spyderco on my list. I’ve only owned their Japanese backlocks. I’m interested to see what a us spyderco backlock is like.

the back lock pretty much kills it for me so ill stick with my sages...they are very close to each other though...and im ngl, the mini pallet to hold the post-its is dope haha

Haha thanks I’ve had that pallet sticky note thing for years. When it runs out I’ll have to get more sticky notes and use the same pallet
