Was there any clue that the RIOT chip was the cause? I would have thought that the TIA chip would be the fault.

Wow you literally did nothing but clean it. You didn't even do the basics to see if the caps were good and check the power regulator. It looks like you probably wasted a perfectly good chip by replacing it and literally replacing nothing else or checking nothing else. bravo

Very cool! Were there multiple hardware versions? We had an early 2600 with the six switches on the top, like yours. But the inside was just a small PCB with the cart slot and very few other components. Basically nothing like what was in yours. Definitely didn't have the aluminum box.

There were different versions. The Atari 2600 was actually made by different manufacturers, so opening them up can be different depending on who made it!

It works now. I realized too late that I forgot to record it working. But, you can see it working in the S-Video mod video. Same machine up and running.
