In terms of contacting the seller after the fix, I think the fact that it wasn't a private seller, rather a wholesaler, so honestly, they probably wouldn't care if it was an easy fix. Them being a wholesaler they probably bought the rig for like $150 so they still probably made a profit.

I'd still try a different cmos battery before I pitched that board. Bought a 1 year old aurora r9 a couple of years ago for super cheap because it was having the most random no power/no boot issues. Bad 2032 battery.

The seller probably tried to wipe the bios and disconnected the cable for that, I would assume.

@@EhEhEhEINSTEIN I can't really argue on that because in this world literally anything can happen lol. So yeah I'd probably try a another battery for the sake of it. But you don't actually need a CMOS battery working or connected to be able to boot and run a PC, The battery's only job is to power the non-volatile CMOS memory chip to keep any programmed BIOS settings and run the system real time clock, All that will happen without it is any changed settings won't keep and the clock will stop, It will just boot on default every time.

I bought a broken Asus ROG Strix B550-I myself not too long ago, thankfully the warranty had not been registered and ASUS honors warranty based upon original manufacture date, not original purchaser! You have a good shot at RMA’ing it

If the mainboard has a BIOS rescue mode, like updating the bios without turning the PC on, via a dedicated usb slot, maybe try that? Or, more elaborate, you could try to flash the BIOS with an external programmer. Or change the BIOS chip ^-^; Maybe not reasonable.

@@forcem6587Nope. on my MSI x570 board you just have to put a USB stick into a certain port while the board is off, press a button next to it for a couple of seconds and there's a seperate process not related to the board being on or booted into the BIOS which tries to recover the BIOS from a file called MSI.ROM which is the latest or whatever BIOS you renamed. No booting needed :D

It could be that the bios was bricked during an update. That board appears to support bios flashback, It wouldn’t hurt to give it a try

All boards i have ever had will power on if they have corrupted or non-existing bios. I suspect the issue is more in lines of power button signal or power not getting to SuperIO chip that handles power buttons and example post leds, something shorted in the board that pulls all signals to oblivion of ground plane.

Hey Greg, love the videos. Have you tried to use the asus bios flash back? Almost all recent asus boards have it and all you need is power to the board and a usb in a specific port on the back and it can recover from a bad flash or corrupt image. "ASUS EZ DIY -BIOS Flashback™ button -BIOS FlashBack™ LED"

I would do this and possibly try a CH341A BIOS flasher if RMA is unsuccessful.

Hi Greg, I had a similar issue with an MSI B550 board. Battery voltage was 2.7V and the system won't power on. With a new battery it worked perfectly fine again.

Previous owner had trouble with it powering on so they probably pulled that CMOS battery cable out of the motherboard to try & clear it just like why the CPU cooler was loose to check for bent pins or debris. Then they gave up & put it on Ebay to cut their losses. Nehoo ya that was a good pickup Greg. You quite possibly turned a fix or flop into a future flip. Congrats on this little gem of a find & thanks for sharing. :)

Hi Greg, have you checked the battery voltage to see if the actual CMOS 2032 battery is ok? I once had a PC that wouldn't turn on with the CMOS battery connected and it wasn't until I replaced the battery with a new one that would fix the issue. Great video as always!

warranty is from sale date on the reciept, so id used to dummy up a receipt and RMA them back. the best result was M$ dated my surfaseRT from when I REGISTERED it, the day before I RMA it and they must have wharehouses full of these old things as they sent me with in a week a new one and the old one was 10 years old!

Is it possible that one of the owners disconnected the CMOS battery in an attempt to reset the BIOS config? If it's assumed they were disconnecting the power switch cables in an attempt to troubleshoot, it seems reasonable they would reset the CMOS battery. Although it doesn't make sense why they wouldn't reconnect the CMOS battery before giving up on it. Unless they tried another CMOS battery?

A half of story can be matched with this. I recently got a MSI board on sale I received the original box of the board and noticed that the box was totally pushed inside. The top side as well. Inner antistatic bag was highly scratched against VRAM heatsink and was torn from some places as well. The board look (merely) slightly bent but nothing i could see damaged visually. But ignored and forgot to test this even after 15-17 days as i was busy with my work from office which kept me away from PC for most of the time. When i realised i didn't test this; i did it immediately after around 20 days and... It didn't wanted to post after a micro second fan spin. It just kept dying that. Sometime that and sometime nothing at all. All parts are still working fine in my previous/current one board which i own for about one and half year. So i tried to RMA it. It came back as it is. I called the MSI service person directly who called me to ask the issue so this was a relief for me that i had a number of a member from MSI. He helped me on video call. BTW i know what i am doing also but decided to listen to him as he had much more experience than me. So after putting everything one by one but only one RAM stick; the board boots. Put in second stick the board boots now. Switch off the power supply and turn it on again... nothing; it doesn't boot now. So he asks me to disconnect the 24-pin and re-insert. Do that and now it turns on. All this were tested on open barebone environment on a motherboard box. So nothing should be sorting here. It kept on doing the same. The service person tells me the board is fine and your CPU/RAM stick might be causing the short to board and declines to send a replacement as it was working while we had video call despite seeing it refusing to turn on second time. Fed up troubleshooting this and gave up. I remembered every video i saw of @GregSalazar but couldn't find any fix that i could do. I tried everything that could have worked already. Of course it needed to be RMA'ed. But MSI declined it and i had to sell to a reseller by getting a much lower value than i paid for it and call it a day.

