Great to hear Marvin. Just remember it’s common for a new pond to have some ups and downs. So don’t freak out if you get algae blooms initially. As long as the filtration is good the pond will find a nice balance. Not every pond does this 🤞. But it is very common.

After watching your inspiring videos, I have dug myself a 3m by 5.5m pond (.7m deep). It was hard in the beginning doing it all by myself at the age of 67 with 3 bypass. The digging is done now and all the dirts spead all over the garden. Waiting for the liner and underlay to arrive. Meanwhile I built a bog filter from an IBC tugged away from view. Using saw off milk crate and a heaps of free carbon rods for support with 1 pc GEOHEX™ Erosion Control System and 4 bricks and 90mm pvc pipe, it works out pretty well. It can withstand the rocks and pebbles in the IBC extremely well. Cost less than $250 all together with rock & pebbles. Oh yes the IBC is protected with a reflective thermal shield. Will be using the drain storm pit as my intake bay where I can easily place a basket and sponge since it already have sectioned steps . Thanks for your inspiration. Thanks for your video again.

You're still a child! 76 here - 3 heart stents and dug my 10' X 12' X 4' deep pond single handedly. It took a while, but was completed 2 years ago. Oh! And many mountain trips to gather many many rocks to cover the entire liner!.

It depends on the type of bacteria. There’s good bacteria and bad bacteria. The bacteria that process the nitrogen are vital.

If the algae is brown, quite short and feels kinda like jelly this is good algae (diatoms). If it gets too thick you can scrape it off, vacuum or siphon it up. It’s a nice food source for fish so you can back off on the feeding.

Hi Kev, I am in South Australia. I have a 10 metre stream leading to my pond. Since Winter has hit, i have noticed the stream has gone from being clear to being covered in algae (interestingly the pond itself is pretty well unchanged - it's just the stream which is affected by this extra algae). This type of algae really sticks to the pebbles in the stream and is very slimy to the touch compared with string algae - it is quite difficult to pick up actually because of how slimy it is and how well it adheres itself to the pebbles. Its colour is a mix of kinda fluro green and has dark brown mixed in as well (whereas string algae I have had is more just dark green and is easily grabbed onto to pull out - and not as slimy). Have you seen this kind of algae before? Is it just a different species of string algae, or is this a different beast altogether? Even in my other pond, it seems to grow mainly where water is running - ie. waterfalls & streams, rather than in the actual pond. I have read that beneficial bacteria die off at under 10 degrees C, so not sure if that has anything to do with it? The other thing to mention is that I have a lot of plants in the pond, but hardly any at all in the stream itself, as I didn't want to interrupt the flow of the water. Perhaps that might be the issue? if you think it is better to fill the stream with plants, what sort of percentage of the stream would you say should be filled with plants? Sorry for all the questions :) Thanks mate.

I have similar algae in winter. I don’t know exactly what it’s name is…I call all filamentous algae string algae (don’t know if I’m right or wrong). I think it grows in the stream for a few reasons. 1. Shallow water in the stream better light penetration. 2. No fish to have a nibble. 3. The bacteria aren’t as active. Again I’m not sure if I’m right or wrong, that’s just my hunch. I just accept it. Sometimes if I can be bothered I’ll remove some. Usually once the weather warms up things get back to normal. Maybe plants will help. As I’m typing away..I’m thinking 🤔 and my courtyard stream has no visible algae (lots of plants in the stream). My dream pond stream has lots now (the impatiens have all died off in the cold). There are still some evergreens in the dream pond but perhaps not enough. But again one pond is new and still processing lots of nutrients that came in during construction and one is very established so hard to say for certain.

They will breed like the plague if there is too much food available. If there is a nice balance you’ll hardly notice them. That’s been my experience anyway. I’ve never had them clog the bog.

A properly sized bog with proper flow rate will eliminate the green water. Usually within 2 weeks. At least that’s been my experience and many others that I’ve received feed back from.

It’s more the balance between filtration, fish and feeding. I’ve lots of ponds in full sun all clear. Having said that it’s also true that it’s very hard for algae to grow in full shade.

