Stop being offended! They’ve been there a year, obviously they’ve travelled, sometimes you have to rest and stay home. What they need are hobbies…the same as they’d need if they retired and stayed in the US. So…buy a guitar, a ukulele…whatever, and get going. I’m bored in Canada and Canada is HUGE and if you want to talk about lots to see…THERE IS LOTS TO SEE! Also…boredom was a kind of tongue in cheek point. These guys are FINE!

Your never to old to learn another language. I moved here from Australia five years ago and it's true that when I speak Portuguese they prefer to speak English especially in the South. I fortunately have a house in the Algarve and the north of Portugal, located in a small village where most of the locals don't speak English. I really enjoy my interaction with the locals who also seem to enjoy talking with me my atrocious Portuguese. They often tell me "você fala muito bem Portuguese" ( you speak really good Portuguese) . I love the interaction and the laughs. Keep making the videos I really enjoyed it. And good luck with your move. Your never too old for a new experience. Reagrds

Portugal need to check if you are a criminal, if you have money to live in Portugal (with out help of our social security and social services), if you have a house to live and if you have a health insurance. Because with so many retires from north of Europe (because they belong to European Union) they have access to our public healthcare for free. And right now our public healthcare are completely overloaded. Portugal and Greece are the most warmer countries in Europe with the energy crises this year, lots of retirees from Germany are coming to Portugal. I have a private insurance from my company (medicare) but when i need to go to hospital normally i use the public healthcare. But not this year, i read that there orange emergencies with waiting time more than one hour and yellow emergencies with waiting time of 5 hours.

Hi there, I'm a US/British dual national who lived in Portugal for several years (we came when Brits were still EU citizens so it was easier than now). So glad you are enjoying living there! We actually brought a shipping container of *stuff* and it wasn't all that bad. The most challenging part of that was re-registering our US-registered car in Portugal and if anyone reading this is thinking of doing this, I really recommend ACP, they helped us tremendously (we were in Lisbon). I also made a big effort to learn Portuguese and would encourage everyone to do so, it is really rewarding (and also necessary if you want to eventually apply for citizenship which I did). Among the many things I really valued about living in Portugal is how safe it is, especially compared to the US. I really appreciated this especially as a woman who likes to exercise outside year-round. About the family and friends issue, I would say try to have a guest room because then people are more like to come and visit (ie if they have a free place to stay).

Number 1 is also my main limitation. I was born in Lisbon-P in 1959, Moved with my parents to the Netherlands in 1970. After 20 years my parents went back to South of Lisbon, another great location. They past away in the meanwhile. I would love to retire in Portugal but my wife, who is Dutch, doesn't want to leave the children and grandchildren behind. The children do love Portugal but are all adults now. I experienced how hard it was for my parents, in particular my mother, to live far away from us for almost 20 years. It was particular hard for them when they got sick. On various occasions I was forced to go there and help them for a short while. So I understand my wife's reservation on moving to Portugal. We continue to visit Portugal on regular base. When my parents were alive, we would go almost every year. Now every 2 years. We where in the Algarve in September 2021. Just loved it. Nothing compares to our beaches. Not only in the Algarve. Enjoy my country, that will always be in our hearts.

Great that you are enjoying the Algarve. Have lived here for over 40 years now. Won't ever leave. Keep up with your Portuguese. They will probably reply in English but then you reply in Portuguese. That way everyone gets better. Begin replying in Spanish. They will fully understand. Languages quite similar and there is no no longer any animosity betwee the two countries. Eventually you will end up speaking Portinhol, a mixture of the two. Finally, the Algarve is nothing like the rest of Portugal. Make sure you visit the entire country and, of course, their larger neighbour. Two fantastic and totally different cultures.

I just returned to Atlanta from 3.5 weeks in Portugal and Italy. We started in Porto and traveled to Tomar, Obidos, Lisbon, Sintra and down to the Algarve before going to Rome, Florence, Cinque Terra and Venice. I LOVED the Algarve!! I almost cried when I had to leave Portugal. I felt more alive and healthy there than I have felt in years in the U.S. There is something to be said for sunshine and sangria. The red wine from the Alentejo region is amazing and super affordable. The Portuguese people are warm and friendly. I'm going to work on more year full time in the U.S. and then probably sell everything and move. I'm curious to know where you guys settled in the Algarve. We stayed in Albufeira as home base and saw Lagos and Portimao as well. I was disappointed not to have the time to see Loule and Silves. I did see that real estate in along the coast is much more expensive than Loule and Silves and it's tough to rent in the summer months there without paying a fortune. I'd love to hear your thoughts. You guys look happy!

