In this video I center a blade that is pretty far off. This resulted in the pivot coming a little bit loose. The knife is then tightened up by peening over the pivot pin and sanding / polishing the bolster.
Edit: I came up with an improvement to the process. Stay tuned for another video explaining a safer way to do this!

Thanks, Last Chance, for showing your repairs. I forget that many people these days have little/no basic tools/shop knowledge to complete this kind of work. I'm sure this will help others repair/refurbish metal knives & bolsters.

I have seen the same thing. Each new generation has less basic mechanical knowledge then the previous one.

It's a great variation. I love the warren cliff blade with it's gradual taper. It depends on what I am doing, sometimes I go for the regular trapper, sometimes this one. At work the warren cliff is where it's at!

@@LastChanceKnives I agree. You don’t see many full size trappers with the Wharncliffe blade. It’s more common in the mini trapper.

clamp bolster in a vice with leather between bolster & vice jaws to stop bolster being marked then adjust blade

If you take a look in some of my newer videos you will see that I did exactly that. As time goes by I learn and improve methods. This was my first experiment and I will put the video up if the results are good or bad.

This one taught me a few things. For one I would like to be able to adjust the centring without loosening the pivot. It would make for a lot less work. I came up with a better method and am going to test it on a Rough Rider that I have. The blade on it rubs the liner hard. It's cheap and needs to be fixed so it will make a good guinea pig. The video will go up whether success or failure!

If you watch their factory tour videos it shows baskets full of blades going into ovens. So the steel is completely treated end to end.
@LastChanceKnives
@LastChanceKnives Жыл бұрын
To do a differential heat treat the whole blade is heated but when quenched in oil part of it is either not submerged bellow the surface or is after a few seconds. I don't know how Case quenches there blades. I am only going by what I heard, which stands a good chance of being wrong! Either way it worked! As a side note 1095 steel only has a 6 or 7 second window to go from 1500 degrees to cool or it will not fully harden.

I have the same knife. The centering was OK but the cover was well proud of the bolster. I don't think Case had the A team building these. Thanks for posting.

They are hit and miss. Except for the centring mine was excellent. I have carried it for the past 2 weeks and absolutely love the warren cliff blade it has with it's slow taper. I just wish it was available in cabon steel.

I love this your a brave man I’ve been enjoying this!!!!! You have more balls than a Christmas tree!!!! Nice job once again!!!! I’ll tell ya you have taught me a lot I was just doing it all wrong I wasn’t using a ball pean hammer I never thought it made that big of a difference I should have known that and sanding the pivot is key!!!! Thanks again for these 2 videos I appreciate this😊
@LastChanceKnives
@LastChanceKnives Жыл бұрын
Even more important then the hammer type is a heavy piece of steel on the bottom of the knife. This lets you get a solid hit which should feel dead. If there is any bounce the bottom surface needs to be heavier.

Thanks! This one was a bit risky, but that was a risk I was willing to take to fix the knife. I can deal with off center but not rubbing on the liner!

Just using what was on hand. I am an IT guy so when at work like for today's video (done on lunch break), I have a limited tool set available. Much more can be done at home. Although sometimes it is better to show how to do things with less because sometimes I forget that not everyone has an extensive tool set.

This was an old video. Since then I have come up with much better ways of straightening blades that do not risk loosening the pivot. I have learned a lot from playing with slipjoints and keep trying to increase my knowledge.

You were nervous! What about me??? I put about as much pressure on that knife as was possible without it flying apart! I had an idea tonight on how to improve the process. There will be a followup video.

Traditionally this is done with a setting hammer. Quicker and does less damage.

Ok I tryed everything I tryed what you did I even put the blade on the floor and gave it all I had like 10 times I couldn’t get the blade to move at all and I had all my weight pushing that blade into the ground…… you must have the touch I couldn’t do it lol 😅
@LastChanceKnives

Or maybe I just weigh more then you! It took more pressure then I thought it would to straighten the knife out. I came up with an improvement to the process and it will be in a future video.

Very gutsy. I probably would have put the blade in a vise and nudged the handle as needed. Most likely I would have left it alone knowing I'd probably break my knife. :)

I came up with better ways of making adjustments to knives in videos since then. I learn by trying things, then analyzing and making improvements for the next time! Adjustments go much smoother now!

There are other methods of bending the blades to centering ...I can do it with my hands without any tools ...
@LastChanceKnives

I have a Queen that I was able to fix just with my hands. Unfortunately this is not the case with all knives. It depends on the steel and how the heat treat was done. When attempting to fix a blade, I start small and step things up as needed.

This is an old video and it may have been my first attempt at straightening a knife. I have learned a lot since then and do things very differently now. But I did not mess up the knife. I got it all straightened out, tightened the pivot, sanded and polished the bolsters. It's good as new and the knife has seen a lot of use and is still going strong.

Sometimes they are great, sometimes they are pretty bad! This was one of the first knives that I fixed and since then I have come up with much better methods, so don't follow what I did here. This was an experiment! When I work on something the results will be posted good or bad. Have a happy Thanksgiving!
