Every league in North America has the one venue from days of old that'll never die. For MLB, it's Wrigley (NL) and Fenway (AL). NHL and NBA have Madison Square Garden. The NFL has Lambeau.
@luke-i1w2 ай бұрын
Arrowhead should begin to fall into the category of Lambeau. It is iconic. It's very design funnels noise to the field (which is against the rules with new designs). If the Chiefs move, that whole "loudest stadium in the NFL" thing goes away. Look up the video of John Elway whining because it's too loud in Arrowhead. That is a legit piece of homefield advantage being taken away if they tear down Arrowhead. The Hunts would be stupid to do that. Plus, they have more money than ever now and they should fund the renovations themselves.
@Snidde223 ай бұрын
Arrowhead is fine. Spruce it up a bit and call it a day. It's got fairly pretty lines and is easily accessible to most of the city with ample, if expensive, parking(in a city that is very car-centric). That being said, they'll still overcomplicate it and overspend, crippling public coffers further. Oh well.

You darn right Lambeau will never be replaced, it's the Fenway/Wrigley/MSG/Churchill Downs of the NFL! Every league needs at least 1 venue that's old but charming/legendary. Lambeau is that! We take great pride in taking care of it, and are hosting the 2025 NFL draft with it! Ftr, Lambeau Field technically isn't the oldest stadium currently in use in the NFL (Soldier Field is), it's the oldest CONTINUOUSLY used stadium since Soldier field and War Memorial in Buffalo wouldn't host their NFL teams for a few more years, the Bills played in War Memorial in 1960, while the Bears finally played at Soldier Field in 1971. No other NFL team has stayed in their home longer than us!

There are other reasons. A big reason for the Highmark replacement is some structural deficiencies in the upper deck. Engineers working for the state, not the team, estimated that the stadium would need to be replaced or rebuilt in the 2030s due to deterioration of the rebar in the concrete due to freeze thaw and vibration. That's a big reason for the stadium issue in Buffalo finally getting traction with politicians after 20 years of the team asking. Sure, they could rebuild the existing building. But the argument more or less came down to do we pay 1.5 to rebuild what we have, or pay 1.8 for a building with nicer amenities.... Or 3 for a dome.

Yea but what do u want the federal govt to mandate no city can provide incentives? In America that eoukd be called communism and i doubt the supreme court would even allow that. An NFL team does bring in tax revenue and most NFL owners could put their investment in the NFL into an index fund and make more money off of it. Not saying I care about the owners at all, i dont. I do care about what an nfl team means to a city. Govt could also force nfl teams to allow the cities to buy the team then they get all the profit if the owners refuse to pay to build stadiums but again, even a liberal court would be 50/50 on allowing that law to stand given the implications. Like I could see this the supreme court allowing the govt to take over sports but it would be over some made up transgender scare, def not doing it in a way that benefits the people of a city over a billionaire owner. So prolly better cities just negotiate for the best deal possible to get the team and not be afraid to let the team leave cuz in most cases they will get another team at a decent deal since there is a market.

The only thing they did wrong was close up the open end, that was a significant home field advantage. But it has great sight lines, not even the nosebleed seats are bad, the open steel framework is very Pittsburgh, and the grass field itself is something the players love. Of course each stadium is different, some are owned by the team owner, some owned by the city or county, so it can get complicated. But ultimately, it's BS to tax (which means you just take the money) versus lets say an investment. I would be more prone to give money to a local stadium rebuild if I knew I was going to get a return on my investment. As an architect, if there were that kind of money to be had in these public projects, I'd be living a lot better than a 1br apartment... For a lot of these, it's lack of maintainence or desire for new amenities or technological advancement. Being a bills fan, I'll use Highmark as a good example. The stadium was built in 73 and wasn't made for the large electronics of today. It wasn't until the last renovation that it was able to even support the ribbon video boards and modern broadcast infrastructure in a meaningful way. A big reason the Bills didn't have prime time games for 20 years, aside from the drought and bad teams, was that there wasn't a way to hook up the sky cam in the stadium that all the prime time games used. Now, a big reason for the replacement is that the exposed concrete structure of the upper deck is suffering damage from exposure and vibration. And it became a question of, do we keep slapping billion dollar bandaids on the building every 10 years, or spend 2 billion and have a building you don't have to touch for 30 years outside technology and finishes. As for a building like FedEx. It was built by the lowest bidder, it was built with exposed structure. And it's ownership put absolutely 0 effort into upkeep so it's falling apart. Compared to Baltimore which took care of their building of the same era. And I can say, aside from some faded plastic on the seats, that building still looks pretty good

Arrowhead is as antiquated as the coliseum was, and if chiefs fans remain in denial about this and hold up renovations I’m sure the hunts will have no problems relocating the team. This isn’t college football. The nfl doesn’t care about tradition and history. If you don’t have an ultramodern world class stadium that’s beautiful to look at you’re already behind. That place is an eyesore from the inside and out, no different from the dump the panthers play at.

