thanks for the idea. I have 2 questions: 1. Would it damage the lubrication on the tape? 2. Don't you need to clean the white/grey mold or shedding that come from the other side of the tape which is in contact with the tape head and tape path? Isn't most of the residue is coming from that side?

1. Not sure about it 🤔, I think that white/grey residue is related or lubricant itself (degraded of course) Usually if lubricant dried out cassette will be squeaky noisy . It did not happen with my cassettes . 2. Yes you need give a working serfice a clean , very gentle , it will be some dirt , but from what I discovered 90% of that white/grey residue accumulated on the opposite side of the tape. Cleaning only working serfice not helping .... Can be Three stages of this problem as well . 1.light . When residue fall out very monor .Playing this tape few times , Cleaning heads . And problem will dissappear. 2. My case . Bad . But going over several times , checking, going again will solve problem. 3. If problem severe 😕, 😕, possible to clean , digitize or keep listening , but problem will come back overtime and recording on such tape not going to be right experience.

it is not a dirt, it is a hardened lubrication. over time it changed consistency. in worst case as with TDK MA-XG it can crystalize and kill your deck heads in a single 15 minutes run.

Good, I am using an old Walkman modified as a rewinder

It depends on a tape , how bad problem, case by case , for some it 🤔 is only temporary fix , if not used mould will re appear in some minimal form , for some it is Permanent fix , the higher quality , say Metal multi layer tape , the better chances

Why some audio cassette leaves brown dust on tape head but the Sony make cassettes never leave any dust even if not used for one year ?
@kravchuk0073 жыл бұрын
Because they old or used in bad machines , which did mechanical damage )depends which sony , they all do ,sooner or later heads need a clean
@huhummmmmmm3 жыл бұрын
old can mean here that the binder (glue) that keeps the metal particles stuck to the plastic tape is failing .. in that case it actually comes off in quite some chunks usually
