I'm in the USA, and people in restaurants here can be very loud as well. People used to have more manners and consideration for others than they do now. Also, I don't know the situation with cell phone use in public in other countries, but here people seem to forget that other people cannot just turnoff their ears. I got my car serviced yesterday and waited in the customer service lounge while the work was done. A woman a couple of seats away from me was on her cell phone obviously having a disagreement with someone. Instead of stepping outside or saying she would discus whatever at a later time, she carried on in a normal tone of voice. We all got an uninvited and unwelcome earful. Honestly, I think the older I get, the less good sense many people have anymore. Thanks for this video, Jane. Happy Sunday to you, Mike, and the pups.

In the U.S. people smile, nod, or say hello to complete strangers. They strike up conversations with random people they encounter during their day. I like the openness and friendliness of Americans, particularly in the South. I have found traveling in other countries this is not the norm. If you try to strike up a conversation with wait staff, cashiers, or the person waiting in line with you they give you the look of derision or confusion for trying to have a conversation with a stranger. Every country has pros and cons.

I live in the US (Colorado) and find that it really just depends on the mood of whoever you're dealing with whether they're friendly or not! I don't always feel friendly or in the mood to talk to strangers so don't think it's very accurate to say all Americans are like this😊

The Cornish town I live in has 2 supermarkets and i have never had a problem parking. Truro has a great park and ride. However, bloomin roadworks delay me all the time! The households who have 2 or 3 cars, which are not needed and garages full of rubbish rather than their cars are anither bugbear of mine! Paris, I gather, is very crowded ( a vlog i follow) as are cities all over the world ( New York springs to mind). As for loud - try when the visitors are down here for the summer! September is so much quieter on the roads and in supermarkets!

The volume of music is driven by the venue IMHO, not by the desire of customers. My darling husband is the drummer in a 4 piece band and they are getting lots of gigs because they're good and not loud. Staff and customers have literally told them that's one reason they appreciated their performances (along with their great choice of music - they're very tight and skilful). You can always go elsewhere but often it's not your choice if you're with a group. Cheers from Oz!

We live in the South West near Exeter and for work travel all over. Never had parking issues in supermarkets and we use them alot for cheaper fuel and bathrooms!. My husband can park our work van in the tiniest of spaces...practice I guess. My SiL lives near Annecy so we do the drive regularly. Love the toll roads as they are so clean quiet and service areas are not fast food. However where they live even with markets and Aldi their food /fuel bills are very high. We take British essentials for her and she brings us cheese from her local Fromager. Both her and her French partner think UK life is cheaper but he has family that can't travel and we all at the moment can.. Everyone has an option. We are frugal so we can visit family that are far and away.

Hi Jane and Mike. I live in a northern UK town where the traffic can be quite busy, depending on the time of day. Sundays are no exception either, which wasn't the case many years ago. I do always manage to park on local supermarkets but where I live can be a pain at times, especially when someone decides to double park on our narrow road. There are also potholes all over the place. Overall it's a sorry state of affairs here in the UK right now and it's sad to see. So yes Jane, I can imagine various things will stand out more now that you've been away for so long, including the loud people, who are everywhere as well. 🙄 It will have no doubt made you appreciate your new life even more. 🤗

I used to live in Chicago years ago. There is decent public transit but many people still have cars. There’s only street parking in the older neighborhoods. You would have to do what I refer to as the “bump and tap” to get out of spots (parallel to the curb) as the cars in front of you and behind you were pretty much on your bumpers. I now live in the Chicago suburbs for 15 years. Our shopping centers in my area have sufficient parking. It might take a few minutes to get out if you’re shopping during prime time on a weekend, but it’s not very bad. I have to admit I don’t go in the stores much anymore as I prefer not dealing with shopping in person. I generally do grocery pickup. Restaurants do get loud here. However, we have a very diverse population. Lots of Spanish speakers and Eastern Europeans. I like that I can easily get to more spread out areas easily where I am. I do have to agree with on those things you don’t miss about the UK as I often see them here.

I agree with everything you have said . I live in semi rural Wales and the traffic isn't too bad . Very few traffic jams. The roads are bad in some areas, being poorly maintained. The high (and increasing) food prices and lack of choice in supermarkets is pretty bad here too. Utility prices are rising again in October. Housing costs also rising especially renting and council tax . It is very much doom and gloom with the economy . Wages are not keeping up with the rises and there is less and less disposable income. I will have to keep working as long as I can as I cannot afford to retire . Disposable income is very tight now while I am working , even on strict budgeting . I am not sure I will have enough money to live on in retirement . Very worrying. Thank you I always appreciate your frugal advice and opinions.

