Same. Jr has been my favorite player since I got his baseball card out of an Upper Deck pack in 1990. He was phenomenal! Even with the injuries that derailed his career from what it truly should've been. But that's how Ken played. He gave it all. All the time. So it was wayyyy more likely for him to get injured.

That’s the way I’ve always heard it too. The air currents are such that it’ll hinder some balls flying in. But you’d also figure, considering going from home plate to the warehouse means a fly ball being hit almost due east, there’d have been an occasional breezy day where winds from the west could overcome it, and aid a power hitting lefty. Edited to correct the direction of a ball hit to the warehouse

What makes this even crazier is Camden is maybe the second most hitter friendly park in the league behind Coors and yet the only time someone hit the warehouse was during a Home Run Derby. Whenever Camden next hosts the All Star Game, only lefties should be picked just to try and see if anyone else hits the warehouse.

3 ommisions. 1. The building was there when Abe Lincoln's casket passed through Baltimore on its way back to Illinois. There is a photo out there. 2. When Camden Yards was being built, they took the building apart brick by brick and cleaned them and put the building back together. Fears about hitting the warehouse were real. 3. Eutaw St acts as a wind tunnel. While the wind pushes out to the warehouse, the Eutaw St. Wind tunnel takes a large chunk of it out. Take the tour. It's very informative and cool.

@@doctorstrainlove6318 What the hell are you talking about? I made a harmless comment about Odor and you just want to start problems for no reason lmao. Also your generic hating lunch box quote of Gardner is completely wrong. Judge and Stanton are at the top of the team in batting average, homeruns, RBI’s, OBP, slugging, OPS, hits, and doubles. They’re also the top in at bats (546 + 507) while Gardner as only gone to the plate 384 times. Gary Sanchez is #8 in fielding and 4th in homeruns by a catcher. Our Farm is doing just fine with Luis Gil having an ERA of 3.07 and was an American Rookie All-Star in his league, Mike King is already a main contributor in the relief rotation and will most likely be brought into the playoffs with us, Loáisiga has a 2.21 era in 69 innings, I dont even need to say anything about Jasson Dominguez.

Excellent video, and great analysis. I've never been to Camden Yards. Went to old Memorial Stadium a lot in the early 80s, and almost every home game Saturday during the Orioles' 1983 WS run. That warehouse is absolutely iconic, and Camden has always been gorgeous on TV and in pictures. Hitting the warehouse at Camden is similar to hitting an apartment rooftop at Wrigley. It's just not all that feasible, as tantalizing as it may be, and have only happened once each (at least as far as I am aware at Wrigley). You have to hit the ball exceptionally hard and at a high angle that is usually enough to kill flight distance. The elevated base of the warehouse makes the difference, as if it was on the same level as home plate, there would be and additional 30 feet of fall range where the ball could still hit it... and make it much more likely. Case in point, the apartments at Wrigley get hit 4-5 times a year, minimum... but usually within 15 feet of ground level. I also wonder if there may be some manner of air pressure effect that builds up against the warehouse and causes HR balls to slow at a slightly higher rate in that space. That would be more likely with large crowd, and... well... they often can't give away tickets to Orioles' games the past few years.

there is one other factor.. the warehouse itself working as a wind inhibitor.. a breeze blowing out to right field is great and all..but that breeze hits the warehouse likely creates a deadzone.. meaning the balls get the nice boost while still in the park.. but there's kind of a crosswind killing the balls velocity the closer it gets to the warehouse

Guess before watching: the warehouse at “street level” is actually elevated higher than the playing field adding a ton of distance.
@DAK4Blizzard
@DAK4Blizzard 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the field is 14 feet elevation, Eutaw Street is 33 feet elevation, and the overhang attached to the B&O Warehouse is 15 feet above Eutaw Street. Therefore, the ball still has to be 48 feet in altitude, or nearly 35 feet above the baseball field's elevation, when it approaches the warehouse to clearly hit it. That implies a projected distance at least near 500 feet is required.
@Veganerd_

@@DAK4Blizzard Hmm.. then how did Griffey's 465 footer hit it? >.>
@DAK4Blizzard
@DAK4Blizzard 3 жыл бұрын
@@Veganerd_ Fair point. I didn't account for the ball possibly having a steep angle upon impacting the warehouse. Which is very relevant for targets that require moderately high launch angles. Griffey's homer hit the warehouse just right of the Warehouse C logo, so the homer aligns with the middle of the flag court. In terms of pure horizontal distance, the ball traveled about 435 feet before hitting the warehouse. Given the projected distance was 465 feet, it's implicit that the ball would've traveled an additional 30 horizontal feet if its flight was allowed to continue and hit hypothetical ground with same elevation as home plate. As the ball was about 35 feet above home plate with just 30 feet of horizontal distance remaining, it must've had a pretty steep down angle of near 50° upon impact.
@mrmacross
@mrmacross 3 жыл бұрын
@@Veganerd_ don't they measure HR distance purely on horizontal displacement? That is, a 470-foot HR that lands on the upper deck in one stadium is more impressive than a 470-foot HR than touches down on Waveland Avenue outside Wrigley Field. I think the legendary Pujols HR off Lidge in the 2005 NLCS was only estimated to be like 406 feet, but that's because there was nowhere else for the ball to travel in Minute Maid.

I had a chance to watch a game at Camden Yards a couple of years ago, which doesn't happen often because I live in the Pacific NW and don't travel much. Beautiful place to watch a game. I even watched Aaron Judge hit a moonshot home run to straightaway center field in that game. IIRC, that bomb was one of the three longest of the 62 home runs Judge hit that year. (I think Judge has hit more home runs at Camden Yards than at any other stadium away from the Bronx.)

In a similar vein, nobody has EVER hit a baseball OVER the scoreboard at Wrigley. A few people have hit balls into it, and a golf ball was hit over it once and a football was kicked over it once, but nobody has ever hit a baseball over it. EDIT: According to the tour guide when my family and I toured Wrigley Field on my golden birthday a decade ago, if you do manage to hit the scoreboard (which in and of itself is EXTREMELY difficult), it's an automatic dinger.

All balls hit onto Eutaw Street have their own plaque. Just hitting the street is a phenomenal achievement. The ball has to clear the wall then clear the patio just to hit the street. You have to clear the street to hit the warehouse. BTW, there are vendors (Boogs BBQ) and all kinds of people walking there while the game is going on. They wouldn't have put a main thoroughfare in a spot where batted balls are hit very often. It happens every now and then as the plaques prove but hitting the warehouse is INSANE. It will eventually happen during a regular game but I love the fact that "not being able to hit the warehouse" is a thing. OPACY is a national treasure and everyone should try to get there at least once.

When it was built, no one wanted Camden Yards name to go away (people were upset Memorial Stadium was being torn down). I remember stories about how many times they thought it was going to be hit and, if I recall right, the first three floors don't have glass windows in that section. 30 some years and it seems fitting The Kid is the only one to have hit it.

Not bad. However the other huge factor for why baseballs don’t hit the warehouse is the wind tunnel that is created down Eutaw Street. When Janet Marie Smith, Larry Lucchino, and HOK decided to incorporate the warehouse into the ballpark’s design they collectively failed to realize this was going to occur.
