Brian Flechsig from Mad River Outfitters and the Midwest Fly Fishing Schools shows you how to tie a Nailless Nail Knot to fix the broken factory loop on your fly line. This method can be used to add a loop to ANY fly line or sink tip that doesn't have a loop.
We've had alot of requests for this one a glad to finally get around to it.
Here is the chart for mathching stiffness and diameter of Maxima Clear with your fly line:
2wt-3wt- .013" 12lb
4wt- .015" 15lb
5wt-6wt- .017" 20lb
7wt- .019" 25lb
8wt-9wt- .022" 30lb
10wt- .024" 40lb
11wt-12wt- .026" 50lb (Rio Saltwater)
* These may differ a bit depending on the manufacturer/taper/diameter of your line

Great tutorial! This is precisely the method I use. Several years ago I treated myself to a really nice rig from a company that was once a reseller of really nice gear, but they are more into clothes now. That rig was the first fly line I ever had in over 40 years with the welded loop. I thought it was great until the line sheathing cracked at the hinge point at the end of the double line for the loop. I complained to the company at the store where I bought the rig, only to be told by a very young (“green”?) clerk that my cast was defective. (I’m pretty sure I was casting tight loops before he was born.) I went home, cut the looped end and nail-knotted the but end of a tapered leader to my line as I had done for years. Now, given a choice, I will NOT buy a factory welded loop end line. I prefer the tried and true. Thanks for putting it out there!

Just getting started with fly fishing on the shores of the Red Sea in Saudi Arabia. Was practicing my casting and nearly snapped off the manufacturers loop on my fly line. This video saved me from having to order a whole new fly line (and then wait 2-3 weeks for it to arrive to start practicing my casting again). Thanks!

Thank you so much for this. There was a time when my grandpa's best friend was one of my older brother in laws and he taught me that you don't want a big knot at the end of your fly line or coming off the mono before your leader because it would spook the fish. I live in Cherokee NC and have seen tourists spook trout in different ways and a lot has to do with their line and presentations. Love your videos and still love to learn. God bless y'all, Tony

Thank you for this video. I never use the welded loop on my flyline anymore. Just a short section of mono with a perfection loop. One of the biggest reasons being that the welded loop doesn’t like to go through guides, and if I have a fish make a run with the welded loop in the guides that could lead to a break off or a broken guide.

Thanks for this video. We do the same in France. Way better energy transfer thus a better turn over of the leader. Loop to loop eats off a lot of the energy from the fly line to the leader. It is so preferably to tie a knot instead of a loop to loop.

@@Madriveroutfittersabsolutely agree. Fly fishing education is somehow done thru publicity by the industry and it is totally biased. For example, a Shooting Head is designed to cast FASTER yet the industry sells it to cast farther... Folks better invest in knowledge and skills to actually UNDERSTAND the fly casting physics dynamics, mechanical properties of the tools and bio mechanics required to optimize those tools : fly rod, line and leader ... In France, fishing guides and instructors follow an academic cursus just as boxing, kayaking or climbing, where we study the dynamics and HOW TO TEACH. Our model has one referential common to every guide in the nation... We aim to provide an easier access to fly fishing to a wider public ... just as easy to practice let's say judo or football... I think we are talking the same language and having a similar approach maybe. Cheers and keep the cool stuff coming on !

I don't know, I figured out how to tie the "nail knot" stream side without a nail. Of course that was before the "welded" loops, which as I haven't fished since moving to Oklahoma, I hadn't even heard of till this tutorial. Like your vids by the way. Love how you show how uncomplicated fly fishing really is. Anyway, I've done it as you just showed, tried those nylon PoS's that you shove into the end of the fly line, and a few other unmentionable ways as well. The inserts always seemed to work their way out and just getting them in centered and all the way was a real pain. Even with a drop of glue they would work out. I tried the loop to loop because I thought it would be quicker and easier, my thinking being that's how I did it as a kid fishing worms on spinning gear. I don't like the loop to loop at all. For me, it always affected my cast and how the leader laid out on the water. Most of my fishing was done on a couple of small streams on the north side of the San Gabriel mountains. Very tough fishing, lots of brush, trees and granite so I went through a lot of leaders. A LOT of leaders, LoL. Which brings me to my question, finally...How long is the actual taper and how many leaders would you have to tie on before cutting in to it is really an issue? As I recall that section of the line(I generally just used level lines as they were much cheaper) was at least several feet long. All my gear was stolen shortly after moving here :0( , including my favorite split bamboo, a 9'6" that was handed down from my great grandfather to my mother. He brought it with him from Germany and that was 1895? so over 100 years old. Had to re-wrap the guides when it first came to me and that was it. No clue what weight it was that was long since faded, if ever there. No clue who built it. But it would cast a 3 and a 7 equally well. Anyway, starting over now since I got a new rig for Christmas and I do believe I'm going to get some poppers and go after large mouth. I think that could be fun, lol.

Really good videos. Simple and to the point. I have a question for you about this video. In a previous video you were showing how to tie a perfection loop in the fly line if it doesn't have a welded loop. So in this video if your loop beaks, why wouldn't you just cut down behind the broken loop and just tie a perfection loop? Are you just showing another option, or a better option? I'm just starting to get into fly fishing, so I'm sure this is dumb question on my end.
@Madriveroutfitters
@Madriveroutfitters 5 жыл бұрын
Have never shown or recommended tying a perfection loop in the fly line. If you saw that, it wasn't from Mad River Outfitters for sure. Perfection loops are for leaders, not for fly lines. You should never tie a knot in/with your fly line under any circumstances. This is the much better option here. Not a dumb question and thanks for watching.

