The PCV elbow was broken completely in-two on my wife's caddy. I used a hose stuck in my ear to check the TB-boot and the back end of the intake for vacuum leak. No guesswork. When I put the other end of the hose where the elbow was at the back end of the intake, it was screaming. I cheated and didn't pull the intake, but replaced the plumbing to the PCV valve with a simple piece of hose. It was a pain to get the hose on the tube up in the 'black-hole' at the back of the intake, but it saved hours. Spark plug boot puller/pliers was the tool that saved the day. Can't thank you enough for the video.

Recommendation: put a few spots of gasket sealer between the IM and those gaskets to hold them in place for assembly so they don't fall off. Don't use super glue, it's not friendly on plastics (the manifold) and might cause premature wear on the new gaskets as well.

@@cdarnau Just wondering Chris ? as an expert mechanic, do you think that the Dexcool coolant being used in earlier GM models Like Cadillac and Aurora causes the gaskets to deteriorate ? I'm thiniking of draining out the Dexcool totally in my Aurora, and going with a Universal type coolant. A machine shop in my area puts in the Universal in all their rebuilds. I'd love to know your expert opinion -thanks Chris.
@cdarnau
@cdarnau 2 жыл бұрын
@@grantp4022 So the reason they do not use dexcool in the rebuilds is because Dexcool only helps if the engine is completely free of air/oxygen contaminates the system. This is why at the GM dealer we always Vacuum the system down to remove as much air and oxygen as possible. Once Air/Oxygen is introduced to the system the Dexcool starts acidify and cause rust and corrosion which can in turn eat away head gaskets, intake gaskets and cause low flow concerns due to rust build up in the system. Dexcool is only good for 150,000 miles. So if you're going to flush the system if definitely would not hurt to change the fluid. If you want to spend the extra money you could buy Evans coolant to fill the system which is a top notch coolant. I use it in all my restorations. Here is a link to it. amzn.to/3Csa37u Hope this helps and explains a little more in detail. Thanks again for watching!!!

I have a 2011 DTS and have both the P0171 and P0174 codes on my car. The check engine light comes on for 2 to 3 days then comes off. The car has been at the dealer three times for this and they cannot figure out the problem. They said the cars fuel pump was checked and intake manifold gaskets were replaced. When I mentioned to them if they inspected the boot on the side and intake hose from the inner elbow the advisor said they checked all that already and that it was good. What else should I do? My car has 74,000 miles on it and still has 2 year platinum coverage warranty. It runs good and all and the idle is good it's just the check engine light coming on and then off after being on for a few days. The check engine light comes on more when the temp is cooler out and not as much in the summer. Thanks.

What is that PCV boot called? Is it part of the manifold elbow set? Also, I remember having to replace a small elbow UNDER the boot at one point when I was throwing a code and getting too much air in causing it to rev several years ago. Any idea what part that might be or a part number for it? Otherwise, this was a GREAT video and made it way easier to approach, as I have been putting off this repair for about a year now. Living in a state with emissions testing means that I haven't been able to legally drive it for a year either.

In Denver the only auto parts store to carry the elbow was Napa. That elbow is not available at advance auto parts ,O’Reilly auto parts, or AutoZone. I replaced the elbow in 2020. It’s 2020 June 22 and I replaced the boot on the end of the intake manifold that connects to the throttle body. I got the three bolts tightened up wonky, not Flush, and I have a gap where I can see one of the pins lower front so there’s a gap between 2 aluminum brackets. Worse than that I burned up the brakes driving 10 miles no 6 miles with the throttle position sensor stuck on the highest setting. I had to turn the car off at stoplights to keep from crashing into the cars ahead. Then it was hard to start the car. I left home, drove a few miles and the car died at a stoplight the idle dropped from 750 to 250 100 zero. After fluttering the accelerator I got the car started and got it into gear but it stayed at 3850 RPMs. I had to use the brakes to drive. It was horrible. At the end of 6 miles smoke was coming out from the brakes. I couldn’t even stop the car to pull into the driveway. So I turn the car off with both feet on the brakes. After talking to a mechanic who suggested that the throttlebody might be misaligned I took a visual look at the connection to the right of the new boot and discovered that one of the alignment pins lower front was showing which means that the whole throttle body is misaligned to the right of the stationary bracket mounted to the engine. The boot to the left does not seem to be the problem. But I’m getting an error code P0101 for mass airflow sensor and throttle position sensor P0121. Previously the only check engine light was the error code P0405 exhaust gas recirculation position sensor circuit. So now I am stranded on June 23, 20202 1/2 to get tools to reposition the throttlebody to the intake manifold. I don’t know if the throttle position sensor has slipped out of place or what the hell is going on. Further note when I put everything back together I forgot to tighten the 8 mm hose clamp on the air intake where it connects to the aluminum throttle body housing. Then I discovered that the hose clamp around the mass airflow sensor had been loose the entire time I’ve owned the car since Christmas 2018. At least the throttle position sensor was not a problem with the loose air intake. Oh and I put the cover over the top of the engine that I had removed because it trapped heat and rotted out that rubber elbow by the power steering pump. Here in Denver we have very little rain. Driving in snow with red roads a lot of road grit could get loaded up on the intake manifold on the plastic body where the fuel injectors poke through. That was the reason for putting the cover back on. The cover is to help keep dirt away from the fuel injector holes in the plastic intake manifold sometimes called a Plenum. Well that steel plate on the rubber boot to all the right of the intake manifold seems to be the source of the rubber cracking. It seems to be a terrible design. I got the dorman boot and blue gaskets. The gaskets would not stay in the grooves. The gaskets kept popping out so I knew there was no way the gaskets would work. So I reused the old gaskets. The Felpro fuel injector O-rings did not include the little plastic rings at the bottom of the fuel injector that keep the spacing of the O-ring proper. So that was a complete waste of money buying Fel-Pro O-rings. Sure the old O-rings were somewhat hard from heat. Really the biggest problem was the rubber boot with a crack going halfway around that could not be seen till it was removed. Now I’ve got these other issues. I’m wondering is there a gasket between the two metal aluminum brackets of the throttle body? I have FIXD to view the check engine light codes. The dash light does not disappear after resetting the code right away. So I thought I had the vehicle fixed and the light will go off after 25 miles. There’s got to be a better way to test my work and be sure that the check engine light is not on. I really got hosed driving across Denver and now I’m stranded with no tools. I hate to tow it to the dealer and pay $1000 ransom. So the order of the day is to re-tighten the bracket on the boot to the aluminum throttle body and get the spacing proper.

