If you need to clean corrosion or rust from polished parts, try bronze wool. It will not scratch steel or chrome etc. Learned about using it on the chromed parts of a motorcycle I restored a few years ago. Found it to work equally well as steel wool but without the risk of scratching or dulling parts.

It might be a good idea to weld a protective 1” ring around the zerk fitting to give some protection against being damaged by rocks, etc. Just offering an idea.

I weld a large 7/8" nut or 1" nut over them give them some protection!

On those it’s kinda hard since they are usually cast. Couple times I’ve had to do a job just like that I used a secondary 1/4” plate with a piece of pipe welded to it. That goes on over the cast plate and the grease zirc. Kinda like a big washer. Also means it’s removable to be installed on the next roller. I also never leave them as oil bathed. Always adding grease zircs to top rollers and the like.

I think it's the feeling of accomplishment. Problem, problem identified, repaired, works just like designed. Somehow this sequence of events trigger something in the male brain. No matter if you have your hands deep into a hydraulic pump daily, or have never seen the inside of a contruction machine cab. :)

Some hints: - localizing the root cause of a problem exactly - cleaning away the dirty work of time and the environment - lubricating hard surfaces working together smoothly - repair something to extend it's life-time with a few, cheap things and some enjoyable work - enjoy the glory of the clear success knowing it will last for a long time And I guess all of these are symbolic acts to other parts of human life as well. We humans are very feedback needed/based creatures. What we see and do is building up our state of mind which is our 1st level of existence. We are happy if we see that the world around us is a good place and/or if we feel that we are capable to make it better.

I started watching this type of stuff a while ago and it really helps you wrap your head around more abstract solutions to things. like who would think "oh, just tap a grease fitting on it" that type of problem solving can shift over into all sorts of different areas.

Nice one Marty. Can't beat being able to grease where it's needed. One thing that pained me with some heavy equipment, were the so-called 'sealed for life' track rollers, because their life expectancy was always way less than it was supposed to be. Manual greasing beats them hands down.

they say the squeaky wheel get's the grease, or track roller as it were. it's a good thing too. i don't know about you, but that screech would've driven me bonkers, not to mention i wouldn't want to have replace a track on that thing. sounds like lots of unnecessary hard work, and wasted money for want of bit of preventative maintenance time and a little lubrication. fixing the problem when it starts, rather than when it quits, is what people with more sense than dollars does, and we all know you have an abundance of common sense, unlike the majority of humanity it seems. i get too many jobs that would've been a cheap and easy fix like this was, but instead they just kept using it until it died, then brought it in to me to repair at triple the time and expense. i guess i can't complain too much, it keeps the lights on, and the wolf from my door.

Next time you have the welder out, take a 1/2” pipe nipple 1 1/2” long and cut it in half. Weld each piece to the roller cover around the grease fitting. Now put a pipe cap on there. You’ll keep rocks and debris from dinging up your grease fitting and making it unusable AND your grease zerk will always be as clean as new. 🤙

Most of these vehicles are owned by the efarmer and depreciation is claimed as a tax refund each year. So after a few years the machines are basically worthless 'on the books" So the farmer buys a new one...and just lets the old one sit "just in case".

With the shed I've heard its better to put the shed up first then the slab inside it. That way it makes it more water proof.

It's interesting that over hundreds of years in hundreds of industries, nobody has come up with a replacement for the very necessary pile of dunnage. We have so much high-tech equipment that can achieve what our predecessors could only dream of, but at the end of the day when you have to move something heavy, stacking wood blocks is still the same operation that the Egyptians probably used.
