THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO! Because of you, I fixed my mini-fridge ALL BY MYSELF for $9 using the part link you provided! This was completely out of my realm, as I have never thought of myself as someone who could repair an appliance. I purchased my Hamilton Beach mini fridge freezer combo for my classroom in 2014. In 2019, it quit cooling. It sat in my classroom closet for almost a year while I thought it was broken. I called 3 appliance stores in my city with no luck. One lady said it would be cheaper for me to just buy a new mini fridge compared to the cost they would charge me to repair it. Before giving up and taking it to the dumpster, I googled and found this video. After I got the guts to remove the starter relay, mine was in fact rattling, just like yours. I ordered the part you linked on Amazon, waited two days for it to arrive, again got the guts to replace the part all by myself and now I have a freezing cold mini fridge to start the school year. A good teacher has done their job when their students can demonstrate mastery of the material. You sir, are a good teacher! Thank you! Namaste, Mrs. Buckley

Jessica Buckley awesome!! Never be afraid to attempt to fix something that is already destined for the dumpster. I’m glad you stepped out of your comfort zone and got up the nerve to tackle the project. The next time you need to repair something it won’t seem as scary. Best wishes to you in the classroom this year.

Checked this out on Magic Chef Wine Cooler - Start relay appeared to be working - doesn't rattle- compressor starts, gets very warm, refrigerator doesn''t cool. It appears that overload relay kicks it out. Question I guess is if the overload relay is doing it's job and the compressor is overheating. What's the next step if this starter relay is working properly - is it likely the overload relay kicking off too early, the compressor bad, low refrigerant charge? What's next if the start relay isn't the culprit?
@DustinRogersinMO8 ай бұрын
How long does it run before the overload trips? If it’s a matter of seconds, it may still be the relay. Check out this newer video where I show a faulty relay that doesn’t rattle. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3zPhZ2LaciFjKM If it runs for a long time before the overload, I’d suspect low refrigerant.

I have a two door 3.2 CU.F mini-fridge which has a separate door for the freezer and refrigerator. The refrigerator portion will only cool to about 57 F but the freezer gets crazy cold down to like -20 F. Unlike full size refrigerators these mini-fridge units that have a separate freezer and refrigerator section do NOT have an air passage that goes from the freezer to the refrigerator, each section is sealed off with no access panels inside. So what I'm trying to figure out is why does the freezer get super cold but the refrigerator section does not. Obviously the compressor is working just fine since the freezer gets super cold so it's not a power or relay issue.
@DustinRogersinMO Жыл бұрын
I’ve never messed with one of those, so not sure, but I’d think that there has to be a way for the freezer air to get to the fridge compartment.
@marketingmajor8126 Жыл бұрын
@@DustinRogersinMO One would think so but with these two-door mini-fridge models the individual compartments (freezer/refrigerated) are completely sealed and just one piece of molded plastic with no air-holes or passages. I'll upload a video of it.

Hi, I just got a mini fridge with this issue and when I checked for continuity between the pins and ground my multimeter beeped I was wondering if you could please explain if its safe to use or if there are any solutions to this thank you
@DustinRogersinMO Жыл бұрын
If you have continuity between the flat pins and ground, there’s a possibility that the motor windings inside the compressor have an internal short to ground. If you plug it into an outlet, one of two things is likely to happen. Either the overload protection in the fridge will trip and disconnect power until the overload cools down, or it will trip the breaker or fuse in your electrical panel. I have a more recent video where I show the overload device. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3zPhZ2LaciFjKM

Thanks for the video. I have almost the same fridge. My issue is that it runs constantly and won't shut off. The compressor feels hot actually. Ideas? (It DOES cool the fridge)
@DustinRogersinMO2 жыл бұрын
If it’s running constantly, I’d suspect that it’s low on refrigerant and doesn’t cool down enough for the thermostat to signal to stop the cooling cycle.
@patriecemarshall75654 жыл бұрын
I should have continuity between the neutral and hot terminals, IF the thermostat is turned up. Well, I don't have continuity, so I suppose the thermostat is faulty. But I DO have continuity between the neutral terminal and the ground terminal, which you suggest might be caused by an internal short in the compressor. I'm sure it's possible to have both issues (faulty thermostat AND shorted compressor). But I'm wondering if you might know of one situation that could create both issues.
@DustinRogersinMO4 жыл бұрын
patriece marshall if your compressor is shorted, I’d focus on that issue first. I’d unplug the wiring to the compressor and make sure the short is in fact in the compressor and not in the wiring somewhere.

@@DustinRogersinMO Thanks for the quick reply Dustin. I'll go dig out my multi-meter and test it out.

You can also test the ohms on a relay. My relay was not rattling and it read 5.6 ohms. Still will not cool.

Please clarify...was the compressor doing anything beforehand? Mine comes on but the fridge doesn't cool. All pipes in the back stay warm. Could it still be a $9 doohickey problem or are we talking refrigerant loss and a much more costly repair?

@@seanmatthews6056 my compressor would not start. If your compressor is running non stop, you likely have refrigerant loss