@@Madriveroutfitters Thanks for the reply. I was watching one of your videos, but I just misinterpreted what I was seeing. Seeing that there is a loop in the end of the fly line, I just assumed that when that loop breaks, you just tie another loop in the end of your fly line. I assumed wrong. Lol. What do you expect from a lifelong bass fishermen from the South.
@rompus23
@rompus23 5 жыл бұрын
@Bradley Smith You're right, there is a lot to learn. Just cut off that loop on your fly line and use a nail knot to connect a piece of monofilament to your fly line. Then just tie a loop in the end of that mono and you're good to go. It took me a couple of practice runs on the knot, but it's not that tough to do. Just do what He did in this video and you will be ready to go.

Hi Brian, I'm not a flyfishing angler but love the videos anyway. One question please, wont connecting the leader via loop to loop (after doing what it shows in the video) mean that you're connecting mono to mono, creating a cutting connection as the monos pull against each other when fighting a fish? To clarify, in watching one of your other excellent tutorials, connecting a leader to a flyline via loop to loop connection, you say to go 'line through leader' rather than 'leader through line' as the latter creates a cutting action. I feel this might have the same outcome, am I incorrect?

@@Madriveroutfitters I agree totally that connections need to be done correctly no matter the materials used but that wasn't my point. I'm going to build the leaders your suggest on your "Build Perfect Nymph & Streamer Leaders" and it starts with 20lb Amnesia so I guessing I can? @weisswurstfruhstuck8523

Why you make this part so short? I think I do it too long maybe. I take underarm length at least usually. I think this transfers the energy better from the thicker part towards the thinner actual leader at the end. Am I totally mistaken here ?

Hey Brian and all staff at Mad River Outfitters. So based on the above chart of matching stiffness and diameter of Maxima material with your fly line, does this work too for the starting end butt of "make your own leader"? I mean, I have a 2wt and 4wt fly lines and it cannot start with the same Maxima diameter eg: .015" (15lbs) for 4wt? Please advise. Thank you. - Muz @moose
@muz3003
@muz3003 3 жыл бұрын
I found another video on "Buiding Your Own Leader" and the suggested formula starts with Maxima (Chameleon) .022 (30lbs) and .017 (20lbs) for the butt section, then goes to Maxima (Ultragreen) .015 (15lbs) and .010 (8lbs) for the mid section, then continue with the tippet section accordingly. I just need to know what material and diameter to start making own leaders for my 2wt, 3wt and 4wt fly lines.

Best would be .013" Maxima Clear which is the 12lb although depending on the line you may have to go down to .012" which is the 10lb. Just make sure you get a good bell curve and that the stiffness of the mono matches up with the fly line.

Why tie the perfection loop rather than nail knotting your leader every time?
@Madriveroutfitters
@Madriveroutfitters 5 жыл бұрын
You can certainly do that, but most folks prefer to utilize the "Loop to Loop" method. Saves having to tie a nail knot each time you want to change a leader. Nail knotting also cuts into the fly line and if you do it too many times, it can cut into the ever important taper. More to come on this though so stay tuned and thanks for watching.

Got a question. I will use 20lb maxima clear with a. Loop just like you did here. But then can I use 10lb maxima ultra green on a perfection loop for bass fishing ? It would make it easier cause 10lb mono is the smallest mono that will hold a square knot with a perfection loop. I would use about 6 feet of that 10 lb mono and use it for topwater or streamer bass fishing.

Quick question, when using this technique, how often do you have to replace the loop? Does it get damaged? I used this technique a while back and I kept replacing the loop after a 1 or 2 fishing trips and I managed to cut the front taper off my fly line over the course of the season.......which makes me think I did something wrong. I have a new fly line and the welded loop is beginning to crack so im wondering what is the correct way to use this technique? how often do I need to change the loop?

What's the difference between the nail knot used here and the nail knot used to attach the fly line to the backup line? I've used a loop created from a piece of mono to pull the tag end through a nail knot while attaching the fly line to the backup. I noticed you didn't used that "loop" for this knot. Is there a major difference, can either method work for both applications? The final results of both knots look awfully similar. Thanks, A novice fly fisher
@Madriveroutfitters
@Madriveroutfitters 4 жыл бұрын
The final results are very similar. This one is more of a snell to be exact. You would not use that for the backing as you don't want to be pulling 100 + yards of backing through the knot. A standard nail knot works best for that. Feel free to contact the shop if any further questions.

That's better than the welded loop anyway! The only time I actually use the welded loop is on spey and switch lines where the head attaches to the welded loop on the running line. This method doesn't work in that application because it creates a weak spot that breaks down your loop in the cast. As always another great video!

When on the river and need to apply a new leader this method is great. But if I am home and need to change a leader I take the fly line and dip the last half inch into nail polish removal. This allows for the fly line to be peeled off. You can then take the butt end of a leader and insert it into the fly line mesh. When you insert about an 8th of an inch you then put super glue on the connection. It's the best connection I have found.
