I’m a 65 year old woman who has only been playing the ukulele for two months. I was already feeling like my practices were getting in a rut. I just said to my husband yesterday, “What about the rest of the frets on the neck.” Thank you so much for teaching me more about the notes on the fretboard and fresh new ways to practice. I’m so psyched to learn scales and fingerpicking! 😊

I’ve been playing for 9 months. I try to pick one or two new songs to learn while polishing up the old ones. I’ve learned everything I can play from watching KZbin videos like yours which I appreciate very much. I need to start looking for tutorials for more drills. It’s not easy teaching yourself!

It's like this video spoke direct to me. I have been playing 8 months and know a lot of chords, but I'm stuck in the rut of playing with "play alongs". They're good fun, but I don't know a single song that I could play without the screen to follow. Getting outside my comfort zone creates a good feeling when I master smooth transitions to new chords.

Marco, I just found your channel. I come from a wind instrument background (clarinet). Strings have always been a mystery and a challenge to me. I am just starting out with the ukulele in my late 60's, and wanting to play more classical technique. I love the sound of the instrument. This is the BEST advice I've EVER gotten concerning learning a fretboard!!! The ones I've seen for guitar are really complicated and fail to suggest breaking it down into just five frets to start. I thought I had to learn THE WHOLE STRING before moving on to the next one!!!

Coming from the piano, these tips feel pretty natural and although I just started the ukulele, I missed something like that until now. One of the first things I've done was looking up my notes on the fretboard and try to understand the instrument. At the same time seeing that people only play different chords made me feel over-ambitious and crazy. Thank you very much for telling me that I'm not and playing chords on the ukulele is not the end of the story. Also thank you for the great exercises!

Your videos have been such a huge help. Your tutorials help me get better since you don't always just teach songs that are the same 4 chords over and over with the same strum pattern. Those are great too but I like how you include melodies and different kinds of fingerpicking to push the difficulty up some. Plus you're a great teacher, thanks!

Marco. All your tips and exercises are excellent. They all tie really nicely into my general strategy of learning this, my first instrument. I'm not learning any songs except for one, but I am just working on understanding the fretboard, refining chord changes and finger picking / strumming techniques. I've explored about 100 different ways of playing the same song. I'm gradually adding more chords as I inadvertently pick them up. I'm getting much better and playing far more cleanly. Thank you for making such clear and useful videos that tie into my general sensibility so well..

Really good points, Marco, thanks for sharing. Tip 3 & 5 is something we should keep in my mind all the time even after the beginner phase. Something else I think is worth mentioning might be to perfect the pieces we learn: playing in time (a metronome is really handy) with clarity (no buzzes) and close to no mistakes (e.g. no wrong notes). Diversity is key but making sure you can actually play the pieces so they sound good before moving on to other songs is more important I'd say. Thanks again for the video, loved the style! 😊

The very best thing for my own playing is having keen students who are always keen for new things. The majority of my studio is beginner players, but it's my more advanced ones who push me. Whether it's their interest in different genres or styles of playing or simply exposure to music I've not heard before, they keep me on my toes and looking for things to keep them engaged. Which is how I found your channel. I'm always interested to see what other teachers are doing and getting ideas for different exercises and techniques. I'm liking the stuff I'm seeing here and it's giving me great ideas. Thanks for the videos!

