hey everytime after the restart part 4:35, it restarts back into the internal macos, when i go settings and try to restart into the external one it says this "The version of macOS on the selected disk needs to be reinstalled." and then in the install MacOS sonoma thingy when i click it to install 4:12 it says "This volume cannot be used since it has a secure token without any users. Please use disk utility to erase this volume" when i do that and try installing sonoma again it does the same thing

Nice workaround man. It'd be interesting to see the difference in load times and wot not between the internal version of the game and SSD version.

Usually drives over USB-C are 10Gbps, which is 1,25GB/s, while internal SSD of even M1 is like 3GB/s, so yeah, unless you will find some crazy ass 40Gbps enclosure and SSD then yeah you're gonna beat it, but it's pricey.

Hey, I am trying this method and I have this problem: when I install sonoma on my ssd it goes fine until it reboots. When it does, it takes me back to the internal disk of the mac. So I think: "Well, then I just have to change the boot disk from options and reboot". Well, I try it but I get this error: "Failed to set the boot disk. An error occurred while setting "External SSD" as boot disk: Could not complete the operation (SDErrorDomain 108 error.)." I'm translating the text from Spanish to English, I don't know if it will be entirely accurate, but that's what I get. I have a Mac Mini M1 256GB and the SSD is a SanDisk 2TB fast enough, I do not remember the exact model, but its no a bad thingy. If anyone has any idea what I may have done wrong or what the problem is, it would be helpful. I have tried to follow the steps to the letter and I would say I have done everything as it said in the video. Thank you very much in advance.

Sounds like an issue with the install, I would wipe the SSD and try again.

@@andrewtsaitips yeah, that's what I thought and I did what you just said but I get the same error. I will keep trying, but if it failed twice, I don't know if it will work the fifth or sixth time. Even so I will try again. Is it possible that it has to do with some security setting in Mac? On reddit I've read something like that about this problem but I dont want to commit to change something sensitive and my Mac breaks hahaha. Btw, thank u so much

What a wildly time consuming process just to get the game onto an external SSD. Hopefully Apple fixes this, as it would be nice to be able to start a download of the game on the boot drive, then move the app package before it's finished downloading to an external drive to finish downloading.

Why did you download macOS from that website instead of apple's? does it make that easier?

Interesting solution. I had no idea you could install & run macOS off an external SSD. Was it lagging for you? Can you partition the drive for macOS and use the rest for backups and such?

Using APFS you can dynamically allocate space to different partitions. It wasn't laggy but was when I did the screen recording.

That’s why I’ve bought Satechi USB4 SSD enclosure + 4Tb m.2 ssd. Not cheap, but fast as my mac mini m2pro internal storage. About 3000 MB/s