I have on a few occasions gotten very lucky with different companies RMA process. Often times only a small charge is applied if it's out of warranty, other times they just send a brand new one or equivalent , it never hurts to try. Great video and great score with that 3070 working.

Been there and done that. Sometimes it's totally worth it to roll the dice. Recently got an Asrock X570 phantom gaming 4 motherboard for 25 dollars including shipping on Ebay and it works aside from missing the cooling fan on the southbridge heat sink. Cut the frame off a 40mm fan and used 2 sided tape to stick the fan on and it fit perfectly. It has a new home in my htpc atm.

have you checked cmos voltage? or replaced for a new one? just peel the black plastic on the original cmos, pull the terminal (spot welded on the cmos), replace a new cmos, just tape the cmos touching its respective terminal.

Hey i had this same problem with my b450m gigabyte motherboard. Mine is now working again.The fix is really simple ,you just have to give the motherboard a cpr shock.Just force your psu to on mode by bridging the on pin on the psu.The cause for my board not working was that one of the phase of vrm died.Happy to help😊

You could most likely RMA that motherboard. I did just do that last week. Got a motherboard, did not work, I knew that, I did however load the bios flash, just dead after that. Put in an RMA ticket with MSI and was supposed to get it back today, but you know less than one snow flock and all deliveries are stopped. Hoping for tomorrow. See I paid nothing for the board, paid 25 for RMA (I had to pay to send it in, fair enough). Board is repaired, I think they just stuffed a new board in the box or it is a common issue.

Hello, I have the same MB, I got it without the support for 5000 series and it had the same behavior as far as I remember , try putting the 5600x back and update the bios with an usb, I think it might work.( just so you know for the bios upgrade it needs a cpu installed even if it says it doesnt in their online manual.) Good job on the fix by removing part by part and testing on every swap. Just a quick tip - the CMOS battery probably was disconnected by the previous guy or technician because by being removed it bypasses the power on pins at all. I have used this trick before , you can even keep the front panel connected to the pins and remove CMOS battery and will see that the PC will power on when PSU is switched ON. Never seen a PC that REQUIRES the CMOS to be plugged in or inserted to it's socket for it to at least POST. But you never know when you will be surprised, anyway great fix and video. At least you have some spare parts for upcoming Fix or Flop videos :) Keep up the good work !

great video as always. It could also have be a bios problem. There may be a way to sideload it offline or maybe you could remove it from the mb and place it into one of bios readers and upload a new bios onto the chip. If you own one that is. It is strange that you do have power on the board though. I would suggest asking the seller if a bios update was performed recently. Perhaps it ended up corrupting the bios chip

I had a client with the same issue. First had me thinking it was the CPU because it'd power on when it was removed, but it worked with other motherboards. Tried a separate working CPU and same thing. Had to get them a replacement motherboard. Always fun seeing issues I have some clients having show up here lol

To be sure if it's a VRM short issue you can try just connecting the 24 pin only (don't connect CPU power) and turn it on. If the CPU fan spins then there's a short in the VRM section otherwise VRM section is not the only problem.

Just wanted to say thanks for this series. By following your process I managed to fix my sons PC. No signal, but PC turned on. Swapped out GPU with no change. Ended up just clearing CMOS which meant I ended up with 1 of 2 monitors coming on to find that he had AVG accidentally downloaded which was causing issues and wouldnt stop opening. I think it was a dodgy non authentic AVG. Eventually managed to uninstall it, restarted and both monitors up and running. PC back to normal. Its so easy to think its a hardware problem but if you follow the process it does the job. Thanks again.

You would have to do an off board reprogramming of the BIOS chip in a programmer where you solder it to a daughter board. This because the motherboard is essentially dead.

this was interesting. It made me wonder how many dead mobos ive had actually had a cmos battery issue. i cant recall more than once finding a dead battery on a board, even after sitting for years. i wonder if a dead battery would be enough to cause a power on fail? really good video!

Have you checked the actual battery voltage? My strix b450itx has a similar battery and wouldn't boot at 2.7V Works great after replacing the battery
