Foot straps are the most valuable addition to any fixed gear, turning a goofy gimmick into a dang drift commuter! Using straps to skid also helps adjust your foot positioning! It would be great to see you revisit this topic, and shed light on an additional aspect of the fixed gear experience. I think you’ll find tons of fun with them

I was going to point this out. A lot of people tend to get a fixie without straps and tend to just dislike it, when if they swapped out the pedals or at the least get a pair of those modular straps from amazon to start with, they would get so much more enjoyment out of their fixie bike. You get a lot more control in many instances as well, compared to a multispeed road bike.

@@ValiP-q9e I understand your view on it, though I do disagree for the most part; I have both a fixed-gear and a 21-speed road bike and have used both styles for years. The original safety bicycle, back in the 1880s, were fixed gear. They took over from the penny-farthing ("ordinary") that was technically also a fixed gear bike, except without a chain as the pedals connected straight to the giant front wheel. Some early fixed gear bikes had coasting pegs, these were pegs on the fork that you could rest your feet on when going down hill, so you didn't have to pedal like crazy.

A single speed fixed gear is VERY FAR from safe. A fixie is more dangerous than a normal bike at ALL speeds. In Germany they are effectively illegal on public roads because of this.

@@tomedward8652 I am German and I know a freewheel is not mandatory on public roads in Germany. It's not required by the StVZO. And the lack of a freewheel is the definition of a fixed-gear bike. Speed on a fixed gear is slightly increased versus a geared bike with the same ratio. The efficiency of the pedal stroke on a fixed gear is a bit better than a geared bike making you put out more speed for the same amount of power (though this is only a marginal speed difference). The way I think of fixed gear riding on the road is like Alex Honnold free solo climbing El Capitan (rock climbing without ropes or harness). It is about knowing your abilities on a bike well enough that you don't need the same safety mechanisms to be safe. In fact, there is no evidence that shows riding fixed gears increases the chances of injury or death on the road. Most people riding fixed know how to ride better than roadies because they have to. It isn't for a new rider to not have brakes. Put a front brake and straps on. Get used to the bike and build the back pedal and skidding muscles that you don't normally use while riding. Then ride without using the brake for a bit, but have the brake for emergencies. Once you feel comfortable, take it off. It is an amazing riding style with a unique feeling that you don't get from any other discipline. But too many people get on a fixed gear or track bike without brakes before they are ready (and without foot retention). This causes fear, anxiety, and an unsafe ride. I do love that people give it a shot though, I just hope people do it safely and within the bound of their abilities as riders.

One big reason if not the original (friends w/bike messengers in 80's ,NYC) That messengers chose fixed gear "Track Bikes" was if someone stole your bike during your delivery you could chase the hoodlum down because they wouldn't get far before abandoning or crashing a unride-able machine & balancing at a stop is easier. Plus being strapped in w/bear trap peddles was another level of committed cool & helped stopping because you theoretically can hop the rear & lock up the tire in a emergency (I've never been successful at it in the few attempts) For me scraping or sometimes slamming the inside peddle on a tight turn was/is the deal breaker. These bikes aren't meant to lean the velodromes do that & there's not that many taxis trying to kill you in doors. We didn't have clip-ins but these bikes require the pull on the down stroke to slow down.

For the same gear ratio (and wheel rollout), a fixie is going to be very /slightly/ faster for the same power. Cause the drive-train of the fixed-gear is more efficient. In particular, there's no jockey wheels from the derailleur chain tensioner causing drag on the chain. It's really small - according to CeramicSpeed it's 0.6 W for Shimano Ultegra and 1.175 W for 105 - but with enough distance that can make a difference in competition. Which is why in time-trialling - least in the UK and Ireland, on the really flat courses - you will still find people riding with fixed/single-speed TT bikes sometimes. Maybe a bit rare these days, but it was still very common up to the 90s.

What separates a fixie and road/mtb is the momentum the wheels create when pedaling. Unlike a road bike the moment you stop pedaling you loose a bit of speed, with a fixie when you stop pedaling you still go at the same speed but loose at a lower rate. I also love how when you’re going at a fast speed you only need to put a slight force on the pedals. But they are great and better then a Walmart bike for the price tbh.

using fixie for almost 2 months now and i swear stopping is the hardest when you don't know how to skid and when you have no strap on, best to do when stopping without strap on is putting your foot on the back of the tire to stop or go slow

Main reason is I had bad breaks and fixed gave me a 3rd break, if my other breaks failed I could still rely on my legs and it saved my ass many times on the flat streets of philly

This type of bike is really good for drifting. The pedal brake system makes it easy to do

Foot retention is a must for fixed gear riding. It's borderline suicidal to not use some form. You have to have your feet connected to the pedals so you can tame the beast.
@ThaBlockisHotPodcast2 жыл бұрын
Biggest reason for riding fixed gear hover other bikes is 2 reasons. 1.)They’re fun. 2.) For a better workout. Since a fixed gear has you constantly pedaling, you can’t coast and “cheat” yourself from an intense workout like road bikes, especially on long distance rides.

messing like that with a fixie, and next thing you know you're out there doing some cool tricks and for what? for fun of course! :P pretty cool video!

