Thanks for the vids Tony, I had to repair a driveway that had been sunk by a heavy lorry collecting a builders skip. I have never done a repair on a block drive before but your vids explained it perfectly and the job went like clockwork.....Excellent mate

Excellent video which is just a part of your most informative web-site tutorial. The step by step instructions, accompanied by your series of videos are, without doubt, the most informative that I have found. Well done and thank you!!

Wow really good to watch. I wish I had the patience to do this sort of stuff. I'd be 15 mins into it then feel really sorry for myself, then ask the missus to get a quote on concreting the whole area.

Thank you guys! I hate that kind of jobs, specially in long curved edges because re laying the small already cut pieces sometimes is like solving a damn jigsaw puzzle.

Hi Tony, great videos and excellent detail on your website thank-you. I am wondering about the finished layer of sharp sand; I have read it needs to be finished so that the blocks are proud by some 3 - 5mm before going over with the vibrating plate. Is this the case for repairs too whereby a mallet is used instead of a plate? I was also wondering about an edging course in on this driveway; even though the blocks shouldn't go anywhere due to the adjacent tarmac would you advise it would have been good practice for there to be an edging course laid on a 6 to 1 mix? Cheers!

+Popandu Yes. The blocks need to be slightly proud then settled into the bed which accommodates any minor differences in block thickness.

Thanks tony; I wonder if you could clear up a quiery on laying 3 x 40cm sq. flags on 2 steps for a repair job laid on an existing solid and large aggregate concrete. Shoud I use an all sharp sand mix for the bedding or sharp sand mix over the existing aggregate mix and a sharp sand mix over the edging bricks of the step? I have read up on your website under the steps section. I see a picture of what looks like a full bed of mortar using a sharp sand bedding mix and over the edging bricks it looks like a soft sand mix. Could you advise on the reasoning for this rather than a full sharp sand based mix all over? Thanks in advance.

+Popandu If you are bedding the flags as treads for the steps, then yes: a Class II mortar will be fine. You *could* use a mortar based on a sharp sand, but because adhesion is more important than load-bearing capability, we tend to opt for a soft sand. If you did go with a sharp mortar, then a bond bridge would become essential - in fact, I'd use a bond bridge even with the Class II mortar.

+Tony McCormack Ah ok I see; after sending you the message I read the "bedding' section of your site and so ordered sharp sand for the reasoning mentioned under that section. I was planning to use 1 may be 2 bonding bridges as per your instructions so will try to get the order changed to a class 2 (soft sand) mortar. I will also add SBR to the mix which I understand to be 250/300 per kg of cement. I must say the volume of knowledge and understanding on the website is one of if not THE most comprehensive I have ever come across and is a credit to you for taking the time and energy to produce such a quality source of reference.

Surely the most important part is preparing the base, which materials ? How to get it level ? You missed the hardest bit !
@TonyMcCormack
@TonyMcCormack 5 жыл бұрын
I'm afraid you've missed the whole point of the video, which is the basic remedial works employed to rectify a small depression in the surface levels of a block pavement. If you wish to know about sub-base preparation, suitable aggregates, compaction techniques, covereage, etc. then you'll find more information than you ever imagined existed on the sub-base section of my website.

Tony McCormack Hi Tony, so sorry I didn’t see it was a 6 part series, just looked a the main title in big letters. You must have put a great deal of work into this so ty for that. My depression is quite big so I know it needs levelling and filling. Job in progress.

Useful video but looks like a step missing - 1.12 'blocks are placed onto prepared bed' - how do you prepare and level the bed? By the way, when cleaning the blocks try sitting on a beer crate rather than squatting, it will help to save your knees and thigh muscles from strain and wear.
@TonyMcCormack

The full procedure is covered on the accompanying webpage. This video is intended only to show the basic procedure. Every installer has their own preferred way of working. While you may prefer sitting on a beer crate, the highly experienced operative shown in this video has his own method of working, and if he's comfortable working that way, it's not for me to tell him to change.

Tony, a little bit of dry cement mixed with the sand, before brushing in, at the end moisture set the cement and sand, stops it getting washed out, just my opinion, this is not a criticism.coming from a time served Bricklayer.

Never, ever, ever use cement, or any other binder, with the jointing sand. That's not hgow flexible block paving works - you don't want a rigid joint over a flexible bed. It will just crack and the the friction between adjacent blocks is lost.

The blocks should be whacked at the end with a whacker plate. A few Taps of a rubber hammer won't tighten the blocks up.
@TonyMcCormack
@TonyMcCormack 2 жыл бұрын
...and yet they did, and 10 years later, they are still absolutely fine. Using a plate would make sense on a larger area, but on this example job, it really isn't necessary. The laying course is easily compacted by the process, and so it's simply a matter of levelling blocks and settling the jointing, both tasks well within the capabilities of a suitably-sized mallet or maul. Feel free to consult the British Standard and the relevant Interpave documents on pavement reinststement if you don't believe me.