Hi kev I have watched many of you videos on pond and greatly inspired we got our pond renovated with setting up a bog filter. We have a pond made of bricks and cement, also concrete floor. Upon your advice i put lots of rocks and pebbles on the floor. Then as we intriduced water a week ago it was crystal clear for a few days but now turning green. I observed the water is not green but the walls and floor are turning green. I have been running the bog 24/, have planted bacopa and mint. Kindly can you advice how can i get rid of the algae , will the bog clear it eventually ? Have no leaves falling and no fishes

My pond after more than a month now is not as clear as it was earlier, now the pebbles and the wall are turning blackish due algae growth but I can still see the bottom. My phosphates, nitrogen, and ammonia are all zero or almost zero, but my pH is close to 9... Should I just wait it out and hope it establishes? Or should I add some pH down? It looks just as green as the picture in this video. I've added some bacteria powder several times, perhaps I should add more?

The pond is 6 foot x 13 foot and almost 3 feet deep. I filled it with City tap water and added a dechlorinator. The pH yesterday was at 9. I filled the pond on July 1st.

What’s that in gallons? You gave the bog volume in gallons. If your tap water is 9 it’s no wonder the pond ph is 9. Is the bog filter sized correctly, with right flow? As bacteria populations establish they naturally lower ph. Another option is to have the water flow through peat moss (in a mesh bag), that naturally reduces ph. It might stain your water brown.

I’ve done everything you have got and I have to physically drag algae out of my pond weekly.i only have a small pond and have a lot of filterage and media, rocks and plenty of surface area, waterfall and everything as well as a uv light and plants. I’m running out of room for my fish because of the plants and filters. It’s above ground so I don’t know if that makes a difference

Kev I think I have messed up bud. I wanted white sand in the bottom of the pond but they sent out white silica sand. It's been two weeks and the pond water is still brown... Fish are all good as well as the plants but it is a ugly brown colour worse than tannins and it doesn't seem to be going away. Any suggestions?

It could be a diatom bloom due to the high amount of silica. If that were the case I think it will sort itself out once they consume all the silica. That could take a while. I wouldn’t feed the fish they’ve got plenty of food available.

I cleared my 2600 gallon 4 foot deep pond in 5 days. Single cell algae, pea soup green water, and massive string algae over the rocks draped like a heavy blanket! It has been crystal clear with all string algae gone. Yes, I do incorporate a uv filter, and a 40 gallon pre-filter but neither prevented the algae overtaking the pond. I spent many$ buying every algae 'fix' available for more than a year. Some minor results were achieved, but were short-lived. It's now been 3 months of living in the California desert, with 100+ degree days on end and 10 hours of direct sunlight and my pond is crystal clear. My rocks look like rocks again and not the green clumps of the past. This 'fix' cost me $2.29 ! HYDROGEN PEROXIDE! one pint of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide for every 1,000 gallons of water. My pond, my fish, and myself are very happy and healthy!

@@Ozponds I am certainly not a chemist but H2O2 does contain anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. While solving my algae problem 99%, the 'sludge?' on the gravel bottom is totally gone also. I say 99% because there are very small dots and speckles on my rock walls that I assume might be some form of good algae. I just know one dose of H2O2 really worked for me! Wish I had known this years ago!

Try aquatic plants for filtering water in deeper water

They take over if you can’t control the nutrients. Removal in deep water is quite difficult. You also need plants that grow throughout the year. But yes plants are good filters 👍

Yes. Especially the kids they stir up all the debris. I like it because then it gets sucked into the intake bay and deposited in the bog. In the bog it can settle and then I pump it out when I clean.

Mine oddly goes cloudy, green then algae dies and it's still cloudy ... then goes green again and round we go. I got some filter pads I put in my intake bay and got some fancy aerators and that helps too. But still tweaking placement of some pumps and aerators and I think I need more rock in my regeneration bays too

Your pond is still new and finding itself. More rock will provide more surface area so that’s never a bad thing.