In the paperboy bit I see you bent the fork and maybe the frame in the car crash bit. Mine looked like that after hitting a curb while adjusting a headlight.

@BikeHard2 жыл бұрын
I actually did an entire video talking about how I bent the forks and how I fixed them! But I'd still say that fixies are super durable in general, any bike would be damaged from riding directly head on with a car.

Fun tutorial video. You've got the best friends. 4:38 "Oh crap oh crap!" 5:32 "and stop pedaling" 'I'm not!" Your mom is the best; "Why won't it stop pedaling?" you "That's what it does; it's a fixie." "That's dumb" lmao I could not ride that bike; my fixed speed has brakes
@tigerone23532 жыл бұрын
All I ride is fixed gear... difference between "fixie" and track bike, is fixed is a generic term. Like calling a pinarello a 10-speed. And fix these can be cheap as $130. Not high-end frames or components. Where as a track bike specifically refers to its frame geometry and component package. Fixed gear or track bikes, simple economical and inexpensive to operate and just tons of fun. But if you're riding s fixedgear bike you should put some rat traps on your bike if you don't have mechanical brakes on your bike. Extremely dangerous without them
@maxsievers82512 жыл бұрын
Bicycle couriers didn't invent a type of bike. What you are referring to are track bikes which were used by couriers on the road. And not only by couriers. That's why the industry now offers track bikes with brakes or the fixtures to attach brakes.

For me the important thing to net get a fixie, is the cornering. That truly sucks you cant go fast leanining into corners
@jose63782 жыл бұрын
You can definitely stop quickly on a fixie. When I was smaller all I did was push backwards with both legs simultaneously and it would lock the back wheel completely. I don't think a child me had an astronomical amount of power in the legs so it should definitely be doable for most people.

So im south beach one day riding my bike(road bike) i see a group of guys with fixies. Hopping and skidding, and having a grand ol time. One guy yells "Hey! Nice bike ill race you!" I looked at him, then his bike, then his friends. I thought about it, -I'll leave him in the first few seconds he'll never see me again. But then i thought about safety. I used to ride fixed gear.(very briefly) just not safe in city streets. Coasting is not for just resting, its necessary for cornering, and properly handling and stopping the bike. At 35 mph you dont want to be hopping on tires less than an inch wide to stop. You need brakes. You need to freewheel. Cycling is dangerous enough. So i declined to race him, because it wasn't safe. He's like bro im a vet! I said...so am i. Be safe.

Fixie is such an ugly hipster word. Just refer to it as fixed gear..lol..but great video and info for people who have no clue about a fixed gear bike and how it works. Pedal retention is definitely key to riding fixed. Also definitely have a brake on till you get use to the idea of riding brakeless and stopping without a brake..Peoples first time on a fixed gear is so awesome their reaction is priceless and I love seeing it. Riding fixed and no brake will make you pay attention to your surroundings alot more also.

You know what's more fun than riding a fixie? My 2000 watt e-roadbike I can drop Peter Sagan on. What do I hate? I hate it when I can't hold the wheel of a guy riding a fixie when I am on my roadbike.

They weren’t created for messengers. They are track bikes which by default have a fixed gear. They became popular with messengers because much less moving parts to maintain, lightweight, slender, just all around fun to ride. But yeah if your not racing on the velodrome get a flip flop hub so you can take advantage of having a free wheel and absolutely put on a front break!!! Fixed, no brake, will just kill you if you aren’t experienced. It def won’t earn you hipster/fixie points. And do yourselves a favor and don’t say Fixie!!! If someone asks just say I ride a single speed bike. Then if they wanna know more for example say I have a Bianchi Pista, or KHS Flite, etc. then they will know it’s a track bike. I’m sure the dude who made this video just was having fun and probably new to the sport but please please please DONT SAY FIXIE!!!!!!!!!!!

As a Toronto bike messenger for 8 years let me clear some things up first off going breakless isnt “macho” or at all “hipsterish” however riding with a break totally is hipsterish…a track bike is meant to be ridden breakless and it’s how you become completely one with your track bike. It would have been much better if a person who actually knows how to ride made this video and your meant to be clipped in or have straps on your pedals and there are many combinations of ways to release tension of your back tire in order to stop on a dime no matter what speed your going or what the obstacle in your way is. Lots to learn my friend LOTS to learn.

you can skid with a fixed gear how? well you can apply downward pressure to the back pedal and apply pressure to the front pedal too. And make sure you lean to the front of the the bike and now you can skid

I don't think this is the best video to watch if you are thinking about buying a fixie... Foot retention is a must and the main reason you ride a fixie is because it looks like a regular bike but the riding sensations are super different. It is dangerous, fun and not comfortable. It is not for everyone
