Fixing a laying worker bee colony can be an up hill battle. Last year, I released this video • Understanding / Fixing... showing how I fix them with caged virgins. In this video, I use the same approach but with a mated queen bee. Watch to see if I was successful.

I have always introduced a laying queen under an introduction cage on a frame with all ages of brood. Glad you are doing this video for the new backyard beekeepers.

I think the success of your technique is the introduction of the frame of fresh brood. Fresh brood releases pheromones that suppress the laying workers. It would be interesting to see the results if you just introduced the queen without the fresh brood.

Hello friend! I have a very similar situation and I seek your advice, I will try to keep it as short as possible. I have 7 beehives, only 1 of which is a Laying worker colony. Others are in very good condition. But the problem is that inside the Laying Worker Colony there is a queen which lays multiple eggs (drones) inside the cells. I'm thinking of getting rid of this queen and try with a new (mated) one. While ofcourse following your steps from the previous video (which was awesome and super informative!). Now, I'm thinking of getting 2 frames with fertile brood from the other 6 beehives, and 2 other frames (almost empty I guess?) like you showed in your video as a start to see if we can make things better. But the question is when should I get rid of the current queen and how long to wait before putting the new one? Thank you in advance!

What is the reason for shaking out the bees before introducing the mated queen?
@JCsBees

They need to walk into the hive and find the new setup or is will not work.

Good morning Jason, what causes a queen to lay more then one egg in a single cell?
@JCsBees
@JCsBees 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Rod, If a queen is laying multiple eggs per cell it usually means she just started laying. After a few days of practice that will change to 1 per cell.

Thanks we had a new hive queen go missing and a worker take over. We used your method after a lot of research. It's been 3 weeks and going good so far.

Could you combine that laying worker colony with a queen right colony’s?
@JCsBees
@JCsBees 5 жыл бұрын
You probably could with newspaper but you will lose one of your hive numbers by doing so. If you can get a mated queen you will not.

What actually becomes of the "Laying Worker?" Is she still a member of the colony and just have lost her ability to lay, since there now is a viable queen present?

Your videos are always informative, showing the "hands on" approach to solving beekeeping issues. This approach to solving the laying worker experience, is much more efficient than losing 50% or more of your colony by shaking them on the ground 100s of yards away. As always, great job. Thanks for sharing your wisdom.

I've never understood how the hell an unfertilized egg can hatch a bee????? I never really questioned it just accepted it as is always told but it's sure an oddity.

Hi Brent! I have always thought the same thing. I've seen lectures explaining it thoroughly, but clearly I had too much understanding of the mammalian system where there is not a viable embryo without one egg and one sperm. How honeybees do it with just an egg remains a mystery. Every time I hear a good explanation, my eyes glaze over and several red lights on the main console in my brain start flashing. When the explanation is over, my brain acknowledges receipt of the information, and somehow the eject button is pressed rather than the store it button. And there I am, still confused. Sigh. Got a fix for that one Jason? I mean, its not a laying worker but it is a worker out of control!

I’ve been dealing with laying workers this year as well. Had it happen in a failed mating nuc. Two frames of bees. Shook them out 75 yards away. They had to beg into another colony. Seemed to work just fine. That way. Its nice to know there’s multiple ways to handle this
@JCsBees
@JCsBees 5 жыл бұрын
I used to shake them out just like you did but then I got to thinking by doing it this way we lose a hive. My method seems to fix the problem completely so we can keep the hive going. Really sucks to start losing hive numbers due to laying workers but it does happen.

Jason Chrisman yea JC I agree. One thing i tried this week is....i had a weak colony. Queen didn’t have much work force. I moved her into the location of the LW colony. I dumped the LW colony out int he middle of a location where i have15 colonies. I was wanting to know if they’d kill the queen when they flew back. They did NOT and joined forces. Essentially a combine. Rest of the bees dispersed throughout the yard. One of the things I’m wondering about what you did. When you shook your bees out did you use the existing colony that they were in? If so, what do they do with all the drone eggs? Clean them out for the queen to lay?
@davemaloneyvideos
@davemaloneyvideos 5 жыл бұрын
@@decaturridgebees8761, I did the exact same thing a month ago here in mid-MD. I moved a queenright 5-frame nuc of modest strength to where the 5-frame laying worker nuc had been. Then I shook the laying workers frames off about 50 yards away. Those bees I shook that could fly came zooming back to their old location which, of course, was now a queenright colony. Did they kill the queen upon entering? No. The nuc soon was thriving due to the influx of new workers.

That's an interesting experiment. If you watch the first video I did on this which is linked in the video description, I point out that I took the frames with the laying worker eggs. I freeze them overnight then give them back to any colony.
