In this mini-workshop, Kate Pullinger shares tips for writing fiction based on true stories through the prism of the work that went into her new novel Forest Green, published by Penguin Random House in August 2020. Kate Pullinger has written ten novels, including The Mistress of Nothing, which won the Governor General's Literary Award for Fiction in 2009.

Thank you so much for this video more as affirmation (on being on course) than how to. The last point is the reason why I have undertaken my current Story project started almost twenty years ago based on events twenty years before that. Sometimes, one needs perspective that comes with Age, Time, and Experience. Bravo.

Thank you for this video. I have a novel coming out later this year about an incident that took place in 1950. I changed the names of the people directly involved, but the case is well known in UFO circles. The event is fictitiously told in the first 100 pages and the rest of the novel is about a completely fictitious investigation (sixty years later) tied to the event. Was it real or a hoax? I spent a lot of time researching the case in order to bring those people directly involved in the case to life. Luckily, they gave several interviews and I could get a sense of their personalities.

I really like your advice for fiction writing. Thank you. Not everyone will like it. Getting into heads of characters is critical and happy people in happy land do not make good material.