It definitely needs upgrades. But something tells me they want to keep the “layout” so it remains extremely loud compared to new stadiums.

@@georgehenan853 that a fucking lie. The stadium is no where near one of the worst stadiums in the league. Nothing about the stadium is in disrepair. And it wasn't that long ago it was renovated. I bet you're from KS talking down about Chiefs' fans not being excited fund two brand new stadiums in KCMO. Not every stadium needs to look like it should be on the Vegas strip.

@@StuntzMcKenzy2D this is the nfl. Stadiums shouldn’t be ugly eyesores. Arrowhead is hideous from the outside. Looks like a stadium from the 60’s or 70’s. Because it is. It’s a dump. Stop being so defensive about it.
@StuntzMcKenzy2D3 ай бұрын
@@georgehenan853 "don't be defensive while I'm being defensive." You said something deal with it. Once again you sound like you're from Kansas or you don't pay bills. Because you're not acknowledging what comes with giving the Chiefs and the Royals both new stadiums in a city that is already complaining about how high rent and/or property taxes already are. You speak as if money isn't a finite resource in an economically shakey period of time.

I truthfully don't think the superdome will ever be replaced. I was born in New Orleans and that stadium is a beacon of hope in the city. The Louisiana historic landmarks guidelines states that the "Building has to be 50 years old and also retain enough of its original architectural design and materials to properly reflect its reason for and period of significance." So by the time that superbowl rolls around there will probably be work to have it designated as a landmark. If they don't get the ball rolling by then, I will.

I go from stadium for work. Of the stadiums I’ve been to the only one I felt needed to be replaced was KC. It looks like a great place to watch a game but underneath it was designed poorly. I don’t see how it can be fixed. The best option is probably to replace. Here’s the thing… if they are going to replace it with a stadium designed by someone that has no idea what they are doing they should probably just save the money and keep playing in the stadium they have. For any city looking to replace a stadium my advice would be don’t make it harder than it needs to be. Just call the builder and tell them to build you Cowboys Stadium. Of all of the stadiums I’ve been to it’s the best by a bunch.

Kansas City resident here, the vote for funding that was rejected was almost exclusively the Royals fault. The proposal read like the kid who writes their paper at 11pm the night before, and isn't good at it either. The length of the tax extension was something stupid like 40 years, and if this video is any indication on how long pro sports stadiums will last it would probably be longer than the stadium would last. If the Chiefs were asking for the tax money and not tied to the Royals I would have bet money that it would have passed. This was very much a case of a group project that failed because one kid didn't do their part. One point of clarification. The tax extension was for the Royals to get a new stadium and the Chiefs would renovate with their money. Also under state law if a tax measure fails they have to wait 1 year to put it on the ballot again. They actually tried to get around this, but it will probably be on the ballot again in April.

In Philadelphia, there was once a stadium called Veterans Stadium, aka The Vet, which was home to both The Philadelphia Eagles, and The Philadelphia Phillies. It served both teams for 33 years. It was replaced by two stadiums, Lincoln Financial Field, aka The Linc, for The Eagles, and Citizens Bank Park, for The Phillies. The Linc is now more than 20 years old, and Citizens Bank is now almost 20 years old, and, amazingly, so far, there is no talk of replacing either stadium. I remember, when The Vet was imploded over 20 years ago, one fan of The Vet, who remembered that stadium from when it was brand new, was so heartbroken, that he said that he would probably be crying every night for the next 33 years after the implosion.

It’s crazy that the Ravens stadium opened only 1 year after the Commanders stadiums. Yet the Ravens stadium still looks like a new stadium. Since they’re tearing down RFK Stadium. It only makes sense to build a new stadium there for the Commanders. It has rail access already.

Amazing to me how buildings like cathedrals, museums, etc were built by incredible artisans and craftsmen 200-400-900 years ago and are still not only functional, but they are treasured pieces of architecture. But, spend $1.5-$2.5 on an nfl stadium and BAM!!….it’s busted up, falling apart and deemed obsolete after 25-30 years.

I don't think taxpayers should be on the hook for "ANY" money to build a stadium. Let the billion dollar league finance and pay for their playing arenas. Last time I went to a football game, I guess it was only 1 game, tickets were like $60 per and then I had to buy a 6pack of beer to get a single cup and buy a full pack of ball park franks to get one dog. It was NOT a family friendly outing what so ever. So ... I choose to not go, if you choose to go great, but I shouldn't have to subsidize the cost of your entertainment. I'm all about subsidizing the cost of things which has a necessity to them like roads and public schools, but your entertainment doesn't even make the top 10 million of things. If I have to pay to revamp roads / traffic around said venue well that falls into a necessity and ... I suppose (lol). If a football stadium wants to defray the costs .... then partner with the local baseball team, a huge concert promoter, something else that can bring in the people and the $$'s .... or go ahead charge $100's per ticket and make the fans support the TRUE cost of their entertainment.
