**IMPORTANT, PLEASE READ** 👉 Where is the CUTICLE? by Doug Schoon bit.ly/3q5PgQH

So what do you call the skin which surrounds the rest of the nail, not the proximal nail fold? I always thought the cuticle was all around the nail!!! This is where the first confusion comes in. I cannot find a term for that surrounding tissue. That is where most of my problems are.

That was a very interesting read. For years I have been removing the keratinized PNF believing it was the cuticle as this was what I was told. I am a cuticle picker and I have now learnt that I am a PNF picker, no wonder my nail plate is so horrible.

Thank you so much for this education, you are helping me so much. I think due to acrylics for so long and having them removed improperly the skin around my nails is hard and is actually painful. I am trying to find a good nail tech who does manicure the way you do. Do you have any advice on how to find a good nail technician ? Thank you so much. ❤ Nicole

This is how a real manicurist takes care of the hands, as if you would the rest of your body. Nails techs just want to make it look good, and do a fast job get paid but really over time you're just destroying the natural part of your nail that takes so long to grow back. I appreciate your patience and your craft in doing a service the proper way. I am so glad I found someone on KZbin who is a naturalist! thank you😊

Just an FYI for the male voice talking about vitamins and supplements… I worked for a pharmacy and the pharmaceutical owner told me that the majority of the products on the market are not fda regulated and they don’t actually contain exactly what they list on the label. He said when he or his family need a supplement (that the doctor recommended for them to take) he would only buy the brands that take part in the 3rd party USP testing which is an impartial testing program that brands can voluntarily take part in. Only a small percentage of the companies on the market actually have that accreditation from submitting their products to testing…. Look into that folks!

Nature Made is a brand of vitamins and suppliments found in many American grocery stores and pharmacies. It is USP verified (a 3rd party verification). 🙂 I also noticed many products with labels of 3rd party verification at Vitamin Shoppe. I haven't checked myself, but I'd also suggest GNC, or any other health food store or grocery store that heavily markets healthy living and healthy eating.

PS. I agree with the multivitamin comment. There is a lot of much-too-little in multivitamins. If you need iron or vitamin D, you’re not going to get near enough in a multivitamin. Everyone in the northern hemisphere should take 2000IU vitamin D (unless they are told otherwise by their doc) needed from an early age especially for women and bone health. If low in iron, establish that there is not a malabsorption syndrome like Celiac or pernicious anemia, and have vitamin B12 checked. Consume foods high in iron content to avoid having to take constipating iron supplements. That’s my $0.02 worth today! 🥰

I use oil at least once a day on and near the nail, and also bought the Germanikure files….My grandmother did nails and I learned from her to let nails go polish-free regularly and to not cut the cuticle! Thanks Anna for sharing your knowledge. I am too rough on my cuticles & proximal fold. Old habits die hard. I wore acrylic nails for years and the trauma & damage has been long lasting. Those old manicures gave me bad nail care habits. I’m learning, though! My biggest issue these days is dryness and hang nails. I’m older (61) and oils have become a huge part of my skin/nail care. Consistency is the key and it’s hard to use these products as often is I REALLY need them. ❣️❣️

I love the shape and the health of your nails. Even though they are kept fairly short, the nails has a lovely oblong shape. I am working on my nail folds gently and using the jojoba oil daily. I filled a small roller ball vial with jojoba oil which travels neatly in my handbag, so I can apply it on the go. I am working on my hard skin on the sides of my nails which keeps getting a ragged edge. The urea cream seems to be helping, albeit slowly.

I'm late to this party but had to share this story with you. Our youngest son was holding a door open for me but it was too heavy and as I passed through, his fingers got caught in the door as it closed on the hinge side. Long story short we ended up in the ER and an orthopedic doctor had to do surgery on his index finger. The nail matrix lifted and was poking through his skin at the base of the nail....like past the cuticle line. It was AWFUL.... poor baby! He was only 3yrs old. The doctor explained that if he didn't reattach that properly, his nail would be misshapen forever and wouldn't grow in like a normal nail. Good content, I subscribed 😊

OMG! I learn something new with every video! I like the idea of shaping nails with the colour still on! My hairdresser will often cut my (very curly) hair dry to get the shape right! And may I say that your videos are my current selfish indulgence. I have a multitude of hobbies which I’ve turned to over the years, needlework and Zentangle to name a few, but they require some concentration and focus. My job has been so overwhelming I really needed something more soothing and relaxing to wind down with. You have encouraged focus on regular nail care and great health tips, and again learning something new with every video is still stimulating. With information overload, I don’t listen to podcasts, but I will often do my manicures while watching, with guilty pleasure, Rupaul’s Drag Race!!

