Typically the goalie coach will come in because they have most likely played either in the NHL, college or major junior. Also if the player is on the ice that long when the team with that player touches the puck the ref will blow the whistle because the guy on the ice is most likely injured not just taking a nap.

I do believe that teams have a person that they give tickets to so he is in the arena just in case all goalies are injured. This way they have a player in the arena so he could put the pads on quickly. It happened in Chicago recently for the Black Hawks. The guy came in and made 7 saves and did not allow a goal.

There's the emergency backup (which is what Scott Foster was). The question in this video was if the emergency backup is injured too what happens. (I suppose it could also be if both goalies for both teams are injured since only one of them can use the emergency backup).

Holy cow, I actually got all of these. I remember reading about picking a person to be a goalie from the arena by reading about it in a kid's sports magazine when I was about eight or nine. The rest make sense if you have a firm understanding of the NHL rulebook and it's quirks. Does anyone else remember reading about the goalie rule in a magazine? It would've been about 20 years ago that it came out.

Same, had he said that the puck was passed backwards and missed by a teammate and goes into their zone, and the opposing player retrieves the puck, then the goal would definitely count.

I only missed the one about who goes in as goalie after the emergency goalie because you didn't give the option of "anyone" you gave the option of "a fan in the stands". Anyone who has watched hockey long enough to consider this would know the first choice in this situation would be the team's goalie coach, so you stated that question confusingly and as the teacher I'm throwing it out and giving myself a 100.

Us Golden Knights fans learned a LOT about backup goalies last season. As, at one point, so many of our guys were injured we were, at one point giving fans at home games notices that if they stayed the may in fact be called upon to get in between the pipes in a moment's notice

the last one is pretty common, yet the situation you put it in made it seem very unusual. should be rated about 3 because any hockey fan who has watched at least a full season usually knows how offsides work, and knows offsides is called off if the opposite team clears the blue line for you. I've seen datsyuk exploit this rule many times

Saucy A1 ....but then the puck went around and entered the 'offensive' zone AGAIN before the future goal scoring player left the zone, making him offside again...once he touches the puck the play is dead.

as a player and a ref, in my opinion 5 should be no goal. the rule is if a player brings the puck under possession back into his zone, or passes it intentionally into his zone. but this is not intentional

#2 - There were occasions prior to the mid-1960's when travelling teams in the NHL would have their one goalie either injured in the pre-game warm-up or during the game. The custom was for the home team's backup goalie to suit up for the away team. The NHL brought in a rule that all teams travelling on the road had to have two goalies in their squad.

I guessed wrong on the first downed player/offside question. But to be fair, I thought you said something about the goalie badly misplaying the puck which then went into the net. I got the injured goalie one right as well. As I recall (as a Caps fan) a few years ago one of our equipment managers had to step into a game. Might have been preseason, but pretty neat either way. But good quiz, the animations were perfect.

I only missed one but it was the weird penalty shot one. Also, just as a cool little fact, the jersey tuck rule also exists in minor hockey, albeit to a lesser extent. Basically the players must have it so that their jersey number and name can be clearly visible by the referees. Just one of those weird NHL rules that you wouldn't expect to carry over to Minor hockey.

For Riddle 2, they may sometimes bring the Goalie Trainer in, this happened on one occasion. The (Canucks i think) needed a backup, so they put their trainer in. He didn’t get to play, but still...

The refs should have given Avery an unsportsmanlike when it happened. What he did was clearly unsportsmanlike. Never understood why the NHL had to "rule" on it after the game. The refs weren't doing their jobs.

at the time it was legal. It's not unsportsmanlike.. If it was anyone but Avery, i think it would still be legal. The NHL had a hardon for Avery. You're allowed to screen the goalie, how is waving your hands and stick in front of him trying to screen him any different than waving your ass in front of him? It's not.

Another thing about the offside goal the goalie "badly misplayed the puck" which means the goalie touched the puck which means the goal should count because the goalie was the last one to touch the puck and somehow send it all the way to his own net.

Death slap badly misplayed does not mean he touched it. I remember a goal scored on Marty. He goes to get the puck and drops his stick and the puck goes between his legs and into the net. He never touched it but it was misplayed.

It depends - the goalie would have to make an intentional play on the puck, otherwise as soon as a shot on goal occurs (when the puck crosses the goaline in this scenario) play is immediately blown dead for offsides

3:40 is a goal. He misplayed it, which means played badly. PLAYED. This is a goal. The offsides rule is the player past the blue line can’t TOUCH the puck before another player crossing it does. It is fine to put it in the net. Plus you said the goalie touched it. If you mean he didn’t touch it, the word you looking for is MISJUDGED

#1 the Avery rule only applies if the player is waving his stick specifically in the goalies face # 2 the team can also put 6 players on the ice and put one in the net as a goalie without pads or use him as an extra attacker
