Thank you metamilo this should help a lot of people. I will add that the snowballs in the elevator appear to be caused by opening the chest next to that dropper. Its mysterious behavior for sure but the link has been confirmed.

I find it really funny that you posted this today, because I did a lot of diagnosis of my system yesterday (all solved now, I think). The problem I was facing wasn't covered here so it's all OK. My Problem: I have multiple banks of slices, with paths running between them, and I didn't want hopper chains going through the hall, so I was forced to drop the item stream down under the path, and raise it back up again to go into the next bank of slices. Originally I figured that I would need a new pre-sorter every time I brought the items back up another item elevator, but it turns out that the delay that the pre-sorter introduces is preserved by the elevator. Therefore, adding a second pre-sorter did something to the tempo of items going through the system that broke it, by allowing the items from the filter chest that were matching against the stream to drain out in weird ways. They got added back into their home in the chest, but then taken out again. I took out the pre-sorters following the first one, and it works now. Also, originally I had a dropper and water stream to transport them under the path, but I took that out and just used a lot of hoppers. Don't know if that had anything to do with the issue, but I read someone suggest that water streams mess with the pre-sorter because of item grouping and so forth.

kind of similar to my problem in my pre-sorter. I uses water elevator as well for the input and the problem is right after first item come to the pre-sorter chest it begin to sort in the filter hopper below it, but when the second item come right after it and the second item is 'different' item from the first, the second item and 3rd, 4th,.. begin to come to the 'first item' filtered chest. and it broke to the very last item in the pre-sorter chest. my fix in my world is to lock the pre-sorter hopper by default and add small timer. when first item come to pre-sorter chest it start to wait about 1/2 stack to unlock the pre-sorter hopper. so the presorter filter hopper had enough item to sort inside the chest. But...... in this update i think it solve my problem as well in my presorter. THANK YOU VERY MUCH...

Even the defragmenter with the extended delay between item types still doesn't allow the multi-item sorter to work for me. I still end up having items drain out of my filter chest and then get replaced by random items.

I’m on vanilla Java but the way I was inputing items(it’s hooked up to a larger storage system with different sorting system types integrated together) gave me inconsistencies with whether the filter would go back or not. The new item processor that you showed fixed me up. Thanks again!

Awesome help guide! As someone who troubleshoots physical and software issues on networks and satellites all day, this is perfect! Give me several common issues it could be, and the common fixes and let me tinker. Perfect! That alternate defragmenter / pre-sorter / item gate was exactly what I needed to get this fixed; even though I am on a vanilla server. I don't know if it has to do with the amount of farms around me or what. But regardless, if people are having issues with filters or blockers randomly dropping, the alternate defragmenter straightened me out. Several stress runs with shulker boxes and items mixed together, and nothing has broke. Also, as was stated in some other comments, make sure you have the correct spacing as well as right y & x axis. Because of the location of where I built this, at first the item elevator was pushed one block closer and one block back from the slices. This caused the comparator from the defragmenter to interfere with the barrel on the first slice. Had to tear out some things to make sure the defragmenter and slices were lined up exactly with the correct spacing, but it works great now! Save yourself some headache in the long run, and just copy block for block. Someone with better redstone skills probably could have made it work, but not me xD

Thank you for the video! I had a couple of problems manly with the speed of items entering at difrent times and messing up the sorter chest. I fixed it with rapscallion's exact item hopper buffer

That's definitely one way to solve the issue but if I remember correctly that works at half hopper speed, so it'll slow the system down by at least that much. The long pause version of the presorter I show in this video will also fix the issue and it may be quicker overall, but I haven't compared the two so I don't really know.

@@kicvacallard4193 Also, if you leave the area or log out while it's running then there's a chance that it can still break. To prevent that you would need to make a chunk loader or stay until it's finished.

This is so awesome. I downloaded the world from RaPsCaLLioN1138's video for testing and followed both of your videos. One thing I can't quite figure out is an issue with timing when inputting items to the chest. The system works perfectly, but if items are input at an odd time, the droppers begin to click and break the filters, flushing filter items through. If you input 1 item, no issues. Input 2 items and still no issues - but, if you input 1 item, wait a short delay then input a second, this causes the droppers to start clicking. I'm going to try the alternate defragmenter to see if this slows down items enough to negate this but I'm not sure if there's another fix/workaround (I'm running a Fabric client on 1.16.4)

I did the "2 double chests storage + overflow" when I built the v4.0 and upgraded as updated versions came out. Never had a problem with it so I did some tinkering after the issue was mentioned in the video. Apparently, the order that the hoppers are placed is important, when the first one placed is towards the chest storage, before second one is placed for the overflow, it works as intended (regardless of direction). If either of the hoppers are broken, it's highly recommended to break the remaining one and replace both hoppers in the correct order. Not sure if this is the actual fix for when it doesn't work right, but it seemed to be pretty consistent when I tested it.