So I took my nails down and stopped painting them and used a lot if hand cream and cuticle oil. They started getting a lot stronger and I continued keeping them very short. They were so thin and weak but now they're much better. I don't think I'll be using acetone like I was!

I found your channel last evening, I want to tell you I think your nails are so beautiful… I stopped going for manicures 8 years ago. I love doing my own nails, and since I have , I no longer have living skin around my cuticles. When I used to go for a bi monthly manicure, my living skin was getting thicker and thicker.. I like to keep them short. I also do not go for pedicures anymore either… I never use polish on toe nails Besides the money I save, I love that I have no more living skin around my cuticles. I now know from watching your videos that it’s important to keep your nails very moisturized, with the right product. I am vegan so I worry about deficiencies, although blood work always comes back ok.. I subscribed♥️

Your nails are beautiful and classic. Love it! I had just decided to spend the next year pampering my finger and toe nails. Unfortunately, my nail beds on both hands are damaged from a dog attack that bit into my nails and also broke several fingers. I wanted to camouflage the damage with acrylics but I believe acrylics damaged all my nails. Plus I’ve had intermittent low thyroid issues that make me almost completely lose my pinky nails. I stopped acrylics over 6 months ago. Also dropped a heavy metal box on my big toe which cracked the toenail very far back in the quick and it’s been splintering off. So I’ve got work to do to get my nails revived. I figured as it is winter, easier to sleep with cotton gloves and socks on at night so I’ll treat all my nails to a nice oil, and the kerasal ointment you recommend before bed, slip into the cotton socks and gloves. Don’t know if I can reverse the nail damage from the dog bites and thyroid issues, but I’m going to try. Dermatologists have not been helpful in helping my nails and have said it’s just a part of my life, and here’s my bill. Your channel has been very helpful. Thank you!

For the past 4 weeks I have been using oil after hand washing and doing weekly oil soaks, and pushing back my cuticle every day. I have removed the cuticle about once a week using the method you describe. I am keeping them short ( I was a buffer ). I notice that the nail plate appears much longer which I have noticed on many of your client stories. I wonder if it is because the living skin is no longer sticking to my nail as much and staying back.

Hi. Thanks for sharing. Regular nail care and keeping the living skin pushed back can give the appearance of longer nail plates.

I just found your channel and am so thankful! I've been tapped in the cycle of cutting what I thought were my cuticles for like 40 years. It all started in my teens when I somehow used this Revlon cuticle cutter stick thing. Then because the skin always grows back thick and ragged, I'd have to cut them again. Thank goodness, I now understand the anatomy of the nail and know what to do! 🙏 I have some cuticle oil, an orange stick and just bought some foot cream with urea in it (which I will also use on my dry and callous prone feet!). My hands have always been so dry and it's hard to find hand creams that work. Anyway, my question is, "what do I do once the skin around my nails starts to grow and I have longer rough bits?" My habit will be to trim the skin but should I do everything mentally possible to not touch it and just add the urea moisturizer and oil until the skin starts to go back to normal? How long do you reckon this process will take? I want lovely looking proximal nail skin like yours!! Thanks
@ChameleonLady2 жыл бұрын
Ditto! I am trying to regrow my sidewall skin to be healthy but there are often dry bits almost dangling off that I figure can't be healthy living skin so I trim just that tiniest bit off, being exceedingly careful to not cut more. When I was younger, I used to wear polish for a week and then give them a break for a week. Nowadays I will wear polish for 4-5 days and then take a day off to oil and moisturize the crap out of my nails.
@TheSalonLife2 жыл бұрын
I think that this is the best approach. Wear it for 5-6 days and a day or at least overnight off. I have zero problems with wearing 1-2 coats of clear polish on my nails non stop and I change it weekly but everyone is different. I also think that there is a difference in wearing 1-2 coats of clear polish (perhaps more flexibility and less occlusivity) than pigmented polish. My nails are super healthy now.

Before I got into gel polishes, manicures/preparations for gel polishes or dip powders, all I did was after a shower, I would get my face cloth that I used to exfoliate my skin with my face wash cleanser , I then use the same wet/moist face cloth and remove the dead cuticle by gently rubbing it on my nails and toe nails, while it’s still soft, and moist. And put that face cloth for washing. It kept my cuticles and skin in check and would only take a few mins …and then moisturize my whole body, hands and toes.!!!! Not hard at all. We don’t need to set aside time for a special manicure. I’ve gone back to this method again and I’ve stopped doing manicure before I apply gel polish, just removal the old polish and apply the new polish.