What is the brown algi in a pond please. Is it bad? I'm very new to ponds. Only have space for a tiny one. But in the sun I get brown stuff over the stones and plants. I don't have a filter. I was told I didn't need one. I have lots of air getting into the pond. I have to keep it shaded as it does go green but not pea soup green more like a pond that you visit green lol. I'm in the UK. The brown algae is generally diatom growth this is not a problem. If you feed the fish I would stop or greatly reduce it. The diatoms should be producing loads of food. If the algae gets too thick (it should feel kinda like jelly) you can vacuum, siphon or net it out. Hope that helps 👍

I love ALL of your vdo's and have watched all of them multiple times! Thank you for doing this. Wish I could transport you to Thailand to help me with my pond! I have a 6 x 8 x 1 meter deep natural earthen pond with no liner for my 20 ducks and 7 geese. The water has turned green. They are still swimming happily in it - but I just wanted to find the best and economical way to keep the water cleaner and not green without using a liner and possibly without a filtration system, if possible (?) You say that the single cell algae need more surface - can I add more aeration to the pond and then some stones / rocks to the sides and bottom - and then some diatoms weekly? Do you think that this will help? I have tried to add a variety of plants to the pond such as water hyacinth, duck weed and water spinach - the ducks ate them all up in a matter of seconds! Vetiver grass along the edges of the pond is the only thing they're not eating. The problem is they grow much too fast and we can hardly see the pond now! I feel like ripping them all out and start all over again. Any suggestion you can provide will be much appreciated.

Clay lined is very hard, so is ducks and geese. Basically your main issue is too many nutrients being added to the pond. It’s like trying to outrun a bad diet, if you eat bad food all the time it’s very hard to exercise your way to weight loss. Therefore your first thing to do is reduce the number of animals using the pond.

If the water is not crystal clear, I can live with that - as long as it's relatively clean rather than green. When you clean the filter - where does the solid waste go? You’ve gotta go massive if you want to filter for the ducks and geese, probably 20-30% bog filter, intake bay, and an additional high flow filter that will capture a lot of the waste and you can flush out more often. It’s a big expense. You said the ducks and geese are happy why not just leave them happy in their green, muddy pond? When I flush my filters I use the water on the garden, it’s great for the plants.

@@Ozponds I have also been using the water from the pond for the garden and the soil is coming back to life. It has only been a year since I started to use this plot of land for the animals and for growing edibles of all sorts. I do not use any chemicals on the property - and make my own compost. The soil was really bad and hard as a rock. The animals have been helping with revitalizing the soil all around. I know that it would be a very big expense to do all the filtration system and in the end the water may not be as clean as I had hoped. On that note - I think that I will clean up the edges of the pond - add some rocks around the edges as well as inside (bottom?) the pond as surface for the algae - then add freshwater mussels, frogs, fish (what kind?), turtles (?), diatom once a week and some water plants (would water lilies in containers work?) - and lots of aerators. How about adding geotextiles at the bottom of the pond to keep the mud in place and then stones / rocks on top? Total depth 3 feet enough or too much? One thing good about this spot is that when I dug down, water came out of the ground so I don't have to top it off much at all - only a bit once in a great while during the dry season.

You really just need to experiment. All I can do is show you my ponds and offer my experiences. Your pond is so much different to mine, your biological load is way more than I would choose for my ponds, therefore you really need to do the experiments. Once you find out what works share it and help others 👍

I dunno. If you build it they will come. Whatever critters are in the area that like water will visit the pond. Some will just visit, some will stay.

I had loads of frogs in my pond and I believe the tadpoles are good for the ecosystem and I think they eat the algae plus mosquitoes larvae - but my caretakers ate them all! Now I have to go and get more frogs!

If I understand you clearly, you put you biospheres in the waterfall? I have a 210,000 gallon irrigation pond without fish and used now just for pleasure. I have wildlife and a wolf pack we raised for educational and healing programs. We all swim in it. I have not found anyone who will come out to my rural area to help maintain or knows how to. I am in Los Angeles county in California. How much bacteria should I need for full sun exposure? Thank you.

That pond is so big with so many variables. Bacteria need wet surface area, therefore if you do not have enough bacteria, you need to have surface area available that the can grow and multiply. That could be underwater structures, more plants, rock, pebble or dedicated filters.
