I am a volunteer firefighter and it looks like one of our fire trucks wiring our low bidder must have built this one also! We now include an off shore charger with auto eject plug which keeps the batteries fully charged and they now fire right up. Also "high mom" sounds like a great county to live in.....
@afleetcommand
@afleetcommand 4 жыл бұрын
I drove those for the county for 15 years, did the "hook up" one those ( pulling the plows and sander off turning back to a dump for the summer then back to a plow in the fall ) I had the Cummmins 425hp IPM's and then later Max Force 13's at 475hp and they all had 18spds. Solid old trucks. My two favorite's were a 2006 with a forward discharge box with a Cummins and then the 2016 that had the later version of the Max Force 13's after they were sorted out. THAT was a beast of a plow truck! Then I was stuck in a Western Star with a Detriot and Allison....hated it as compared to the last International with the big power and 18spd. BUT go real familiar with the plow system from pumps through to plows and plow frames. AND to the parasitic draw on the batteries......we had battery shut off's... as they always had things powered up. Other thing is rust/corrosion from salt skews everything, all the connections everywhere. most had a junction box at the rear of the truck, a round junction box. We had that set up with plugs for the lights on the salt bodies....then unplug them leaving the standard tail light. THAT box would collect moisture and corrode internally creating issues everywhere as the "pool" of water was across all things....another source of power loss. Net was we would take those trucks when they came in from Stadium International and pull EVERY connector and pack them with dialectic grease. Every one before the truck saw salt. My hunch is on your truck if you pull some of those connectors you will see the tell tale green and that will cause intermittent issues. Also the starter solenoid. Of course that's assuming that truck saw salt use. We could get a "clue" plugging into the lap top and chasing error codes...never pointed to the exact area but the class of connectors around what systems were corroded. One of the last ones was the "DEF" sensor on the tank.....got corroded and failed at 1:00 at night 20 miles from the shop on a snow and blow night.....shut that truck down! Red light. While killing time waiting for assistance broke the lead accidentally when pulling out scraper I had stuck behind the fuel tank.. by chance...and by did a red neck reconnect did another battery shut off and restart attempt and the truck fired right off. Got me home. Found it had corroded along with a few others we had missed with the grease. The other common issue with the later ones is salt would pack in that small radiator they had in the egr system under the main radiator. Wouldn't do its job and the truck would start throwing egr codes and going into limp mode. Drove every one crazy until we figured that one out.

You have a good work ethic, hope the township realizes that. When they go for lowest bidder it is often the sloppiest bidder too. They should bring their cables to a clean connection point that can be used to isolate equipment for trouble shooting. Glad I was able to reject installed equipment that was not neat and clean along with properly installed. The steering has to be as shaky as the nuts where mean. Nice touch on the Hi Mom and keeping the township name private, I am glad you respect your customers. I hope you get to much work so you can choose what you really want to do, some days beating a part out is therapeutic.

I ran across a great tip for locating parasitic draw without pulling fuses, or going through multiple resets. You measure the voltage drop across the fuse, and a chart (using the resistance of that fuse) will tell you the current passing through the fuse. On modern vehicles, sharp probes can reach both sides of the fuse through the case. Let me know if you can't find a chart, or this doesn't make sense.
@larstottonful
@larstottonful 4 жыл бұрын
I've found you can even measure the voltage drop on wires feeding the fuse boxes. Easy way to narrow down where the active circuit is.

South Main Auto uses a infrared heat camera module for (Flir?!) to visualise where the parasitic draw is happening. You can actually see which of the modules is 'hot' by looking at it through the camera. Very handy, cause otherwise you'll have to chase fuses and isolate circuits. Worth investing in that :)

Wes, Does this engine have a similar High Pressure Oil Pump setup as the Powerstroke? If so they have been known to slowly allow the oil reservoir in the HPOP to drain out over time when not in use. When cranked there is no HP Oil for the HEUI injectors, eventually oil re-fills the HPOP reservoir, but now there is air in the HP lines that has to bleed out. Usually all of this takes enough cranking to discharge the batteries to a point the Injector Driver module turns off due to low voltage.

I welded for over 35 years and if you burn yourself apply heat to the burn just to feel the heat from a lighter flame for a few seconds and it won't blister or hurt or short time later, but in time you will have new skin under that burn. What you are doing is stopping the nerve endings from sending the message to your brain that you burned yourself done this many times

Awesome welding job man, as for the "intermittent no start" issue, if that kill switch is old enough to be frozen up then its old enough to have pitted contacts, which notoriously fail during frigid weather. Tell them the next time it refuses to start to check the voltage passing through that switch 1st thing.

