I created my own shim to use only if I'm not getting a good cut. I ran a laminating pouch through my laminator and created a clear plastic sheet. You can them trim it down to fit into your machine. It's not super thick like metal and it still has some "give" to it. It doesn't flatten over time the way a cardstock shim does so it can be used over and over again. If someone needs a slightly thicker shim they can laminate a piece of cardstock to have the thickness of the cardstock added to the thickness of the laminated pouch.

Love this tip. I got a laminated piece as packing material and use it but it is getting warn so this is a great option. I was thinking of using a sheet of acetate from packaging but this seems more durable. Thanks.

I was so pleased Ken mentioned this as well Carol. I have seen a number of videos on flattening plates by putting them in a very hot oven and I have known for some time that when you heat plastic toxins can be released. I would not insult the provider of those videos but it's very concerning when being told to do something dangerous.

I have a Gemini and used your technique to flatten my plates and it worked like a dream. I did one thing different though. I didn't remove them after 20 min or so, I actually waited till the water cooled right down. My plates came out perfectly flat. One plates had one die cut mark in it and you can't even tell anymore, its gone! , talk about a WOW moment. The other plate's marks decreased significantly but can still see some remnants of die cuts in it. But all in all, I couldn't be happier for them now being the next best thing to new :) Tyvm for sharing this with us!! ... and I thank your hubby too!

Thanks for sharing, Jennifer. I´ve been doing the hot water procedure for more than a year, except that I leave the plates in soapy water to loosen the paper fibers trapped in them, since hot water expands the material it´s easier to brush off the residue. It works for me.

I am so glad you showed the double sided Gemini plates. I purchased a set when they came out over a year ago, and kept asking on tons of videos if they could be used on single dies. No one ever responded that I can recall... I even questioned on the Facebook Crafters Companion posts... A few months ago i broke down and started using one, and to my absolute amazement and shock, it has NEVER warped and has cut great. I think they will be my only future purchase on plates. I have the warped clear plates, and plan on using your boiling water method to try and straighten them out. Taping my plates did not work for me. I love my Gemini Jr... and with you sharing this tip others will not be afraid of using the double sided plates for regular dies. I guess I was afraid my dies would somehow warp themselves using these fantastic plates and be ruined. Thank you so much for helping us crafters out who may not have the resources you have... sharing your info has been a life saver for many of us ! Thanks to Ken too... Get a Magic Mat and your top plate for your Big Shot shouldn't warp ... at all! I got the Magic Mat and absolutely no warping from my Big Kick. I LOVE it. But my Gemini warped it! So I won't ever use my MM in the Gemini again.

I had 2 very badly warped clear plates and a warped shim. I tried your system but gave them much less time, I could actually see them levelling out, but it still worked 😊 thank you for the idea.

I have passed this vid on to many people because for me, it has been the best for good results and your hubby explains it so it makes sense. My hubby was a metallurgist for 25 yrs. and when I asked if cutting your punches through aluminum foil sharpens them, as it didn't make sense to me, he laughed. I said, people make vids on this but he said the metal that is sharpening another metal surface has to be harder that what is being sharpened and aluminum is one of the softest metals out there and all it is doing is dulling punches which made sense to me. We used to live in a VERY old house and it was always fun to show visitors how the bottom of the glass in our window was thicker than the top! We never did replace those windows because they were well made (and a fun conversation piece).

Hello! A few added things: - The double sided plates will be back in stock soon! *** UPDATE: The green double sided plates have not warped at all. It does wear after ton of of die cutting (1000+ passes), but I just used the other side and continued. So - as with any cutting plates - they will have to be replaced at some point but not due to warping. *** REMINDER: Cutting plates are meant to be replaced eventually. Eventually all plates will wear too much, break, etc. But I find these tricks help to make them easier to work with for the life of the plates! (aka no warping) - Someone asked if the double sided gemini plates will dull your dies. i have not noticed that happening, and i have mass-produced-die-cut with them. and i would assume they wouldn't dull them as those plates were designed for it. That is my guess! - I have not tried these double-sided plates with other machines. - I do not think flattening plates will effect the life of a plate. But it is hard to say and be sure. Plates are expected to have a limited life span and be replaced at some point anyway. I normally don't tape the empress, and use empress plates with it only. And I don't have problems with them warping. 🤷‍♀️

Well what’s interesting is that these plates are made for double sides die cuts but warp less because they are made stronger than the regular plates. Im all for reducing the layers that is needed t get the same outcome, especially when it is less work for maintenance. 😌 Its the gemini thats new to me, not purchasing new cutting plates. Ive had mega dozens of those.

