EA888 1.8 TFSi 2.0 TFSi Problems
Our focus is on the EA888 GEN 1 & 2, although some of this relates to the GEN3 we will do another video covering this newer and heavily revised engine.
Replace the timing chain tensioner when it starts to degrade before it becomes a major issue.
Common tuning problems on the 1.8 TFSi 2.0 TFSi N75 valve problems
When boost is lumpy or irregular it can often be down to the N75 valve.
Swapping out the N75 is relatively simple, and there are performance alternatives around that last longer and perform their function more smoothly.
Air Sensor issues: Air Filter Oil Warning You should avoid using an oil-impregnated filter since the air flow sensor will get clogged. If the air flow is too great it can cause the air flow sensor to burn out, so if you've upgraded the turbo and are getting flat spots this could be the cause of that issue.
Use of BOV dump valves of Blow Off Valves
Because of the loss of system pressure caused by the installation of a blow off valve or dump valve, difficulties with engine control may arise.
We have a video coming on the K03 K03s and K04 turbos and how to tune them. We also have an in depth video covering the tuning of the 1.8T engine and how to get 350hp+ and what pitfalls to look out for.

Seems the issue is based on the gen 2 engines, the piston rings are addressed on the gen 3 EA888 engines as far as i know on the audis 2012 and up and other chikdhood issues like the chain and other things. I driving the audi a5 coupe 1.8 tfsi gen 3 with no issues at all, its a very reliable engine and low on fuel consumption and having already 190k miles on it and it runs like new, better then the nowadays cars that just came out the showroom, so i truely believe this vid is in regards to the gen 1 and gen 2 TSI/TFSI engines that having thise issues.

Yes you are right, the GEN 3 is quite a different beast so there will be a separate video addressing these to follow. The Gen 3 (10 years on) is still without any patterns of problems, but looking at the revisions they have addressed most if not all of the areas in this video in the Gen 3 version.

2015 Q5. 2.0 CPMB/flex fuel. Before changing the oil I've used Liqui Moly Sludge Remover flush and Xado Atomic Flush (both require you to drive 100-120 miles with the flush), then added about 150 ml of LM Mos2 to the new oil. It created a 'film' which helped seal the rings. My consumption went down from 1 qt per 650-800 miles to 1qt per 2500-3000 miles within in the next few months. However, I earlier replaced the spark plugs and the PCV valve as well, which helped I think. These do not simply fail suddenly, but start to decline after 40,000-50,000 miles and will contribute to oil consumption (carbon build up; pressure), so don't wait until the plugs or PCV fail officially with check engine light - change them at around 50k. They can go as longer but will underperform. Use a quality fuel injector cleaner every oil change and stay on hi-detergent gasoline (93 octane Shell or Mobil) and your injectors will spray well. Change oil every 4,000-5,000 miles. These step will go a long way to getting your consumption down.

First of all: congrats for your contents, really complete and interesting, i also have a question for you: I own a 1.8t aeb with regenerated K03 turbine, I also removed the old and worn out catalyst, the car runs good, but sometimes, when the turbine is spinning (specially at low rpm) and i release the throttle the car makes a strange "cutoff", sometimes the turbo seems to give more boost, sometime less, the ecu reports an issue: "turbo pressure too high" but on this engine there isn't a pressure gauge, my mechanic has no idea about the issue, what do you think? Tank you

This sort of thing can be quite hard to diagnose, common things to check, is the air flow sensor in the intake working correctly or is it soiled/dirty. The N75 and or Diverter valves could be sticking. Did the car get remapped as you've removed the cat and this will change a few things around how the engine burns fuel and what readings it gets from sensors. I'm also guessing there is not an atmospheric dump valve and the exhaust and intake are stock factory options apart from the cat. I'd be curious to know if it is running rich or lean as this can shed a little light on the subject. The 20V 1.8T engines are great units, and not much goes wrong with them.
@mattiapicchi7264
@mattiapicchi7264 2 жыл бұрын
@@torquecars Tank you for your reply, the engine is stock with the exception of the cat and didn't remapped it, I just replaced the air flow sensor due to a problem that now is solved (sometime the engine went out for some seconds during accelerations), mechanically speaking the engine is good, oil and filters changed every 10K Km, as you said the problems are all around it (sensors and valves) but these problems (in my opinion) are the most annoying to be solved. Rich or lean? I can say that the engine crackles from the muffler when downshifting. I'll check N75 and diverter valves, I already cleaned the throttle body.

Hello mate car is a 2015 polo GTI 1.8. Pretty sure it’s the EA888 engine, got a p0340 fault code for camshaft sensor but this doesn’t appear to be the case. Bought a crankshaft sensor but can’t find where it goes. Any idea what the problem could be?

It will not be 100% sensor. It s going to be timing chain, that probably jumped over a one tooth

Which year is it? The log book will usually show the engine code which includes the engine code, or it is stamped onto the engine block itself. Anything after 2012 should be pretty solid and after 2015 revisions most problems have been ironed out.

How is 1L every 1000km even a thing to be accepted. Its 2 oil changes basically per oil change interval. The European market always had crappy parts for their engines. Premium price for a primium vehicle doesn't equal to lets use more plastics and cheap materials for it. Why do you think the endless leaks and maintenance are always present? We wont even get into the electronics. Why haven't the European market stepped its game up in reliability like the Japanese market by now. You can have 4 iterations of ea888 due to epa but not reliability? 🤔 All European vehicles are planned obsolescence in my humble opinion and engineers are pushed to make them profit friendly.

It’s not normal to burn 1 litre of oil per 1000 miles!
@torquecars
@torquecars Жыл бұрын
It is annoying this happens and is "regarded as normal" but here in the UK most of the main VAG Dealers will generally refuse to discuss the problem of oil consumption as a problem unless it is consuming around 1 liter every 800 miles! What is your experience on these engines and their oil consumption my friend?

@@torquecars I'm buying exclusively low milage cars with naturally aspirated petrol engines from Asian manufacturers. The challenge is where I live the market is flooded with turbo diesels and turbo VW petrol engines. So here and there it's tempting to buy a VW 2.0 or 1.8 turbo petrol engine, but then I stay away by watching this content... so thanks ;)
