Straight forward no bullshit, informative video. I appreciate it man. I usually get phase issues when I double track guitars in GarageBand. Typically I’ll reverse the phase invert on one of the tracks, sometime it doesn’t always negate the problem. As you said on here, EQ’ing can present certain problems. Good to know the approach on how to get rid of them after seeing this.

Great video. Simplifying the complex, cutting through the noise. Bravo. Questions: Bucket 1: why not just use linear phase eq all the time then? Is there a different sound to them? What’s the advantage of the non linear phase eq. Bucket 2: if I’m writing using mostly electronic instruments, I’m still gonna come up against phase issues (right?). So what are the common issues there. I assume the fixes remain the same tho (?) Thanks again!

You are only dealing with polarity 180 degree phase relationships. Things are normally not 180 degrees out of phase. To try to truly correct phase relationships you must use ALL PASS filters. I would suggest Little Labs IBP's. I have spent 40 years dealing with phase issues. It is very complex. These YT videos don't tell the REAL story. Good luck to all, just know it is much more complex than flipping polarity.

Excellent info! Thanks. Especially the bit about the Linear Phase EQ. Had no idea a regular HPF introduced phase issues. In place of using the Voxengo plugin, couldn't you just turn snap off and nudge a clip backwards or forwards to align them?
@BrassPalaceRecording7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Anthony! You very much could. In my experience, time-aligning by simply looking at audio forms doesn't necessarily mean your tracks have the best phase-relationships. It's weird, but I go through the paces with a time delay tool such as the Voxengo Sound Delay.

Very good to see this problem and corrective process explained. But how would you solve this issue over a plus 30 track production, where there is a micro latency delay occurring over respective clips/samples in the session all the way down, from drum tracks, bass, guitars, keys, strings etc to vocals? All these will incur some degree of frequency masking but even when that is reduced by mirror EQ adjustments, there is still the global issue of clip time alignment and phase slip between tracks in the whole session at m/s level. The problem is audible and unfixable unless you can nominate one recurring sound as the target or master timescale, and then somehow use analysis tools to apply a global track clip fix that slave to that master. How to do that would be some sort of Eureka moment. Doing this manually by slip editing at sample level would be a huge task track by track/clip by clip, and you'd still need one accurate target track as your reference point. I get what you say about phase inversion but that wont fix micro timing issues and the problem is still there. I guess the SoundRadix Pi plugin would be the answer but its pricey. I wonder if there might be some other way. Thank you so much and seasons greetings.

Why at 4:38 you say it’s fine even if the correlation meter hits negative?
@agustinconti54612 жыл бұрын
Sounds great, great explanation too. But as usual the real world does not work like a tutorial. How? When you have 2 tracks of a double bass recorded with a mic and a DI (piezo) and the correlation meter changes from left to right every other bar or beat. What do you you in that case? If I select an specific note/beat (like in the tutorial with the snare) that is to the left (out of phase) it fix it but it puts the next bar out of phase.

Excellent tutorial ! Only question I have, how to pan my overheads for the "left-right method" if they are not on 1 stereo track but on 2 individual mono tracks? Both hard left and then each other track hard right to check the correlation, correct?
@WhyLogicProRules6 жыл бұрын
Correct!
@WhyLogicProRules5 жыл бұрын
@@davidtorres3162 I suggest using the Gain plugin to switch the polarity for either the left or right side of your overheads. If your overheads are 2 separate mono tracks, that should be easy. If your overheads are a single stereo track, then you can open a Gain plugin in Dual Mono mode to flip between the left and right signals. If you need more info on Dual Mono mode, check out this post: whylogicprorules.com/dual-mono/
