The lead vocals on this track are outstanding. One of the UK’s best soul singers along with Mica Paris and Beverly Knight in my opinion.

LOL, was everyone's TV running sour that night when they were on TV? Their dad called me to tell me his kids Five Star were live on tv so I could see, he wanted to surprise me. My Tv was just like the video above. Good song guys. SHINE

You know. I feel exactly the same way. I watched them in my dorm room's lounge on BET. They were a bulwark on BET back then with the Alexander and Cherelle videos. I wonder if when they moved to L.A. in the late eighties/nineties if the industry there gave them the love and technical artistry/wizardry to help them along? Or whether there was some cultural jingoism - american inspired - going on that didn't allow for the best talents to have met up because I'm really liking them now +25 later.

god five star are brilliant they still all look very sexy still on this video. love this song but think the new jack mix thats on the single is much better .i bet if they had of release that mix it would of been a big hit.

@Picture111 Thanks for the clarification and you're right,... that was a highly energized dance! I guess that's how they kept their figures for so long. Anyone would be knackered after that workout!!! (LOL)!!!
@2008topshelf13 жыл бұрын
@Calvin375 just saying they were at the forefront of BET's programming gluing impressionable teens and students to their tubes back in the day. Every other video was Alexander and Cherelle's "Innocent" video, Five Star and sampling from Solar Records artists of the time. But Five Star held it down visually. I still think though - to you point about songwriters etc. - that there was a conspiracy to isolate a lot of talent back then that had potential to take shine away from the Jackson family

yes she was, still is and she does look great in this video, reminds of Karyn White. But in all fairness they all were attractive, i mean Stedman had higher cheekbones than his sisters!

@2008topshelf Ok, please forgive me, but I'm an American so what does "bulwark" mean? From what I understand, the Americam music industry didn't quite know how to market them. Which to me is very odd, because when they were all in their twenties they were trying to break in the R & B genre of music, which would've been easy for them at the time because the U.S. had several groups they were marketing. They just didn't take the time to help them find the right songwriters/arrangers/producers.

Calvin375 bulwark means a defensive wall. Not sure what that has to do with Five Star?
@2008topshelf13 жыл бұрын
@2008topshelf Sharice ("When you Smile") was a Janet Jackson show stopper and the industry didn't give her much talent to work with so she didn't glow with the mega wattage she could have. While Five Star were no Jackson's musical proxy - Michael being a musical X factor that had/has no pop equal - I'd bet the sycophants of the Jacksons - they being anyone who wanted anything to do with the Jacksons - would steer clear of Five Star lest risk any opportunity to cozy up to the Jacksons themselves

Mariah Carey was on her 3rd Cd in '92...but that doesn't matter, becuz i was a big fan of 5-Star, 5 years before I ever heard of Mariah. Also, Mariah doesn't dance! I love 5-Star...but with almost no push in America, I was losing interest in them by the late 80's!!! Too bad KZbin wasn't around then!

I have a theory about five star from a black american who was 11 in 85 and 13 in 87. I reall liked them when i first saw them in 85. 3 or 4 of their songs were r&b and played on our stations. I think they went wrong by still doing mj-esque moves after 85. By then, black music had definitely changed. Hiphop was gaining momentum. I saw "if i say yes" on Nickelodeon. Ut was corny (sorry guys). So not black american and not BET which was in DC. They were british. They needed help in their interviews. In 85 when they were on soul train, they were giggly like 7yr olds. They needed american management to show them how to be american chill.their dancing wasnt up to black american par. By 87, jody watley and janet jackson were the black dance queens. Janet had more flavor than mj. He had gone pop. By 88, five star became a laughing stock-a joke in uk but we didnt know. They shouldve moved to east coast.nyc instead of LA. Hung out in uptown manhattan.then maybe their groove wouldve been more authentic. Maybe hang out with regularblack people from nyc.get a choreographer and stylist from brooklyn. Shine shouldnt been released as a single. They shouldve done nyc in spring and summer and atl in fall and winter. They shouldve hooked up with whoever vanessa williams management was. Her stylists and music producer and picker of her songs were on point. They shouldve hooked up with babyface and LA the same time pebbles did