Thank you for showing us how you do it. I have the nail file and the pink cuticle eraser. I needed to see you use the pink eraser. I do great on my left hand bc I am right handed. Doing my nails with the left hand is a bit challenging to say the least. I also found out how sharp the point is also. Yikes. I love my files thanks to you. And I learned to do my right hand without as much difficulty. My cuticles are extremely dry and I admit I don't pamper them very much between manicures. I have been using the Dazzle Dry polish. It stays on so well. I'm still debating about the OPI Nature Strong or just stick with what I have. The 'regular'. I have difficult nails. They are peeling, cracking bc I don't use cuticle oil like I should. Weird as it sounds, I use Nail Tek no. 4 for the base coat, 2 OPI color coats and the fast drying top coat Seche Vite. My nails flourish. I've tried so many polishes and combinations it's pathetic. Envy chips and cracks on my nails. What ever works 🧐 sorry, I had a lot to say. Blessings ❤️

Hi Im from Australia and have just discovered your channel and have bought Jojoba oils, cuticle sticks etc. to manicure my own nails removing the right area/cuticle. I never get a manicure and cut my own cuticle PNF - what I thought was cuticle! Ive also both the Blue Cross cuticle remover! A game changer! I have thin bendy nails on my hands and am looking forward to hot oil treatments as well as giving myself PROPER simple gentle nail manicures. Ive done this on my feet and it feels fantastic knowing what I am doing. Questions, can I use castor oil for hot oil treatments? Secondly, is Thin Lizzy Pink Armour Nail Gel or Eveline Cosmetics Diamond Hard and Shiny Nails okay to use ? These are what I bought before watching your channel. If not what is it I can get in Australia that I can use on my nails for a simple shine without damaging the nail? Thank you so much for your videos...love and light from Sydney Australia.

Now I know, why my nails were "addicted" to really harsh manicures, because everytime I was for a manicure, they cut the proximal nailfold, so the skin literally grew back in one week and every manicure my skin grew back faster and thicker and they kept removing it every time 😖 I thought they knew what they are doing and now I am left with really bad skin and I literally do everything for my nails daily, I moisturize them many times a day with creams, oils and serums, but it seems like the thick skin can't hold any moisture and I don't know what to do, to help my skin to recover from these bad manicures! Do you have any tips, how I can help my nails?
@parallelwelt012 жыл бұрын
Hi Jana Schn, for how long are you treating your nail folds the way you describe above (with oils etc.)? Maybe they just need time and you just have to be patient? Look at "Anna's Nail Advice", she has a whole playlist. There you will find everything you need to know. Have nice day!

Hi Jayna! It just takes time and care. This didn’t happen overnight so it won’t get better very fast. Skin heals. Think about scrapes, cuts and scabs. They eventually get better. How long have you been caring for your skin and how long have the skin been cut for? What creams exactly are you using? Can you send me a picture?
@TheSalonLife2 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Thank you for your comment! I missed the original question :). Thank you for responding to it. I also ask how long Jayna has been caring for the nails vs how long the skin has been cut. It will get better :)
@buddyandme05112 жыл бұрын
@@TheSalonLife Thank you for responding! 😊 My skin was cut like this for maybe 1½ - 2 years and since February I use creams with Urea and Panthenol like Mixa Cica Repair and natural oils. When I moisturize my nails and cuticles they just look okay for maybe 20min and then they are really dry again! Every couple days I do Oil baths with olive oil and coconut oil, because I feel like these oils are the best for my skin, after I tried many other oils...

Hey this may be a stupid request but can you do a video or suggest a video that shows the proper way to polishes nails. Thank you.

Hi Lizzy! Not a stupid idea whatsoever! I think it’s a great idea and I think I should finally record a video on how to polish your own nails.

My ADHD kicks in and I pick my "cuticle" now I know it is not the cuticle, but the fold of living skin. I am working on this. That aside, my ridges, vertical, chip at the upper tip of my short, newly filed nails. Cutting them down still finds the corrugated ridge and the nail chips there. Is a ridge filler my last resort? Thanks for your expertise. Love this channel.

Hi, I came across your video today and I love how healthy your nails are. I have had overlay put on my nails twice to help protect my natural nails, I keep them you're length. However I find that the overlay doesn't last long when I keep my hands in water...it may last 2 to 3 weeks. Do I always have to keep gloves on my hands when washing dishes?

