Fixing a Yamaha Moto 4

Picked up this Moto 4 from a recent haul. Never had one before. Lets fix it!

First clue something was bad wrong with the shifting mechanism is the gear pattern on that machine is neutral at the very bottom with gears 1 thru 5 reached by pulling UP on the shifter, not pressing down. The broken part was making the machine work something like a rotary shifter would. Glad you got it fixed.

The Moto 4 started coming in 4x4 in 1986 I have a late 90s model with 4x4 as well not sure who told you this fun fact but it’s not true.

when you replaced the segment that was broken, there was the one long dowel pin and 4 other dowel pins but 5 spots. was there a specific spot where the dowel pin does NOT go? @@cimotorsports-atv

Thanks for your video! I just picked up a moto4 for $100. Same issue. This shift drum broke in the same spot.

I think I just bought that quad, it has an identical crack on the side with the exact same stitching and missing all the same stuff.

once you found the bad shift drum, you said it would be an easy fix. I've got one that won't shift it all, although I had it running and it started to chug ahead a little. What did you do exactly to fix it once you had the clutches out of it?

I just bought a Moto 4 225 (likely 86 or 87?) and am stuck in low range. I don't have the shift lever handle but there is a lever that moves. Any tips on where to start with it? Or a place to message and maybe send a few pics?

Mine did the same thing with the no power to anything there is a wire that comes off of the battery see if it is in one piece

Yep the red wire came unplugged. Good to go now

Just picked one of these uo over the weekend. Good compression, timing is correct, I just redid the valve timing. Strong blue spark but it won’t start, cleaned the carb, and have even tried starting fluid and gas directly into the cylinder. Any thoughts?

I have a moto 4 just like this one except it's tan in color. It recently started jumping out of gear when under a load and when shifting from low to reverse. Is there some type of adjustment I can do or does it sound like there's something more serious going on? Any suggestions? Thanks!

Same man when I’m in 5th gear it jumps down into 4th every now and then but goes back in just fine.

I have a moto 4 and it will not start while it's in gear but it will crank

Pretty sure they have a neutral safety switch thats not supposed to let it start in gear. Probably cuts the spark

I dont think it woukd be too difficult but you will probably need a flywheel puller tool set to get to it