@@jameswhite1319 The problem is the rubber coupling from the aluminum throttle body to the plastic plenum, if left dry when fitting will pucker, creating a huge air gap. I solved the problem by using silicone lubricant in a spray can. Also the gaskets want to fall off if you do not clean all the oil off. I use brake cleaner on the gasket grooves of the plastic plenum. This design is ass backwards from Dodge which has the gaskets facing upwards. Having the gaskets face downwards makes it risky business to put the plenum assembly back in place. I had to give the plenum a 1/8 twist two-seat the rubber gaskets in the plenum grooves on the aluminum intake. The silicone lubricant made the rubber boot 🥾 slide on the aluminum throttle body effortlessly. I did this job 4 times. Two 2;of the boots puckered and were returned as defective. With a cordless ratchet and quarter-inch sockets to remove the fuel rail and plenum bolts, the job takes between two and four hours.

My wife's Cadillac Deville 2004 4.6L Northstar has the same error codes. The local shop (an hour away) decided that it needs a mass air flow sensor. After watching your video and a bunch of other ones, I pretty much think they are wrong. Going to order the seals and fuel injector o-rings and see how it goes. Oh, and they quoted my wife an hour and a half to change just the mass air flow sensor? Looks like a thirty minute job to me. Am I missing something? BTW your video was the best one.

Thinking out loud with the keyboard here... Since parts like these are usually disintegrated due to heat exposure, have you ever tried insulate it or fabricobble some kind of heat shield from foil tape to reflect heat away? Maybe a piece of fiberglass heat shielding tubing over the rubber. ?? I'm just always looking for ways to improve longevity of silly things like this.

Jay Vee I have never tried it. But it is really surrounded by heat because it is in a circle Cup of the intake. But I understand exactly what you’re saying.

Is it true that the head bolts on the 4.6 Northstar have a tendency to stretch and need replacing?
@d.c.3220
@d.c.3220 2 жыл бұрын
Some earlier models had issues with narrow threaded head bolts installed and eventual head gasket failures from the head bolts becoming loose. They updated the bolts in 2000 and even better was 2004 and onwards.

Exact problem I just had with my 2004 Cadillac DTS. Never would have guessed it was the manifold to throttle body boot. And it's actually called a (plenum). What? The whole car fixing world calls it a rubber boot.

@@cdarnau thanks. Is it a "thing" with those intakes to get the gaskets wonky where you may have go back and adjust the gaskets due to them shifting around when installing? I caught a thread on the cadi forum where guys were talking about doing that
@cdarnau
@cdarnau 11 ай бұрын
@@davidreynolds4684 the cheaper gaskets are trash. Not gonna lie. They will work but they will be wonky for sure and soooo aggravating to stay in place. Sometimes the kit is cheaper than just the plenum by itself so gaskets come with the plenum. Those go right in the trash and I spring for the GM seals every time. They stick in there solid. They are a little more expensive but with the peace of mind you will save from the aggravation

@@cdarnau I havnt done one yet but prob next week. They looked like silicone or was that an optical illusion? The deville got 2 lean codes. 2nd cylinder both banks. It runs perfectly. My first thought was the egr tube elbow. The car isn't here so I'm not sure if that's the issue or not but I was looking how to swap it out and it said pulling the entire intake. I couldn't find an exploded view of that end. From videos I saw it looked like there should be room enough to r&r the elbow wo having to tear the entire top off the engine. I can't imagine them making it so tight you can't get in there with a pokey tool and a big roach clip to get that elbow out. That'll make a man want to cut an opening for a door to enter the basement then plastic weld that sucker shut! A thousand bucks seems extremely high for that job. I don't have a chiltons for that car but it looked like about a 3hour job by the book and 2 hours in real time. Maybe I'm way off.