I tried the boiling water thing with one of my green plates because I thought it would get rid of so much white stuff embedded in the plate. It was not warped. I thought it was paper. It did not get rid of the white stuff and very little paper stuff came out. BUT I have a feeling that procedure was not good for those particular plates because now the plate is chipping chunks of plastic off on the one side that is always against the cutting side of the die. It's almost like a layer is coming off. I have only had the plates since Sept. 7th and have not done nearly the cutting that you undoubtedly do, Jennifer. So I ordered a new set. For now I turned the plate over and will use it that way until it needs replacing. Then I will move the other plate I'm using now to the side that's getting all the cutting and put one of the brand new ones in it's place. (Clear as mud?) Anyway. I so love not having to add shims or mats or metal sheets, etc. Just the two clear and two green. I did not tape mine as it was really no problem. Would it be better to tape them, though?

My crafting has been elevated to new heights by watching your videos. You and your videos are TOTALLY AWESOME as is your desire to share you ideas and spread the joy! My first attempt at "unwarping" was not as successful as I had hoped, but I determined the reason was that the pot of water that I set on top did not have enough weight. I had much better luck when I added more weight to that top pot. Rather than getting a bigger pot with more water (and the chance of it spilling out), I put a pizza pan on top of the pot and added an item that was very heavy. Love this. I have another hint. I have extended plates and large Gemini plates that will not fit under a pot fully. I use a jelly roll pan (cookie sheet with sides) and put in a small amount of boiling water and the plate. Then I put another jelly roll pan on top. Add more boiling water and then a heavy pot on top. This gives even pressure throughout so no end curls or water bubble blips to deal with.

Me too. I also discovered that I can put them in my dishwasher. I don't have to boil water then! I have the large gemini also. I put all the prongs of my bottom dishwasher rack down (all of them will lay down rather than stand up. I then put a large cookie sheet, my plate(s), another cookie sheet on top and a heavy pot on top if that 2nd cookie sheet. Turn my dishwasher on and walk away. When the cycle, including the dry cycle is done and the water in the pot has cooled, I come back and dump the pot of water out and remove the cookie sheets and my plates are flat again! I figured this out bcz I was tired of getting water all over my counter when doing the cookie sheets on my counter with boiling water since my sink is a double and not big enough to accommodate the larger cookie sheets. That being said, DO NOT PUT YOUR CUTTING PLATES FREESTANDING IN THE DISHWASHER. THEY WILL CURVE UP LIKE NO OTHER. I HAD HEARD GINA K SAY SHE JUST PUTS HERS IN THE DISHWASHER AND THEY COME OUT GREAT SO THAT'S WHAT I DID. I was able to fix them by boiling water and softening them enough to get a less of a curve in them and then I did the cookie sheet thing in my dishwasher and to my surprise that's how they came out flat again. Otherwise I was going to be buying 4 new plates

I have recently received a used Gemini junior machine the plates are not to bad at the minute but if I do the tip in this video, does the pot that goes on top have to have boiling water in as well? Or could I just boil the kettle then pour that in the plates and put like an empty sauce pan on top? Sorry I’m replying to. Your comment it won’t let me comment otherwise

Jennifer in February I bought a Platinum 6 machine and within a month my plates were warped and I was beside myself on what to do. I of course ordered new plates, but they took time to arrive. So I put the old plates in the dishwasher without much success. They were cleaner, then I decided to rotate them with every cut. This was easy because Spellbinders has printing on one end of each plate. When I finished die cutting I would insert the Label end in differently each time I die cut. This helped to straighten out my plates and LOL I am still using the old plates and they work beautifully. I will try straightening out my Gemini plates with your method and I ordered the double sided plates. Thank you so much for all this information, you are the best.

