@@horusdark4343 likely not even if they can do it that doesn't mean they do. Especially for devices from Microsoft they won't let you do a repair without voiding the warranty. DOD does have a dedicated office for IT. However, in my personal experience working for a state-level IT bureau, they’ll either just throw it out / surplus it, or if it’s under warranty send it to the manufacturer to have it repaired. Rarely is anything ever done outside of that except simple tasks like replacing memory from a donor computer or swapping out hard drives Just handing over a govt device to a third party individual with potentially classified or confidential information is such an inconceivably bad idea that the only possible reason I can imagine is that the device was either public/shared (like those computers you find at rest stops) and isn’t connected to the govt network, or some idiot broke his screen and was too embarrassed to tell anyone. Not sure how it is for federal government but I had to get an FBI background check, prints taken and all, and I have to do so every 5 years in order to keep my job as a tech

I work in DHS and you would probably get fired. Breaking the tablet is one thing and you’d probably be looked at like an idiot, yelled at depending on who is in charge, or made fun of because you’re friends but on top of that giving it to a repair shop so no one will find out? You better pray it’s your friend and even then you’d still get reprimanded but not fired if you’re lucky and the higher ups listen to your friend trying to back you up

@@robertct06 I mean, having decent knowledge about computers, I know all portable devices (at least where I work) are bitlockered, and have long, unique passwords, so it's extremely hard to get into them. And even then most of what you'd find is useless. But it's still a huge potential security risk, and they don't take that sort of thing lightly. I still think it'd be funny for a hacker to steal a laptop, spend ages trying to decrypt the SSD, bypass the normal windows security features, and then all they find is a shitload of effort reports, old scheduling emails, and timesheet info XD

I don't work any sort of government or other information-sensitive job but like Not only is it bad enough that there could be information on this device that was just handed over to a civilian But would it not also be an issue, the number of barcodes and serials just blatantly displayed in this video that could be used to identify this specific device? Along with the idiot who handed it over if an investigation were to be launched? That seems like another vulnerability to me besides the literal stored information.

Our NIPR computers would never go to an non-contracted entity. For example all of our computers and tablets get fixed by Dell technicians. This tablet was probably from the VA or some other agency that operates within the Army. It’s got some AGM baseline image as the regular imaged NIPR computers have a green background, not a blue one.

DoD System Admin here, the user should have brought up the equipment damage to their G6 and have an LCR done instead of bringing it to a local repair shop (great work btw) because the product is still under warranty with Microsoft and the army pays millions of dollars for these contracts. Replacing your government issued computer parts with non DISA approved items can possibly violate STIG and is most likely not legal anyways.

I've seen people with Comptia Security+ and a few years of experience get anywhere between a GS-9 to GS-11 job (obviously depending on what you specialize in and the need in your area. Example: Helpdesk, System Administration, Telecoms/VOIP etc..). Tip on opening the Surface Pro. 1: Once you lift the glass with your suction cup, pour in a drop (or less) of 100% IPA into the adhesive under. This will make the adhesive brittle and very easy to separate. 2: Use a softer prying tool. I used the foil-plastic corner part of a blister pack of pills/capsules/medicine. Rigid enough to slice through the adhesive but soft enough not to break the glass. I also pour the drop of IPA through here as I slice through so that it gets to the tight/kiss part of the adhesive.

@@Liquor_Snurf No. It almost always gets sent to the manufacturer or is wiped and thrown out. Never in my time as a state govt tech have I seen a device go to some random third party repair shop for obvious security reasons. You can’t log in to most govt devices unless you have somebody’s password, and again, for obvious reasons, this is a terrible idea. You can clearly see in the video that he is somehow logged in and you would only be able to do this if the computer was public/shared and off the domain

@@andremoire yeah but this is a smart card device (likely) and if he has the end users smart card and his pin he already in a way leaked confidential and is in a world of hurt. I hate these fragile glued on screens. We had a 20% failure rate on the Surface Pro 3 - battery, SSD, or WiFi , all of which require removing the screen. None were cracked when I started, and I heated them as much as possible without damaging the LCD or battery. They cracked anyway. I'd get close, but I suspect the small indents near the speakers and strong glue stressed the glass. The only time I've had an intact removal were when the battery got spicy and pushed it off from the inside.

It's a surface. It isn't worth repairing. So, i worked in an organization that had these and they all eventually died of the same problem. The screens would ghost super bad and it was due to thermal expansion and contraction of the GPU, and how that damages the bonding between the silicon die and the the interposer it sits on, that is soldered to the motherboard. They'd do this after about 2 - 3 years of use. Not worth anyone's time unless it's solely for data recovery imo.

Guys, there isn't any vital information on that device. It logs into servers, so it's basically the same as the rest od the devices. Most government branches don't use inside people for these jobs because they don't get repaired, usually devices get wiped and re sold back to the manufacturer to get replaced, I imagine this device is set on one account for the branch and its more cost effective to repair it rather than replace it. THE MORE YOU KNOW.

It's not weird, in fact. 🙂 People are acting like this is scam/fake info when they see undocumented information. **UnDocumented** How can you get confidential info if it's obvuously not documented? "Simple. Because it's confidential, it's not making it public, therefore you (me) can't know about this!" Nooooo. The answer is : leaked info. How do I know it's legit? Not because Intel gets publicly nervous. It's becaude of the signature and certificates that were valid at the time (and due to e-forgery of certificates , they made artificially valid certificates too.)