Hi Michelle! Thank you for you comment. Honestly, it would help the wear time if you wore gloves when doing dishes. Have a great day! - MSL

Hi, love this video. A friend purchased a bottle of pure tea tree oil that comes in a bottle much like nail polish. I don't have fungus, but she said to make the nails strong and cuticle soft...another person said it pulls the nail from the nail bed and falls off. I'm afraid to use it, so not sure if I should or not.
@TheSalonLife2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mel, Tea Trea is not a good idea. Pure essential oils are very different than carrier, non fragrant oils. Pure Tea Trea is very drying.

@@TheSalonLife thank you, I was confused and I felt you were the right person to ask. Thanks so much. Ill check out your Amazon page and see what you suggest. I was a nail biter and have recently been inspired to take care of my nails better, so I found your YT channel. Very enlightening and inspiring. I just need a good moisterizer for the skin around my nails, I've been cutting them for years because that's what they did at the salon...for years...the skin needs help and I was hoping I could just moisturize before I get into polish etc. Healthy nails is my first priority.

Pre-pandemic I was somewhat obsessive about hand washing but now I’m out of control ... I wear my nails totally natural and have for quite sometime ... The constant hand washing has dried out my hands and the cuticles are tough and stiff ... Keeping my CeraVe cream ( on ) is a challenge as you can imagine ... I’ve recently been using very good bar soap which leaves my hands extremely soft but my cuticles are not as forgiving ... I know there’s not much I can do because of the constant hand washing ... Making matters worse I have a terrible mental “ coping issue “ that makes me trim daily with cuticle scissors ... (Sometimes ) trimming around the nail bed until they bleed or hurt badly ... I know this maybe too much for some of your viewers to read but we’re all human ... Everybody reacts to stress in different ways ... My habit ( kind of ) reminds me of the many reasons a pet parrot or cockatoo will intentionally pull out their feathers ... Unfortunately my toenail cuticles aren’t safe from this habit but my fingernails get worst attention ...Thank you for your video and to anyone else that can relate with my situation .

Hi Pumpkin Pie. I can relate to a degree because I have a tendency to pick at my nails if there is anything to pick at. I try to keep my hands busy and play with a ring or something. Using the terms correctly is very important so we understand each other so let me make a little correction to what you were saying, so you and the viewers learn the proper terminology . I talk more about the terminology here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h2bCnIavr7x8Y9U "The skin around your nails is tough and stiff (not cuticles). The skin around your nails is not forgiving (not cuticles). Your coping issue makes you trim the skin around your nails daily.. sometimes you are trimming around the nail plate (not nail bed) until they bleed. .... Unfortunately skin around your toenails isn't safe from this habit but your fingernails get worst attention." I feel for you and your poor nails. Maybe it would help to talk to someone about how to manage your stress and how to help you with this OCD issue. Many of us deal with anxiety and there are many resources that are very helpful. I know from experience. I benefitted greatly from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and medication. I hope you find something that helps you :) All the best ❤️

@@TheSalonLife You’re so kind, thank you for not judging me ... When I was a young girl I used to watch my mother do it constantly ... Big virtual hugs from New York 🥰

I grew up with the "old school" manicures too. My mom used to cut the skin around her nails to and I did as well. Somehow I managed to stop. I taught my mom to stop cutting her skin too. She is doing great now too! You can do it too! 1 small step at a time!! Hugs!! 🤗

I have a question. I noticed tonight that it looks like I have chipped clear polish on my nails. I keep thinking I need to use more remover, but I still see it. I'm wondering what I'm seeing because it can't be polish since I've used remover. I'd send a picture but I'm really not sure that you'd be able to see it. I only noticed it tonight as I was following your methods for a manicure. Have you ever seen anything like what I'm describing? I love your videos and I'm so happy I found you. Also, I bought Blue Cross today, but it looks thicker than yours, almost like a cream. Not sure if I bought what you use.

They are better for your nail
@TheSalonLife Жыл бұрын
No, they are not. It's a matter of preference. I know many glass tool companies will tell you stories about how much better their tools are but that is pure marketing and their subjective opinion. Proper technique is the most important. These tools are very effective. You can actually do a lot of damage with them when not used properly. I show how to use all kinds of tools on my channel.

I was told that, when filing, I needed to keep the file perpendicular to the nail and always file in one direction. Your nails are lovely and you seemed to run the file back and forth, often at an angle to the end of the nail. Which is correct or are both techniques fine?