I know Plymouth well, grew up there through the 60s and early 70s so plenty of rels down there. I think it is a big city - a population of over 250K now and growing; where I live, also a city, the population is half that. Lyon I believe is only about twice the size of Plymouth. I don’t think you can say you hate traffic, when you’re contributing to it wherever you live. And the cost of the ‘expensive’ cars in a traffic jam is pretty irrelevant as all the cars in a jam are going slowly - the great equaliser for all. Sainsbury’s does have electric car charging points and rather like their petrol stations, they make a profit and both things encourage customers to enter the store. If we use a charging point, it usually allows us to have a quick shop as we head home. Most don’t want to charge for hours and if they take up a car charging space, then not charging would still mean they need a space. I guess all drivers would like more investment in road infrastructure here but it takes an inordinate amount of time to get going. I know in northern France, in past years, we’ve always been impressed at how quickly the French just get on with it. Traffic problems in France may not be such an issue - area-wise it’s a lot bigger than the UK but the population is about the same.

Jane, this did my heart and head and emotions much good and bad. Good because I’ve turned into a true neurotic for about two plus years now because of the very things you outlined word for word and more. Traffic, rude selfish people in traffic, pedestrians walking out into traffic without looking whether on the streets or in parking lots, loud people and cars. All the time without let up. I moved a year ago to supposedly a less crowded with-it county….‘less with-it, yes, but definitely not less crowded again in the ways you’ve described. I absolutely, no exaggeration, hate going even out of my house. Walkers and drivers put me over the edge immediately, not even two minutes of break. People, car, traffic, sound, and fast movement, overload. It’s messed me up big time. I never thought I would get to this point emotionally and mentally. So may I say thank you for being willing to share this specifically. 🙌😊

I totally agree on all things traffic and noise! If you aren't in a traffic jam, then you are being cut up by aggressive drivers! It often takes me at least 45 minutes to drive 10 miles home from work, which is ridiculous (can't wait to retire). The noise levels in public places feel like an assault to me, and make me just want to go home. On the choice, sometimes what we have in the UK is actually overwhelming to me ( just how many different breakfast cereals do we need?). I know people from less developed countries find it totally bewildering to have so many variations of the same thing. I guess this is a cultural perspective, so there will be a range of opinions on this. Maybe this is just my dislike of the mundane process of shopping.

Totally agree with your point of view Jane on all counts. Many years ago we had an away day to France to come and do some shopping, taking my father in law with us. The choice of food and the price then was so different and so much choice to what we were presented with. The lack of choice these days is a lot of it is down to supplies, farms not being able to get pickers, people who were in smallholding market are not able to afford what they grew before. This is worse than what it was pre-Covid. When you and I were younger we were also taught to be respectful and not bring attention to ourselves. Not today many youngsters (not all, but some), go down the street at all times of day having a blazing row on their mobiles shouting and screaming. Some things need to remain behind closed doors. When we moved to the house we rent 36 years ago, we had free on street parking. We now have to pay for residents permits to park. I can understand you not missing these kind of issues. We go down to Cornwall where we can, (out in the countryside where it is quiet) but it is in many respects far better than where we are in East Anglia (Peterborough). Out of curiosity, are there things that you do miss from the UK? Nice post. Tricia

I too don't miss the traffic that we moved away from 7 years ago. We truly appreciate the life we live now. We are out in the woods on a 30 acre parcel and it is 30 minutes to town, and an hour to a major city to get a variety of things. I do completely agree that the people in the city are louder, and I believe it is to combat with the constant noise from their surroundings. My husband wears hearing aids and it's really hard on him in these noisy situations. At times I have to speak a bit louder for him to hear, but in the city, I nearly had to yell. No we don't miss it. We prepare for the day out, when we need to run errands, and we know that we will be exhausted from it,after we return.

I enjoyed seeing the supermarket, I didn't realise that one. Yes everyone just seems too cross when they are out and about and it's disheartening having to leave the house sometimes. Luckily those people that are rays of sunshine are always scattered amongst the others. Some houses near me have 6 cars to a house... its just too much isn't it. Parking sounds like the here in the US. High density housing with zero parking on street. At least where I live in Oregon. Madness. Your traffic sounds like cities in the US. Portland, Oregon traffic has gotten as bad as Los Angeles over the past 7 years with influx of people moving to Portland. I lived in London on 1983-1984, and i thought British folks spoke so quietly that id have to ask them to speak up compared to how loud people say we Americans speak. Im sure its different now, but back then i found Brits spoke softly. The world has definitely changed.