I just saw this video this week. I tried the boiling water method and girl, let me tell you, it worked! I had to do it twice, but that's ok. I did sit it outside on a paver and had to place added weight on top of the pan lid. I left it outside for about 45 mins-1hr (only because I forgot it was outside). When I took the pan off (the second time), the cutting plate was as straight as the day I bought it. I'm so jazzed about this method. Thank you!!!

Thanks Jennifer for your months of checking out machines for us and of course your tips. I have all of the Manuel die cutting machines but bc I now have arthritis and it hurts my hands to keep manually rotating those handles I'm buying a electric machine in at the end of this month (Jan 2022) I' ve been leaning towards a Gemini but now I don't know if it should be Anna Griffin's or a Gemini. If there are ladies out there that can give me their opinion if they have either or both I'd appreciate the feedback as this is the LAST one I want to buy. Jennifer, I had to laugh when you introduced your husband as a nerd because I am extremely proud of my physicist/scientist nerd husband and all our nerdy friends. I don't know which one to recommend but there is also a new electric one by Sizzix out that is called the Sizzix Switch. You might want to look into that one as well.

Hi Jennifer, my Gemini Jr plates came out so good, it almost looked like new (WOW), my Gemini needed a little more weight in the water so I added a brick and that helped and it came out very straight. Oh my gosh! My cutting plates were so warped I had already added a new set to my next order. I had seen the video for the oven method, and thought what the heck I’ll give it a try as I will have a new set coming if it didn’t work. Then, I saw your video and tried it instead. It worked! Total game changer!! I have removed the cutting plates from my order as my old ones are like new! I am going to wait a couple of days before using them just to give them more time to set. Thanks for this update. Since switching to a self healing mat, only the mat has warped, not the cutting plates. I have tried 3 different brands of self healing. They do straighten using a heat tool. I usually want until all three are badly warped before getting the heat tool out. Just ordered the Gemini jr. double sided cutting plates. (Plus a few items from my wish list. You can’t just order one thing, right!?!)

I heated water a small(5”) and medium (8”) flat-bottomed saucepan til boiling. Put plate in 9x13 heavy aluminum cake pan in the sink. Poured water from medium pot in the pan over the plate and put small pot with boiling water on the middle of the warp. (Small pot pressed on the middle bulge.) Filled a larger 10” pot with tap water and balanced it on the medium pan for weight! After about 20 min, I poured the water from the large pot into the pan so the plates would cool and harden with the weight of the small pot still on it. Poured water from the medium pot also (can scrub with a bit of detergent and a brush if needed. Good improvement in the 6 warped plates I tried.

I've kept all of my old, warped cutting plates and every time when I was stashing them away my first thought was always "why r u keeping these, u won't use them again." and my next thought was always "well, u never know." This proves everyday is a school day. I have been doing the hot water straightening for a while. My enquiring mind loved the explanation from Ken. I will also pass on to my boys the fact about the glass in stain glass window, We will have a look next time we are in church. I’ve always thought it was the way the glass was made. This is CRAZY!!!! I flatten three old plates (and they cleaned up nicely as part of the process) in about 5 minutes (it only took a couple of minutes per plate) and I am ecstatic with the results!!! Love it, and thanks to the hubby for the explanation. (Which I didn't think was overly technical, I have to explain non stick cookware coatings to ppl with no materials knowledge, so know it is hard to do...well done!) The plasic additives are also why you should not use nonstick coated pans on high heat, since dangerous things can offgas if you get past a certain temp, like the plates. That is the PFOA thing ppl are on about with those, and it can get nasty. (Offgasses at 600 degrees F, so stick to medium heat) It is similar to your metal cookware, and why you should never add cold water to a hot stainless steel or other metal piece. All that steam looks like you are accomplishing some kind of great cleaning, but in reality is destroying your cookware. Metal is a crystalline structure, so like the cutting plates, heat will relax that structure. As it heats, it will expand and sag, so applying cold water will freeze that structure in whatever configuration it is in when you do....which is how stainless and other metal cookware gets warped, and next to impossible to unwarp. Also why plastic with a crystalline structure would not take it as well, so lucky for us the plates are not! At least with the glass type of plastic, you can reset with heat....wouldn't work as easily with a crystal matrix. :) And is also why waiting for them to cool is the key...it allows them to reset their structural memory to a flat state. Now, off to see if I can rescue some of my old plates...thanks so much for this!!!! :)

