This is interesting because we have two separate kicks, a wheel kick which has a slight hooking action at the end, but we also have a turning hook kick. Your standard "stay in one place" wheel kick is somewhere in-between the 2 but the one where you close distance is more like our turning hook kick. I think that might make into my sparring repertoire when sparring is allowed again. Nice tutorial.

Another thing I see in Mikes kick ,and I may be wrong because of the angle y'all are filming at, but it looks like he needs to step to his right a bit when he is turning into the kick. In taekwondo that would be a turning heel kick or hook kick. Spinning you are stepping forward and adding forward momentum to the kick. So it's stepping forward and across then spinning. When you do it standing in place we call that a turning kick. Same concept with turning and spinning back kick and side kick also.

Tell Icy @ 09:50 he got a good one, how he had his hands and threw it. I throw this one, as a "finishing move" on an opponent trying to shake out the cobwebs. Otherwise turning your back is a good way to get a knee up your backside. Even still, my rear arm throws a leading elbow and I push my palm out at the opponent as my leg comes around. It actually helps me measure the kick too. Little detail that may help someone. When you throw that kick as fast as Someone like Wonderboy there isn't much danger of getting kneed in the back as he is moving so fast and explosive it's why he is called Wonderboy.
@nunninkav4 жыл бұрын
If you wanna try it my way, feint with your lead hand in a "hook" arc, bring your elbow up and around with your rear arm as you turn to look, extend that arm as your leg comes around.
@gronith4 жыл бұрын
I always try to throw it like I am doing a spinning back kick aiming 2 inches from the side of the head, then pull it across. I ended up with tendonitis in my hip all year when I took some bad advice throwing it like a spinning side kick. Raising the knee to the hip too soon, just like Mike. Haven't been able to train without major pain the next day since. Now I can only lift weights and run. Even doing footwork drills aggravate it to the point I can't stand hours after. Doing hook kicks in your 40's is tough and can be dangerous.

Just a thought regarding the figure skater analogy. Sure you can "spin faster" but I don't think it'd achieve optimum power. Think swinging a baseball bat. You don't spin your body keeping the bat straight up and down and then at the last minute thrust your bat straight out and follow through ... You would stick it out early and create room for the tip of the bat to accelerate. ⛸️👨🏫 Disclaimers: 0) I have no idea what im talking about and don't pretend to. Just brainstorming 1) I'm no fighter, just a big fan of your videos 🛋️🥔 2) I'm not baseball player but I've played tennis my whole life. The key I always say is to create racquet head acceleration for the fastest shot! I just used baseball because it's more relatable ⚾🎾
@SenseiSeth4 жыл бұрын
I see what you’re saying! But sometimes the added velocity is better than “raw power”. Thanks for watching and the disclaimers 😂🙏
@samw93054 жыл бұрын
So this kick seems ALOT like the flying knee. It's not getting more force out of the technique that's difficult, it's keeping your balance and not losing control each attempt. Of course swinging in a wide circle would hit harder, but it also throws you off balance and is easy to read. But yeah, this is a cool question, hopefully a pro comes along and proves both of us wrong lol. (Disclaimer I'm not a karate guy)
@Utuberj0sh4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your reply, Sensei Seth! Yea totally makes sense. And the speed helps with disguising the move to, the key I guess is Landing the kick as opposed to just doing a fancy looking spin!

In WT we call it a 180 hook kick. But we aim the push more like a sidekick just to the outside of the target. Then we snap the heel back towards the leg, following through the target. A wheel kick, on the other hand, is a 360 straight legged kick, connecting with the heel. Your leg is fully extended as with a side kick, but the power comes from hip and body rotation.

Soo do you think i'd be better off only training those disciplines? But i mean there are a toon of techniques that are kinda mma specific, for example mma jiu jitsu is widely different from regular jiu jitsu, simply because you can punch the other guy :D also, ive heard quite a few times now, that now is the time where we see fighters in the ufc who trained only mma since they were little (edmund shabazyan for example), up untill now most fighters started with boxing or wrestling or whatever and transitioned to mma later, simply because the sport is still pretty young, but as far as i can tell people seem to think that thats kind of an advantage for them? im a bit confused now, would be really cool if you could elaborate a bit further what you meant with that, thanks and stay safe :)