Not sure if this would be worth adding to a video, but I had trouble with one of my modules because I had unrelated redstone nearby and it changed the update order of the droppers. Great video, and keep up the good work! I love the system.

I am running the 4.1 version on a fabric server with carpet, lithium and phosphor. I have just started testing it and occasionally I get items dropping out of the filter chests. Most of the time everything works fine. I have tested it with many different types of items and lots of single items. I am assuming this is due to not having a long enough pause in the item gate. I tried looking for other examples but came up empty. I would like to find something in between the 3 seconds and 2 ticks or even better an adjustable one. Do you have any examples of other gates? I am going to just build the 3 second delay one for now and see if it fixes the issue.

If I could make a suggestion to make the tutorial videos easier to follow - don't use hoppers as temporary blocks. I know this is probably a pain. But if you had a dedicated temporary block you could use everytime so while following along it would be easier to tell when you were placing a necessary hopper or just temporary. This is especially confusing when a permanent hopper is going in the same spot but in a different direction than the temp one...

My system as a whole is working fine. but I am having a problem where if I put in a shulker box with items in it the shulker box goes into the chest where the items were instead of my designated shulker chest? know what the problem is? I've been trying to fix it for hours. Thanks

I don't know if this would help debunk the problem but it seems like the droppers end up tapping twice when it hits that slice (it does it to all slices)

can I put more than 2 items in each slot? I'm running into a problem where it sometimes takes out too many items and random items replace it messing up the sorting in the slice. It only happens to the first few. Would this break it? I'm on a 1.18.2 paper server

Yes, you can put more than 2 items in each slot, but it shouldn't be losing items in the first place, that indicates there is a problem. I would double check the presorter and maybe try the slightly slower version which you can find in my discord server. If that's not the problem then it could be an issue with Paper, which would be unfortunate.

@@metamilo was probably an issue with paper, i was using the slower sorter but sometimes it didnt slow down between items at all but putting 3 items in each slot seemed to have stopped the problems with it and it works almost perfectly now, with only problems being normal paper messing with redstone

I have a problem with the Practical Multi Item Sorter v4 I first got 5 modules running fine then feeding a hopper line and going into another 5 module I spent 3h searing for the problem now but all the items that are supposed to get into the second part just go into the first 2 modules of the second part. I have no idea why this is pls sent help my server runs on fabric 1.19.2

I had an issue (Paper server) with blocker items being sucked out of the chests when I put a bunch of items in the input chests and it just so happened that 2 consecutive items were meant to be sorted in the same chest. In those cases it broke every time... somehow the items didn't make it back in time to the chest with the blockers. It took a damn while to debug it, but I finally found it and I added a supremely ugly comparator clock to the item "defragmenter" making the pause between the 2 item types longer. Had no issue since :)

I had the same issue with mine on my paper server. I replaced the note blocks in the pre sorter with target blocks and that seemed to work.

That is a common problem with paper servers for some reason, and adjusting the presorter to have longer delays is indeed the recommended fix.

@metamilo thx for the great video.. the troubleshooting section helped me to get my v4 sorter back up running.. but I'm wondering what can cause a crash in first place..?! I've built an exact copy of Rapscallions system he showed in his video, but stretched it out to have a few more slices.. the only modification I made was placing down composters on the hopper lines on the corner sections to reduce lag, if they would produce some.. the sorter worked fine over multiple sorting sessions with lots of random junk boxes and suddenly broke.. any ideas how this can happen? I always make sure to run the sorter to let the sorter run when I'm in the area.. the only thing I can think of is that some slices are on chunk borders, bcs my storagebuilding has a footprint with odd numbers..

The first slice seems to fail? I have every sorting chest filled with blockers just to test for now but every item will just go in the first item chest.. I followed every step in This video but can't find a mistake.. Any ideas?

Just tested with one blocker replaced for two cobble and they got suck out into the item chest as well.. I'm super confused by now So I made the blue circuit fix but still no change.. Every item will go into the first item chest! Even if the filter chest is completely "blocked" or if I put two of a different item in there..