I have always done everything you’ve mentioned here using my Gemini full sized machine. It all works well. The only warping I get is in the plastic shim, which I think, over time is inevitable. I just tried this, and although my 3-year-old plates aren’t warped (I turn them over every run through), I was amazed at how the boiling water cleaned my plates! I usually wash them every few months to remove residue from tape, but they have NEVER BEEN THIS CLEAN EVER! I can’t believe how much paper fiber and dye was embedded in the crevices. I’ll be doing this on a regular basis from now on. 😁

THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! I used your hot water fix today on 6 warped plates YEH it worked on them all! BUT WAIT THE BEST THING OF ALL--- I accidently used a die that was a deep cut die whoops big cut in my plate. THE HOT WATER METHOD took out the groove it had put in my plate with no problem! Also i had a problem with my pot covering the plate completely so i found a metal pan to fit over the plate and then put the weight pot in it! Problem solved. Thank you again I love your shows. thank you for the tips - I also keep one of my cutting plates as a "do not cut plate" . Since I don't cut into it, it doesn't seem to warp and therefore I always have a flat surface to run through my machine. I have also purchased the self healing cut mats and have great success with those

Thank you. It is always fun hearing the “geeky” explanation. My Husband is a nerd too and has a chemistry/physics background. There is a lot of pressure being applied to the plates. Us crazy hard core creators make these machines work hard for us. My biggest problem is dark cardstock getting embedded in the cut lines, which I just scrub out….need to try the hot steamy water. =) I don’t think the plates were made to last forever as some think. At the end of the day these are cheap machines for what some of us put them through. I just expect to have to replace plates every so often.

Just this afternoon I threw out a couple of warped plates and ordered more. Came into craft room and found your post. Dug the plates out of the trash and started this video. Couldn't wait stopped video ran into kitchen and put a pot of water on to boil. Came back and watched the rest of this wonderful informative video. I also had tried the hot water method but it didn't work for me but placing the hot and heavy pot on the plate makes great sense. I can't wait to see the results. Great video on preserving and fixing our cutting plates Jennifer! One little tip I'd like to add if I may, which helps make it easy to know when it's time to 'flip' your cutting plate and use the other side, to reduce warping. This is when the centre feels like it's springing up if you put pressure with your finger in the centre of the plate, that's the time to flip it, and cut into the convex side. Essentially, if you rotate your plates regularly, and always cut into the slight convex side (as you know, if you cut a bunch on the same side this happens), this will even the plate back out again. I have Sizzix Big Shot plates and this works really well to extend the life on these. I'm so totally going to try your boiling water and pressure treatment on my very warped eBosser plates though. I bought that machine before leaving the UK and learning the 'rotate regularly' trick! So those plates will benefit from your clever repair trick, thank you so much! Thanks to your hubby too for his fabulous explanation.

When my large plate split I cut it in half, filed the rough edge and now have 2 smaller plates for when I'm using small dies. Saves throwing the plates away and I only use my large plate for large dies

This was such a simple to do fix and I appreciate you sharing it (smoothing out warped plates), Jennifer - plus the sciency explanation. The cathedral fact was SO interesting! Currently have a Sizzix plate in hot water with a saucepan sitting on it. I have just moved house so ditched the really old, warped plates, so was excited to find a warped one, lol.

When you use a card stock shim, do you reuse that same piece of card stock or do you recommend just using it one time and throwing it out? I bought a self-healing mat for my Platinum 6 and use that on the bottom of the sandwich, instead of my bottom cutting plate and I have no warping anymore! Thank you for all you do
