@@GreggAdventure Great advice though I had already pulled the drive and backed up the files. Since I was cautious with the first time heating briefly (~ 1 minute), the issue immediately returned. Repaired again heating for a longer time (> 3 minutes) appeared to do the trick since I had nothing to lose. System is now up & running KZbin for over a week to "stress test" the graphics chip. I applied new thermal paste (Arctic Silver 5).

Heat guns are pretty much the same as a reflow station. Do this next time though. Use a "no clean flux" next time you do this, and shield the components surrounding the GPU with kapton tape and aluminum foil, so you don't bake those.

I picked one of these up from a storage unit. I fixed the failed attempt to open it up from the prior owner and plugged in a universal power supply. Naturally Dell has to be a jerk and make it a 19.5 volts . Well tried both 19 and 20 and both show a screen turn a monochrome blue, it blinks a few times and does nothing. It basically does nothing but turns on with no post. or Dell logo screen. Maybe this is it but maybe not, any thoughts?

Yes, it can work but how long it stays working will depend on other things like how hot did the solder get, did it reflow good enough throughout the GPU grid? The best solution is to have the GPU removed and the whole chip re-done with new solder balls. That will last for years. This method might get you a day, a week, maybe a month. But as the computer gets used and the GPU heats up and cools down again, the solder is already weaken on the molecular scale and will crack again at some point putting you back in the same boat. Buying a used motherboard will render you in the same mess sooner than later. A certain % of GPUs were designed flawed and this model got some. Same with HP DV6 laptops. They failed in the same manner. I tried this method and got a few to work only to watch them fail within a day of bench testing. For this Dell, I used a heat gun set to 400 degress for 1 minute. I put 2 pennies on top of the chip to help the solder. I used tin foil with the square cut out exposing the GPU but covering the neighboring components. If you use the computer in a cool place and don't game on it or watch long videos, you'll get more mileage. Use good quality heat sink and clean the cooling fan and fins real good before reassembly.

My light is white, everything powers on fine then after login screen everything goes blank except for the mouse cursor which I can move all over the screen but that's the only thing I can see. Or if a pop up comes up it will show but that's it.
@GreggAdventure5 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a video driver issue.... Could even be a virus. If you have another machine, might be worth trying a virus scan on the drive, by hooking it up as an external drive. Otherwise, my 1st move, would be to boot the machine into SAFE MODE, and/or try Windows Auto Repair, which can resolve SOME boot issues. If all else fails, and your troubleshooting skills are limited, make a Windows 10 Boot install, on a USB, using their media creation tool (it's VERY EASY), and do a clean install of Win10. This very much sounds like a software situation

@@GreggAdventure I hit F2 at start up and changed the Boot from Drive to Boot From Hard Disk and it worked fine until the Windows update. Then it went back to the blank screen. However, ctl, alt, delete then logging out the user and logging back in is correcting the issue for now, so it's just weird. One of the reason I went all Mac. But the monitors in church use a Windows program so I wanted to get this running again. Thanks.

I removed the heatsink, cpu, cleaned off old thermal paste, and put new thermal paste on. cleaned up around the the mobo to make sure no dust/thermal crust was left... it still has orange light. do you think the cpu just burnt out while the paste was so crusty? this client has an impeccably clean unit. He is an old man, has never moved the computer, has a clean home... so unless you know another fix i am assuming the cpu is just burned. i dont have an extra processor on hand to test it. and if the gpu is burned out i would say not worth fixing.

For my system (2305), this involves moving two jumpers (CMOS and Password), power up/power down, and moving the CMOS jumper back to its original position. Apologies for my long comment since some of you will find this useful... My Dell 2305 has a new life as a Win 10 and Zorin (Linux) dual boot machine. Incredibly, this 9-yo now runs like a mid-tier PC. Using a heat gun on the BOTTOM side of the PCB under the GPU permanently resolved the cold solder joint issue. Heating the GPU directly was only a temp fix for me. MSFT is still providing free Win 10 upgrades (offer had previously ended): www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 With 8GB RAM and OEM HDD, the PC was upgraded with an AMD Athlon X4 610e and it runs a faster with 4 cores. Under Win 7, I tried an SSD upgrade but the OS wouldn't boot. Now running Win 10, I'll give the SSD another try to speed things up once everything is stable. Before the Win 10 upgrade, I installed Zorin 15.1 for its Window-like interface and touchscreens. This opened a new computing world with Linux. www.forbes.com/sites/jasonevangelho/2019/06/05/its-time-to-pay-attention-to-zorin-os-15-the-best-desktop-linux-distro-youve-never-heard-of/#21f4c2fc1c80 Good luck to all.
