R290 is what every ac should be using today. Heating and cooling industry is a cheap joke.

That’s no shit! Imagine how angry I was when I found out what r22 is after we brazed the line without knowing if there was any Freon in the damned line! And then! When I found out that r290 is propane! I spent $240 on 4lbs of r22 last year….and fixed my ac myself! Because hvac guys think they’re too good to work on old machines or even sell a new one to someone who doesn’t own a brand new home! Discrimination if I’ve ever seen it!

The pressures listed on the label are system test pressures. With refrigerant flooding back to the compressor this is creating a situation where the incoming refrigerant can wash the lubrication right out of the bearings, and diffuse into the oil. It is best to charging unit by superheat or subcooling depending on what your metering devices.

Equivalent charge to R12/R22 OZ listed on the unit is about half. Ice on your big suction line to me is a sign of being over charged. You'll be flushing the oil out of your compressor leading to premature failure.

Great that the AC recharge is holding up! The R290 seems like it cools pretty good. Too bad that your outdoor weather sensor got damaged, cool looking thunderstorm formation!

That's good! Yeah the system evaporator and condenser coils may need some cleaning etc. Looks like your weather station is a LaCrosse, I wonder if these anemometer cups in the link would replace the broken ones on yours. www.ebay.ca/itm/WCTX144W-La-Crosse-Technology-Replacement-Wind-Cup-Assembly-Only-for-TX141W-/273095394403?_trksid=p2385738.m4383.l4275.c10

@@skyewrighter3493 R290 is a drop in replacement for R22. You use less R290 and the suction and discharge pressures are lower.

R290 is a more efficient refrigerant than R22, a third of the mass flow is required.

Frosting on your compressor means either your high side is plugged or it needs more gas.

How was the electric bill after the change? I heard is uses 30% less energy because it is way lighter than R22 and the compressor does not work as hard. Very curious is it made an impact on the electric bill.

From the studies I have seen, I doubt that R290 would be more efficient than the R22 the system was designed for. At best, it might match R22's efficiency. If the system was redesigned to use R290 it may be more efficient, but using a refrigerant the system wasn't designed for is never going to be ideal.

and a coo-responding drop in system capacity, but slightly more efficient if not over charged.

You're not going to see much of a difference because that old a/c runs that huge fan at one speed, full, all the time. I think where you would see more of a difference is in a split mini that has an inverter

@Steve L the refrigerant runs inside too. It's a good post-apocolyptic fix, needs a smaller piston likely, along with an automatic vent and leak sensor to be safe. But seriously, good to know this can work in an old R22 system to keep us cool when heat stroke is the alternative.

So, mixed refrigerant, no reclaiming on old R12, and indoor AHU not fire proof? FFS you are dumping propane to your system and you didn't get a certified indoor unit for that? A few pounds of propane, if diffused throughout your house and mixed perfectly with air, can level your house to ground!

Would have to be a huge leak that leaks out completely in less then a hour to be dangerous in my setup

What about the millions of natural gas lines, and homes with 200 gallon propane tanks plumbed into them? The only hazard here in my mind would be a technician unaware of a flammable refrigerant being present.

8-16 ozs of propane is not going to level a home.. Please!!! 160lbs maybe . A small home. Natural gas turned on for an hour or 2 full blast might level your home. But that would be way more than a few hundred pounds.

R22 is methane with a bit of flour one and chlorine and I think butane….and is absolutely not worth $120/lb! It’s bs…what’s gonna happen when they ban the other “ozone depleting refrigerant” co2? They gonna send u to the scrap yard? Or what about ammonia which is also said to be depleting the ozone layer ? All lies!