If I put in items slowly, it works, but if I put like a stack of sortable items and another non sortable items, it breaks. It is the wiring or does it not work in Java 1.16.5

Hi - thanks for the troubleshooting - I still have a problem however. On all slices the item from the filter chests gets pulled down into the storage chest and not shot back up... It feels as if maybe a hopper wasn't locked as it should be 🤔 but I really don't know... it also happens 100% of the time and I am running it on a singleplayer world in Java... anyone got an idea what I could've messed up?

This sounds like an issue with the fill levels of the barrels. Remember that there are two in each slice. Also, double check that you're using different items for the blockers in the chest, and the filter items in the hoppers below the chests.

@@cillicat Double check if you're using the correct comparator mode in each slice. This build (v4) should have all comparators on compare mode, however we have some updates that I haven't published on this channel yet that use subtract mode (v4.1 and v4.2). The fact that it happens every time and you're on single player java is strange and makes me think it's a build error somewhere rather than a compatibility issue. Maybe try the alternate presorter module shown at 18:40. It's mostly a fix for compatibility problems but maybe it'll help. If you are still having problems it may be easier to troubleshoot if you hop on my discord server (check description) and post a few screenshots.

@@cillicat I have the exact same problem in my server with one slice, I also get misfiring droppers so obviously something is timed wrong while I copied it exactly from the WDL where it works. The hopper under the lowest dropper doesnt get locked due to incorrect timing.

I downloaded rapscallions world and it worked perfectly fine until i updated the world to 1.17. After that none of the 1st type slices worked. I think i could fix it for myself but maybe other people may struggle with this.

Hi, my items are getting re-scrambled as they go through the sorter. So if I put in a stack of stone and one of cobble they wouldn’t go through as a separate stack of each. Any ideas on how to fix? (I’m using item gate)Thx😛

I’m running into issues with items being sorted into the wrong chest. It happens on pretty much every slice randomly. Is there any problem with using this on a Java Realm? Also I’m using a custom item elevator. Not sure if that would cause any problems either.

It should work fine on a Java Realm. If it only happens occasionally then that makes me think it might be due to items coming into the system at bad intervals. There's a weird quirk to the system that if items from adjacent slices come in with the perfect delay between them then they can break one of the slices. Usually this is never an issue if you're inputting stuff as shown in the videos, but if you're feeding the system from a farm or water stream then it is possible to hit that bad magic number and break your system. This can be solved by using the long pause version of the presorter since it guarantees that the pause between the item types doesn't hit that number.

If you're on a server it also needs the carpet mod. Otherwise I'm not sure, that should be all you need for single player.

I play on a paper survival server and when testing the first and second slices I made, they both had a problem with the chest with the blockers at the top. I found that the first item slot would be fine but the second would lose an item (so it would only have 1 instead of 2) and it would repeat this pattern so every other item slot in the filter chest would lose an item. The item would go into the actual storage chests and I can’t figure out why. I’ve triple checked everything but for all I know it could just be server lag.

If you're on paper then you need to use the alternate presorter module shown later in this video. That should fix the items falling out.

i build and rebuild this many times now but cant fix this, if i set the first filter lets say to cobble stone and put in another item in the system this item will just replace my filter items and the system puts it into the first filter. would be amazing if u could help me

Try replacing the presorter module with the alternate version shown around 18:40 If that doesn't work, make sure all your barrels have the proper fill levels and that all the comparators are set to compare mode, not subtract.

@@metamilo i am only placing in 1 block already but its still replacing the filter items. i rebuild this thing like 10 times now in creative but it still replaces the filter items every time. when i use the moduls from the world download it works but i somehow cant rebuild it. i am looking at that since like 13 hours but i cant see any difference between the ones on the test world and the ones u build. i already checked that the comperators are in the correct configuration. i also tried the older version ( the cauldron one) but that one also does the same for me. do u have any idea what i do wrong?

I don't actually know. It probably doesn't, but that's based on my limited knowledge of forge. It may be possible to get it to work with the proper settings, like it does on Paper servers, but I don't know what those settings would be exactly. Probably anything having to do with ticks or hoppers.

Great video thank you ! I've a slight issue, I'm on a vanilla server, my two first slices are working well, but for the third one, the entire content of the filter chest falls down when any item goes through the filter hopper just below that chest. It would seems that the issue is realted to something about comparator mode or signal strength from the barrel but I've check several time and I can't figure out where it's coming from.
