There is a reason why engineers generally use 55°C as the ambient temperature for validation. It isn't that uncommon to reach 45°C in the shade summer and that's in the cooler southern states. And you have to consider the air being heated by the device itself, direct sunlight etc.

You think that's bad come to S. Carolina USA, where it can be 115f aka 47C with 95% humidity making it feel like well over 120f aka 49C that if you are outside longer than 5 minutes will take your breath away, give you heatstroke, and a major sunburn without sunscreen, and then don't forget about the mosquitoes that can carry all kinds of nasty stuff. so when I'm outside in the summer doing yard work I'm covered in sunscreen, bug spray, wearing a brimmed hat, and a cool rag around my neck along with taking breaks every 20 minutes or so for water like crazy, as our grass can grow as high as your knees in just a couple of weeks with all the pop up thunderstorms we get as well. Far as A/C from about March/April to around late as Oct. we have the A/C going in my house along with most if not all the ceiling fans, and even various floor fans to keep it cool even with blackout curtains.

0:20 Tehcnically it's "passively convecting heat away", not "passively radiating heat away". It is true that a tiny amount of heat is lost due to radiation, i.e. the surface of the macbook does reject some amount of heat as photons (this is what IR cameras pick up on to sense temperature), but the vast majority of heat rejected is due to passive convection, not radiation. And before someone tries to argue this, I will also point out that "radiators" as most people know them are actually water-to-air heat exchangers, which chiefly utilize forced (or passive if there are no fans) convection. So calling them "radiators" is actually a very poor name. Just look at the fourth sentence in the wikipedia entry for Radiator: "Despite the name, most radiators transfer the bulk of their heat via convection instead of thermal radiation." Yes I am an engineer and I am great at parties. Jk don't be silly I don't go to parties.

The heat problem in the case or the battery problem can be solved by placing the MacBook Air on an aluminium disc about 4-5 mm thick and about 200 mm in diameter. The heat is then transferred to the desk via the rear casing, which heats up considerably, via the aluminium round plate that lies directly against the casing. This worked particularly well for me as my desk has a glass top and this absorbs the heat well. Wood alone may not be so good. In my case, the centre of the disc is roughly where the CPU is. This means that the disc protrudes slightly beyond the Macbook Air.

@@frankwong9486 would it be better if you (might) use the less efficient thermal pad mod (the cheapest one)? Or just simply not applying any thermal pad mods and using an external laptop fan cooler instead?

I think there are many things that they did not take into account, such as dissipating the heat through the chassis, causing other components that are sensitive to heat to heat up, such as the battery.

Just FYI... That standard was replaced quite a long time ago with IEC 62368-1. Additionally, those standards only apply to the EU. Safety test is not mandatory in the US or Canada. The market requirements normally dictate that products be UL marked, which is basically the same testing though. Again.. that is fully optional.

Put it on top of a portable laptop stand with built in fans to cool the back of the laptop, then it'll be a real cool heat sink.

Okay but you could improve this by just using a less efficient thermal pad, that way it allows the chassis to act as a heat sink without getting too hot

There are a couple of discussion groups over on MacRumors detailing specifically this mod which followed on from the same mod on the Macbook Air 2020 with Intel processor. I modded my i5 Air last year and saw a good improvement and have been running the Mod on my M1 air for a few weeks now and it's been stellar. My Cinebench R23 scores are consistently around 7750 - 7780. I have the base model with 8/7 cores which does not have the black thermal foam pad that Linus removed, there's some speculation that it was only fitted to the 8/8 core to slightly improve the the 8/8 core score over the base model.

Some of us never take their laptop of the desk, sometimes even cooling pad, so this would be a way for them. Also, pads have their own thermal ratings, some are 8x more conductive than others, so configuration and fine-tuning for your use case is possible.
