I realize this is an old video of y’all’s but it has been so helpful! I somehow stumbled upon one of these beauties in its singer cabinet (all for $20! Amazing!) at my local thrift store. It needs new wiring and I’ve spent the day googling and watching all the videos available on restorations of this specific model. Y’all’s is the first one I’ve found where I can see the motor taken apart for rewiring. So, so helpful.

This is awesome, thank you so much for making this video. Earlier today, I dug out a 1923 Singer sewing machine my grandmother had in a storage building. This video will help so much to clean it up.

I have had one of these 15-91's I bought in 1971 for $10!. I created many beautiful items with this reliable straight stitch that can plow through just about any fabric and not break a sweat or a needle! I even used it to do upholstery back in the 70's. It still works beautifully and I am using it to teach my girls to sew so they can teach their children. We are in the process of purchasing two more of this model for my daughters. These are built so well and obviously made to last. It was amazing to see you take this one apart to clean and restore! Beautiful video. Thank you so much!

I have a nearly identical machine, but she is just a bit younger from 1948 this is super helpful for cleaning, I have had the machine serviced and minor repairs made when I first bought it from an auction house but I would love to be able to service and repair it myself if possible, so this video is giving me a great start.

When I cleaned out my grandmother’s 201 I think I scooped out about 1/4 cup of old grease from the little grease ports and around the worm gear and housing. It was quite gross but very satisfying to get her all clean.

Thank you so much for this video! Even the music is calming for those of us a bit anxious of this endeavor. I'm about to service the motor on my Great Aunts 201-2, so this with Rain's blog will be wonderful. I've also got a 15-88 in perfect working order whose Japaning has disintegrated and desperately needs painting, so this will be very helpful for that project also. Again, great video and thank you!

Very professionally done video skills. Quite enjoyable to watch. I was sooooo glad to see you use SewRetro grease for the motor. So many DIYers just use a generic or synthetic grease which will ruin the motor. Rain's blog post is the bible for potted motors, glad you got the info out there about that too. Thank you for producing this, it will inspire more people to rescue these fabulous old machines. They are a joy to use, and hands down so much better than the plastic ones being made today.

I have a similar machine which has run with purely synthetic oil and grease since I restored it in 1997. However, I'm an electrician, and I read the service manual, so I knew how to do it right. You're very much correct about the danger of ruining the motor through incorrect lubrication. I've heard of people greasing the carbon brushes! I have never seen any machine (except my 401A which is as good but not better) lay down such perfect straight stitches in difficult materials. And nothing handles abrupt thickness changes as well as this machine. It's perfection. It makes me sad to think of what Singer once was and the trash they produce today.

it says in the original owners manual to apply Kerosene to the oiling points if the machine runs slowly after being stored for some time, then run the machine at high speed, wipe clean and reapply lubricating oil.... i also use kerosene to clean the chain and sprockets on my motorcycle because it works great for cutting greasy nasty grime and doesnt hurt most paint and finishes and the O-rings in the chain and such...

@wisebeyondourshears2167
@wisebeyondourshears2167 3 жыл бұрын
The first place I would look is at the end of the wheel. There should be a silver disk, that is the clutch, and it might need to be engaged by turning the disk while holding the wheel in place. If that doesn't work you might need to slowly start looking at each piece to see if anything is rusted or bound up somehow. Hopefully that helps! - Brian

@wisebeyondourshears2167
@wisebeyondourshears2167 3 жыл бұрын
Hmmm that's odd... Do you have the tiny gasket that was behind that screw? If not you might not have enough friction to hold it in place. You could probably make one out of a rubber band. The only other thing I can think of is if the screw is stripped it might not hold it in place properly. Hope that helps and good luck! - Brian

Yes you can I'm fixing one right now a 15-91. after you take front cover off there is a small screw that if you loosen it you should be able to drop the whole metal rod that hold the leg. (Grease could make this a challenge I used a small blow torch to heat up the frozen grease. Good luck. Time stamp for example: 2:49

yes, that is exactly how you adjust the feed dog mechanism. If you download the pdf of the singer 15-91 manual it is also illustrated on pg 33 of the document (pg 35 of the pdf). There is an illustration on the page that points out exactly where the screw to adjust the feed dog height is.

Once you figure out what model you have you can normally find a PDF of the original manual on Singer's website. If you can't find it there you will probably be able to find a PDF on Google or even a physical copy on Esty. I think the easiest way to identify if the machine is right or left is to look at the main body. On this model, the stitch length/reverse lever should face towards you. If it does not the fabric will feed the wrong direction. Hopefully, that answers your question Thanks -Brian

I have this exact Machine- checked the serial number and its a 1933. The sewing machine shop rewired my 3 prong plug with modern wire and after that it blows the light bulb every time I put a new one in. I there something different with the electric cord- does it need a specific type cord to accomedate the wiring for the 3 prong set up. Seems like something is mssing in this equation. i just ordered a replacement cord from the sewing machine part place- hope that takes care of the problem. i'm looking for an explanation of how this whole 3 prong set up works.

Hmm.... This is starting to get out of my field of knowledge. I am not sure why the bulb would blow out. The new cord might help but there is no specific find you require so long as the wire gauge is enough for the electrical load. You might want to double check and make sure it's wired properly on the back. You can find a diagram on Google showing how to wire it up. Hopefully that helps good luck!

You didn't tie a stop knot in the motor wire when you pulled it through the grommet. That is a good trick to use to prevent the wire from tugging on the coils.

Lol ya I realized that after I turned the camera off and just forgot to record tying that stop knot. But don't worry it's in there!

I would like to know to take the light fixture apart. Even with oil I cant get the set screws loose in the worm gear. And dont know how to rewire. Looks like someone spiced and put new ends on...plugs but I dont know how to do new. I know how to use a soldering tool as I do stained glass but not sure how to do this.

To get the set screws out you need a screwdriver head that fits perfectly. There are some you can buy and in the description there should be a link to a blog the explains the whole process of serving and repairing the motor.

Where do you buy the wires to rewire the singer 15

I honestly bought an old power cord from a thrift store to re wire the motor and light. And I got a new foot peddle from Singer's website.

I NEED HELP! PLEASE HELP ME! I have been using a Singer sewing machine for more than 30 years. This month the foot pedal (controller) stopped working. As parts are not available for that old model, so the foot pedal can’t be fixed. Then I bought a new foot pedal. Now I am getting different opinions. One of them is that this new pedal and motor can’t work together , and if I try it will damage either new pedal or motor. So now I am trying to find a good motor for this new pedal. PLEASE HELP ME! My question is: What things I should see in a motor so it works properly with the NEW Foot Pedal (Controller)? Old Motor 230-250 volts input 90W 50/60Hz Old Foot Pedal (Controller) volts 150~250 input 80W 50/60Hz NEW Foot Pedal (Controller) 100V 120W Here Electricity Standards are: Voltage (volts) 230 V Frequency (hertz) 50 Hz Thanks a lot for your time

So for this what your most concerned with is making sure the voltage ratings are all the same. If you have 230V from the outlet and the pedal is only rated for 110-120V (normal USA voltage) than the pedal will likely burn out. I think you would be better off trying to find a pedal rated for your countries standards than finding a new motor. You may be able to find an old pedal on a place like Ebay. Hope that helps.

I am not a sewing machine restorer but I would not venture to take all of this apart. You must have wide experience where all the parts go, buy a novice will have a box of screws. I would try to clean, wd40, and oil moving parts to the point that the machine is usable. Then, as time passes, try to service different small systems and get them back together correctly. It is ridiculous to take the whole thing apart.