U.K. Just found your channel - Subscribed. Not sure exactly why but you show good and bad and that's what life is. I have found the worst lot for looking after anything mechanical is farmers. The worst was a large scrub cutter towed by a tractor. It had 3 x 30 inch square blades with hardened cutters on the corners. They went round so fast they howled. The blades were thin aluminium sheet and one was cracked right round 6 of the 8 bolts holding it onto the hub. It was used on a campsite and I had visions of the most deadly frisbee on the planet carving through tents, caravans and people. Made some new ones up out of 16 gauge steel and painted them. Be OK till the rust bug gets at them. Take your feet off at the ankles.

The 466 and 433 use a HEUI system and on these engines there is an oil reservoir towards the front center top of the engine. On the bottom is a check valve that can sometimes stick open causing it to drain out. Shows as an extended crank or no start. Next time it does not start have them call you. On the top of the reservoir is a cap with an allen bolt i think. See if the reservoir is empty. If so refill it with oil and see if it starts. If so just replace the check valve. The is a common issue with the 7.3s.

@glennchartrand5411
@glennchartrand5411 4 жыл бұрын
We have a roll back with a 466E that wouldn't always start because a bad O ring on an injector was letting lube oil leak by, so the engine struggled during cranking to build up enough pressure to open the injectors. So it wouldn't start on a low battery or if the engine oil was hot. Eventually it got worse , which is when it became "diagnosable". So watch the oil pressure during crank, if it's marginal it can cause random no starts.

If you want to mitigate that burn (I know this is years after the fact) there is only one thing you need and that is simply an Aloe plant you can keep in your house. Break a piece off and smear that gel all over it and then let it air dry. Bandage it loosely and put more Aloe "Juice" on that burn about 4 times a day for 2 days or until it feels comfortable. When it is all said and done you won't know it even happened after a week. The burned skin will not dry out and be uncomfortable as it would be normally. Ask me how I know.

It's real easy to find a parasitic draw on a truck like that. Turn off the key. Pull all the fuses. Put an amp meter on the positive cable. Put the fuses in one by one. When the current jumps up you now know which circuit to look at. With an assistant watching the ammeter, start wiggling wires on the circuit involved. That will find a short. Also look for switches that aren't turning off. Doesn't take that long.

A thermal camera will help you find parasitic draws what ever is drawing will be warmer than the rest especially in the winter months. Something to think about.

Not sure if the dt466 is setup like the power stroke with the hp oil lines. I remember getting air in those lines and it being a bear to start(it definitely had some oil leaks)

They should just call you when they have the problem. Easier to just wait until it happens, or add a timer with a battery disconnect. If there are 45 minutes no cabin light, it just disconnects the batteries. If you want to start it, they have to reset it :) I bet it's just salt and water on some connections increasing the current draw overnight, while the snow is thawing.

Couple of common problems with those,cam sensor and won't throw a code,the plug on the icp regulator goes to hell,on the front of the timing cover above the compressor there's a bolt you take out and that's the reservoir for the huei pump,if oil comes out your good,if it doesn't the huei pump is bad,injector o-rings could be bad,if you have oil in the fuel there bad.check valve in the fuel pump,dirty screen on the bottom of the fuel filter housing,I would scan it first just to see what's going on

Also if you codes for all 6 injectors high to low side open that usually means the idm is junk

I had battery issues with my Yukon coming from the AC. I put a 3 amp float charger on it and leave the charger plugged in no further issues and these chargers will not overcharge the batteries. A fifty dollar fix.

When you hit it, it is a solid piece with the tapered joint and arm as one, so the taper doesn't deform permanently. I guarantee it didn't get past the plastic deformation state.

Nice fixes! Scotty Kilmer checks amperage with a current clamp, so you don't have to interrupt and sleep/wake circuits, isn't that a good idea?

Wes, Not finished watching yet, but... Is there a GPS and a tracker unit plus a control unit installed? What about a road surface temperature probe? I have come across the same issues (power wise) that you have. It’s common in Europe to have some extremely sophisticated equipment. Unfortunately it is often installed by who ever wins the bid. You end up with a really expensive gritter that is then modified by four different companies. This makes a reliable, if expensive, gritter, inoperative (U/S).