We completely agree - we feel healthier and more alive here. One of the first winters I spent here I called my best friend in the States crying and said "I feel like the barnacles are breaking off my soul" lol. We really like the Alentejo wines and also the Douro Valley wines. We are about fifteen minutes west of Lagos. Absolutely love it. Not a fan of living in Portimao. Just too big for us. And yes, real estate on the coast is much more expensive. You can go fifteen or twenty minutes north of the Algarve and find MUCH lower prices. We are working on an episode about buying our home here. Stay tuned! We actually rent our place in July and August - lots of income while we travel around Europe or visit home. Good luck on your journey - your will absolutely love it here!!

My wife and I moved to Lisboa 19 months ago and love love love our urban lifestyle with no cars, free public transport since we’re above a certain age, and as you said, wonderful local restaurants/cafes with fresh food at great prices. Your 5 points to consider are spot on and we loved especially your last one about family and friends, with most of whom we chat more often than ever, but we do hit the occasional bump with some of those back in the US asking, “So, when is it you’re coming home?” Ah, we say, we are home . . . Sounds like you folks are, too. Also, we’ve made SO many friends here and our schedule is, just as you noted, tough to manage as we enjoy our continued explorations! Bem vindo e boa sorte!

I enjoyed your comments and as a resident for over a year in Portugal I agree with your points. I think it is important to consider the challenges of living in a different country and to try it out before making a lifetime commitment. Americans can stay in Europe for six months without a visa so it is not difficult to spend some time to evaluate a country and different places in the country. My wife and I chose Porto because we liked the walkability of the city and that we had so much to choose from in a smaller area. Thank you for taking the time to construct your first video with clear points, well done!

For so long, foreign people have been telling that Portugal is part of Spain. Assuming that we speak Spanish... We have our own identity, we apeak our own language, we have our own culture and history. Besides that, there's the historical factor. In the past we have had some conflicts with Spain. They invaded us several times and, once, even ruled us. So... Yes. We get a little offended when foreign people talks to us in spanish. In case of doubt, speak English.

there is another thing in Mediteran part of Europe that nobody says, but for me is one of nicest: in Spain, Portugal, Greece, Italy, it is easier to be old than in any other European country. Old people in these countries are social, active and respected by younger people in these countries more than in any other. A person doesn't become "invisible" and kind of discarded as he or she is old. It is not rare to see a group of 90 year old nicrly dressed friends coming out of the restaurant at 2am in a good mood, chatting and laughing, then asking a first person they see on the street if he can catch them a taxi and sure, person is glad to help. I saw similar situations all over these places. you see that they live till they die, and that is also expected from them, so getting assistance when you are old, sure. at least if you speak the language wink wink.

Portugal is a wonderful country. For me, that is especially in the north. The birthplace of the country in 1143, and therefore particulary rich in culture and the history of the nation. If you really want to integrate with Portuguese communities, and are interested in living a Portuguese way of life then of course you need to learn the language. In the Algarve, it's not so important as it is already geared up to the expat community. Portugal is a country of great contrasts, and much more than the Algarve, as such there are choices to suit pretty much everyone!

Excellent video. I’m sitting typing this on the terrace of my house in Lagos. I guess from the background that you are in what was Parque da Floresta ( now San Antonio?). I know it well and used to have a villa there. I’m disabled so can’t do the things I used to do here which is why I moved to accommodation with a ground floor bedroom and en suite. Too many steps in the PdF villas . I do get a little bored, but only spend about three months a year here. I still prefer living in rural Norfolk, especially in the summer. The Portuguese are lovely people, very friendly and cannot do enough to help me when they see me in my wheelchair. It’s a beautiful country with a wonderful climate. It’s interesting to see how many Americans have arrived here in the last few years. Twenty years ago when we first bought, you never saw an American. I’m glad that you have settled in so well. Best wishes to you both.

Yes, we are in PDQ (they still call the residential area Parque da Floresta). We absolutely love it. I have a lot of back pain, I don't know how long I will be able to make it down the stairs, but we found a villa with a fourth bedroom on the main level, and a driveway that drops you off right at the door. Someday, I won't need to manage a single step. I am so glad you are still able to come out to Portugal and enjoy this beautiful place on the planet. Thanks so much for watching us, Anthony! Glenda

I bought a place on the Silver Coast this summer and spent a couple weeks exploring the area. I grew up in Northern California in the wine country. Every cheap house wine I had in every small mom and pop restaurant in rural Portugal was BETTER than the very high-priced pretentious wines sold where I live in California. I’m talking house wines better than $50-75 a bottle wines. This blew my mind.

@@glendacole5797 I actually haven’t moved yet, but I chose the area specifically for the cooler weather. I grew up in the Bay Area, which used to have distinct seasons, but now it’s 8 months of summer and a few weeks each of spring, autumn, & winter. I can’t stand it and long for rain constantly. The endless wildfires and scorching heat horrify me. It was so different when I was a kid. I would have chosen the Sintra area if it was in my budget.