At the moment you can hardly get on or out of my fairly big town because each road in and out on every side has roadworks 😤😂. Recently we stayed at my brothers in Finland. Having spent 20 years in a small Canadian town with over 50 different ethnic groups, one does notice differences in culture, but the only clashes were on the soccer (football in the rest of the world) field. I remember cheering the teams on, sitting on top of my father's old Landrover, at the top of my lungs, and so did everyone else. And then we moved to another community about 300 miles away and nobody cheered. It was the last game that we attended. I found that cashiers in Germany were very rude, as if it was a necessary qualification for the job. I also remembered a person from the USA "ma-am" ed me constantly, as if she were a private in the army and I was a general or something. Very disconcerting. But it takes all kinds to make a world, and we take the bad with the good.

Little investment, or thought, is put into cohesive public transport, which is expensive to use and often unreliable, so a car is essential. And why do new builds have little or no off-road parking provision! Older properties were often built pre car so road parking is the norm. When I did my driving test, parallel parking was an essential skill to pass. ! And don't get me started on the state of the roads, pot holes, mud, poor lighting ect. Love to know where my road tax goes. I'm in agreement that people are getting loud. Went to a cafe only the other day. My friend and I could barely hear each other because the four people on the next table were in full flow!! Food choice varies and depends where you shop and the time of day when you shop. And I think also where you live. Great video.

Being loud in public really is a cultural thing and a real source of conflict and anger when migrants don't adjust to the cultural norms of their new country. For example, here in Australia it is very normal to keep your voice down in supermarkets, shared spaces and public transit but there are certain migrants who are totally oblivious and behave really unacceptably and yes, I have called them out on several occasions. We were on a train and a woman was having a long conversation via FaceTime and talking SO loudly that the whole train had to listen - we were quite far from her and she was LOUD. When we lined up to get off I said to her that the whole train didn't want to listen to her and that she should be more considerate of people around her - I got thankful looks from the other passengers. For social harmony, people need to observe cultural norms. Interesting take on the variety in supermarkets. Here in Oz we do get different types of apples and potatoes etc but we take it for granted. Also, many supermarkets here have set times where they take measure to reduce noise in order to help people who struggle with sensory overload. I don't have that issue but gosh it's lovely to shop in peace and quiet! Cheers from Oz!

Here in the USA I feel there is to much unwanted and unneeded road rage. Also what I really miss is being able to go to a tea house and being able to enjoy the atmosphere , company, and food. The patrons have got so loud. Can you imagine a card game in the middle of you dining experience at another table. Card game sure just someplace else.❤🎉😊

Maybe it's the English language itself that makes us sound loud. Here in the U.S. people in cities and crowded restaurants etc make me feel almost queasy from the loudness of voices and human activity. Casual restaurants often have t.v. sports and music blaring as well. You can see you dinner companions' lips moving but you can't make out their words! So glad I live in a rural area with only two houses in view at a distance. I lived and worked in a state capital for over 30 years. I don't miss the noise, the traffic, waiting in long queues at the store's check out etc. If I chose to do do, I can go days without even seeing or speaking to another human being.

I agree. There’s a complicated algorithm to work through before I go somewhere to look for parking. Don’t go on market day, avoid school run and rush hours. I wanted to go to a car boot sale in town today and had to go early, i.e before the shops were also open in order to park. I got the last space (because my car is small) and had to shuffle backwards and forwards to get out. My other option is to park further out and walk. The cost of parking is also ridiculous.

Very interesting and affirming! I wouldn't dare drive in the UK now. The lack of food choice is interesting too. I used to rather like visiting supermarkets with my sister in Essex, not necessarily more choice but different things, but a lot more packaging and, especially in Waitrose, lots of silly labelling on fruit and veg, babyish things like 'yummy crispy lettuce' and 'lovely juicy apples', like people had to be cajoled into eating properly. Last time I went was a couple of years ago to West Yorkshire, and I must say it was nice, airy and varied things to see and do, driving still seemed very tight, mind.

Havent been for 2 years now, but i can relate to the roads and parking, add to that having to dodge the potholes in the North where i go. Didnt you have trouble paying for parking? I agree with everything you said. Living in the UAE the choice and quality of fruit and veg, even our regionally grown produce is much more varied. Im always shocked by the choice of fruit - apples one red one green, not a bramley in sight. Asda is particularly poor. The general size of fresh produce area has shrunk in lieu of ultra processed foods. It's bizarre to me. Yes to the general threatening behaviour as well and the uncouth language. Of course, every society has its unpleansat folk but England shocks me and why are men half naked at the first glimpse of sun. I appreciate the gentle delicate modesty expected in the UAE. I too love many many things about the UK but I always feel a bit of culture shock going back.
