Fixing a cheap UHF frequency counter

I bought 2 of these through ebay a couple of years ago. They both were terribly off, adjusting the capacitor did not help. After complaining to the seller he sent me a new one which also was off. I accepted my loss and put them away in a box with other projects. But now after this movie I will spend some time to try again to make them work.

Thanks for the post - definitely worth doing this. The closest I could get was +6KHz error using the supplied trimmer. I removed the trimmer, got -40kHz error. With 15pf it was +9kHz. With 11.5pf (made from a couple of other values in series that I had to had) it is +1kHz (at 446MHz). Near enough for me. So it seems like 10pf is the fixed value you need. I might have another go if I find some other values.

It's description should say 1 MHz to 500 MHz because some buyers may think it's a 1KHz to 500 MHz counter. But it is not.

I purchased one of these from Aliexpress recently, but the unit is faulty. New 9V Battery - I get a green backlight, but no display whatsoever.

My module is only accurate above 8 MHz but its hooked up to a Yaesu FRG-7700 with a bad display. Hate to mess with the trimmer as its dead on from 8 to 30Mc.

Hello, how many db least should the power of the signal coming to the antenna be in order for the frequency counter to detect it?

I don't know if you still need this information. With just a short piece of wire connected to the counter, I can get a reading using a baofeng, no direct connection. In fact it worked one and a half metres away. Tried two extremely low powered (milliwatts) home built fm transmitters. The first one I did a direct connection. The next didn't have an antenna wire, but the counter still read it no direct connection. So it doesn't need much.

I have a question. Does this FC works with audio signals generated by function generator ? I have connect mine to a function generator and it doesn't read. I think that only reads RF signals. Can you confirm ?Thanks.

I can confirm that this device will not give correct readings below 1Mhz. It is not suitable for audio frequencies.

Whether this meter detect FM Radio frequencies (88MHz-108MHz)? I wonder which frequency this meter will show near a FM Radio. There will be 4 to 5 FM radio stations (frequencies) active at a time. Can i use this device reliably to detect RF output of low power FM transmitters?

It will show the frequency of a nearby FM transmitter. Better not to modulate it. It will not be sensitive enough to pick up FM broadcast stations.

Does it show under 1MHz, let's say 150kHz (0,150MHz)? What is the lowest frequency, does it show 100kHz?

Tantalum capacitor is way more stable to temperature changes than ceramic ones... Just a thought...

Can you get tantalum capacitors at values of a few picofarads? Not that I know of.

It was an NP0 cap he put in there. Look up what NP0 means. You should then see the folly of that comment once you do.