Hey friend, can I just ask, with you being a teacher of ukulele…. How much time would you say you devote to teaching music theory or musicality. How do you teach those things. I’m a beginner myself and I have alot of enthusiasm to play but I find it hard to understand notation, notes, chords, sheet music etc etc.
@TheGFeather
@TheGFeather 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheRealColt For my beginners, I tend to focus on how chords interact with each other and using the circle of fifths. Most of my students want to learn how to chord along to songs that they sing, which doesn't call for too much theory. I happen to be a giant theory nerd, and probably end up giving most of them more than they want. When I move into finger picking, that's when I start teaching both traditional notation and TAB. I used to disregard tab as being an inferior cousin to 'real' notation. Thankfully I've gotten over that. Both are valid and useful in their place. One thing tab can do is tell you exactly where on the uke to play a particular note, particularly with re-entrant tuning. My general approach is when there is a skill/song/idea that requires theory background, that's when I teach it. I don't think you have to have a highly in depth understanding of all the intricacies of theory to be a good player, but understanding why something works conceptually makes it easier to apply to other situations.
@TheRealColt
@TheRealColt 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheGFeather thank you for that reply. It helps a lot. I’m like you in that I’m nerdy for the details the whys and how’s. if I can comprehend the style of music and break it down I think surely I will better learn and master it, so Il research circle of fifths friend, thanks again for the advice. It’s welcoming to have people so helpful in the comments. The Uke community is strong 💪 and kind I’m glad I’ve gotten into this. Godbless

I play guitar and various instruments from the mandolin family I picked up the Uke earlier this year. I love to improvise I am not good with theory as I play by ear. I tend to move around the fretboard and for some reason find that I know where the notes are I need, this is something that I find easier on the Ukulele than I do on the guitar, strange. Love the videos Marco keep em coming.

I’m relatively new to ukulele, strings instruments and musicality all together really. I really want to be good on this instrument, the sound and playing of it is very satisfying to me but, the thing that stumps me with instruments and music is the theory of it. I find a lot of people don’t explain or place enough importance behind this overarching stuff. I want to understand how to put these notes together, I want to understand why things sound good together. I feel as if people knew the theory stuff it’d would make the practical learning of the instrument easier. But at the same time I feel there is a disconnect between these things. Even some apparent experts don’t seem to acknowledge the theory and when it comes to reading sheet music or understanding notation it seems more of a jungle than the fretboard. Anyways thank you for these videos Marco, they are fund to watch and helpful. Keep up the good work my friend

Great video, thank you! I am having new students that start right now, and was going to start "on old-fashioned way" with talking just these things (plus the most ergonomic playing position, so they do not get "sports injuries" right away). You explain these so nice, I am so happy when I can ask them to look this video! As being recorder and classical guitar teacher I have been really surprised how neglected these 5 (plus playing position and listening to the sound) seem to be in ukulele teaching.

I started playing the ukulele 2019 after already 4 years of playing the Cello and much more years playing the piano. Therefore it was obvious to me that I should know the tones that I play. One day a friend of mine was very impressed how it took me just a couple of minutes to figure out a chord I had never played. Just because I know the theory and the tones I was able to find a way to play a chord. I was verry confused that other people don't do it the same way and search for the chords online xD

Guilty as charged. I reserve picking my ukulele up because I always play the same things. But I also practice fingerpicking songs I have learnt so I don’t forget them. I lean towards jazz so I can play a few more difficult chords but I shy away from very tricky chords. I think it is very beneficial to be among other musicians to progress. I am a lone player so I find it very hard to get motivated. I have joined a few clubs but everybody strumming the same chord does not do anything for me.

Thank you very much, Marco for all your work! Looking forward to starting your online courses on Patreon :) P.S: I would recommend anyone to subscribe to his channel on Patreon is only 4,50€/month. It is a way to support Marco on his huge amazing work :)

Excellent advice Marco. I’ve used these practice techniques with the other instruments I play. And they work. I would like to be good at strumming,finger picking and different types of music. Thx again for good advice.

Hello Marco. I am taking classes since a few weeks, but also am watching your videos. Appreciate them very much and I think you are a great teacher and Ukulele player. One thing that I would like to ask you: could you please in your videos show maybe a better angle of your left hand finger picking work? Or at the beginning show the finger picking pattern for the piece of music. Sometimes it is “hidden” behind the back of the same left hand. And I am having a hard time figuring out your picking pattern. That would be great. Keep up the good videos and thanks again.

Tip number one. Learn the fretboard. I'm going around the circle of fifths and playing all major triads, first in frets 1-5. then 4-8, then 8-12. After I've mastered that, I will do minor, then diminished and augmented. Only after that will I start learning seventh chords. I started playing a Bach minuet, and hope to start a Fernando Sor Progressive studies later.
