With so little grade, crowning works great but its good to install rolling dips to shed water wherever possible. We usually come back and install; ~3" of +3 crushed rock. People driving on wet native material is what starts the whole thing again. The bobcat really cleans the cut bank up nicely. Great work Andrew!

If he did absolutely need something to compact small roads/ driveways like these then he can get a weighted compactor drum for his tractor to pull around. englishstory.net/the-businessman-and-the-fisherman/ While on vacation in one of the southern isles, a wealthy businessman was taking a morning stroll along the beach after breakfast. He arrived at a pier just as a small boat was docking. Inside the vessel was a young fisherman with two freshly caught tuna fish. The businessman complimented the fisherman on the quality of the fish, asking how long it had taken him to catch them. The fisherman said, “Oh, not so long.” Then the businessman asked why didn’t he stay out longer and catch more fish, to which the fisherman replied that two fish were enough to support his family’s needs for the day. “So what do you do with the rest of your day?” The fisherman said, “Well, I sleep in, I fish a little in the morning, then eat lunch with my lovely wife, take a nice long nap in the afternoon, and then wander down into the village each evening to drink wine with my friends and have a few laughs.” The businessman shook his head and scoffed at the fisherman. He said, “Look, let me help you. You’re doing this all wrong. What you should be doing is spending more time fishing each day. Then you can sell the extra fish you catch for a profit, which you can use to buy a bigger boat. And with the proceeds from the bigger boat, you could buy several more big boats and start operating a whole fleet of fishing boats. And then instead of selling your fish to a middleman, you can open your own cannery. Then you can control the entire catch, processing, and distribution. From there you can move to New York or Hong Kong, expanding your operations around the globe.” The fisherman thought about this for a moment and then asked how long it would take. “About 20 years.” the businessman replied. “And then what?” asked the fisherman. The businessman laughed. “That’s the best part. At just the right time, you can announce an IPO, sell your stock to the public, and make millions. You’ll be rich!” “Rich, huh? And then what?” The businessman replied, “And then you can retire and move to a small village near the coast, where you can sleep in, fish a little in the morning, eat lunch with your lovely wife, take a nice long nap in the afternoon, and then go into the village to drink wine with your friends and have a few laughs.”

@dukeman75955 жыл бұрын
@@Canvideo My driveway is a bit over 1/4 mile and believe me, you need a crown and ditches on each side. Mine is hilly as well. I'm also adding gravel and fixing after heavy rains. Luckily I have some equipment, or it would cost me a fortune. The last big storm last summer washed out a 6 foot deep ditch directly in front of my low water concrete bridge, it was like a raging river all that day. I hate my driveway.
@Canvideo5 жыл бұрын
Most gravel roads do not have a rock base and layers of the right gravel topping. After winter, the ground will thaw and the roads get soft. People have a habit of driving in the rut rather than driving the high sides. When the road sets up and dries the ruts almost always break up the crown and form water channels when it rains, washing away the topping. If you have equipment, you will probably find that the less you disturb the topping, the less will wash away when it rains, so filling in the ruts with proper road gravel and packing it down works best for me.

Almost like feeling sorry for them and giving a bit more bang for the buck. I get a little queasy when you are in nascar mode and the top of the dump truck tips a good bit. I recently put new stone on my drive. It’s been here for 13 years and was down into the clay. I had potholes and muck during the winter. The truck driver started out great and was spreading fine until he lifted the bed too high and the stone came pouring over the tailgate and left about a 3’ high pile of stone for about 30’ or so. My drive is about 400 yards long. Had he not messed up one load would have been good but he ran short. I wasn’t sure there would be enough in that pile to reach the end. I got another load and started working on moving the huge pile. I’m glad though I got 2 loads. It’s about 2”deep throughout and in some spots it’s about 4”. I’m hoping it’ll pack because my wife and daughters cars get pulled side to side because they’re so small. It doesn’t affect my truck any. Thanks for sharing your job w us. You do great work. The roller is a good suggestion but compacting the subsurface (made of gravel and dirt) any way you can is the best thing for roads, then whatever you put over it will essentially conform. Maybe you could find an old one for cheap and modify the drum to pull behind the dozer.

@Canvideo6 жыл бұрын
I find that potholes are best dealt with by filling them to slightly above grade with proper road gravel. The Cat just chews up the nice compact portion of the road. Also keeping organic soil off the road helps preventing mud. Crowning a road never seems to stop ruts. Drivers like to drive in the rut rather than the high spots so the crown is usually moot on a dirt road. Same goes for potholes. They are caused by driving through them and the hydraulic action when the tires drive through them blows out the road material, so, filling them with good material ASAP is best.

well young man good to see your active. So a little advice from an old grader cat operator, you are angle dozing backwards. Angle doze the materials from the shoulder of road or ditch to middle then level. you can tilt and angle blade so the material in ditch will come up on road, then angle to center then straight blade center to fill and carry material ahead of you.good luck, ps watch come grader vids.

Looks to have built properly a long time ago, but well used. The road needed to re-crowned with Spoon drains on the lower levels . An old mate who did road machinery maintenance years ago said the best way to check how well a road is designed or maintained is to look at it after rain and see where water lays or runs .In your case its obvious, but on sealed surfaces ,not so much .

Imagine at the end of a long day,you're exhausted,hot,hungry and all that's left is to load up and head home and then you step into the hole and snap a lower leg bone.... About all the equipment and trailers I have are old(like me) but everything functions as it should and won't get me hurt. Also: keep your trailer brakes in perfect operating condition. Heck of a lot cheaper to replace than your dump truck brakes. All my trailers are set up to do the majority of the stopping;not the tow vehicle. Other than that I do hope life is treating you well.

I've found that when you get more than 3 or 4 people on a street, they just assume the other guy will maintain it, then it never gets maintained. Everyone contributes some damage to the street. The other issue is that people inherently only want to pay for "what is theirs" when it comes to distance along a road. On my street I just divide the cost up by acreage; I have twice as much as everyone else, so they each pay half of what I do and I do the maintenance.
@sanfranciscobay6 жыл бұрын
If you have 4 people who own the road, does person A who has to drive the shortest distance pay the least and person D driving the farthest distance pay the most? So if a road cost $4,000, how much would each person pay?
@AndrewCamarata6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you are right. Sometimes that nonsense makes it impossible to deal with. These people were fine to work with. And one rule I usually have when doing shared roads is that I only deal with and getting paid from one person on the road.
@eformance6 жыл бұрын
You have correctly outlined the logical conundrum. There are 2 ways to calculate the upkeep costs: 1) distance traveled 2) percentage of road frontage that you own. Since the road is an easement or at least "owned" by the people who live on it, then I think it more fair to all if everyone simply pays based on the amount of road frontage they own. This is analogous to publicly maintained assets. You pay property taxes based on the size of your property, why shouldn't the same apply to maintaining a private road?
@sanfranciscobay6 жыл бұрын
Andrew Camarata. It would be a good idea to make sure that the cost of the job is in the hands of the one person who is paying you rather than them trying to collect if after the work has been done. I have found that it is extremely important to ask very specific questions about how you are going to be paid. It's better to spend 30 minutes doing that then trying to collect it from someone who has no intention of paying.

EFormance Engineering To be fair, it should be 1. Distance traveled and 2. Amount of road owned. You need to be a mathematician to figure it out.

Andrew, from a fans point of view, it often appears that you put a lot more pressure and weight on that single axle truck of yours, than it was ever designed to take, hold or carry. But, there again, you know your equipment and I am only an observer who enjoys watching you progress with each new job towards becoming a self supporting, independently successful contractor.
