Fixing Delonghi Magnifica S dumping water into drip tray

Note: Since making this video I have found the best O-Ring replacement is "4mm (ID) x 2mm (CS) silicone o-ring" I have seen packs of 10 for under £3 online.

It may be worth considering changing the whole "DeLonghi Infusion Piston Plate", some traders call it a "Coffee Maker Generator", as there are many other o-rings that can wear out, and the infuser piston and pipes get grotty over time. It will make your coffee machine like new and only costs a little over £30 (UK). It will be a bit more effort, I'm told the pipes are hard to refit, but I think well worth the effort. Obviously check that it fits your model as there are a few types.
This was a guide for my Uncle, But it might be useful for a lot of
Delonghi "bean to cup" machines that are dumping the water into the drip tray via the overflow pipe instead of through the infuser.

@user-jm5ew1gd3e Sorry, this is gonna be a bit of a "chick" answer, I just went to the shop bought a multipack of small o-rings and measured the busted o-ring against the new one.. I can say for sure there were about 12 in the pack and the one I used was the smallest one of 12...no measurements on the pack It's the smallest o-ring I've ever saw... Sorry the information can't be better

My Delonghi Eccam 23.210 had the same problem. With your help I solved the problem . the replacement o-ring I put in the machine is from Topline 225PC O-RIng assortment, costing EURO 6. I used their R-03 with I/D 4.5 and section 2. 😀

Excellent video ..... I had the same issue on the Authentica model. Fixed with a 4mm inside diameter x 2mm. Re-assembled using food grade silicone gease on all o-rings

Note: it is normal for some water to accumulate into the drip tray when the infuser changes position, especially when you are generating steam for frothing. Yes, cleaning the clogged valve on the top if the generator will resolve this issue. Contact your local DeLonghi authorized service center for the correct OEM replacement parts.

When you pull the steam knob out there is a little spring on the end to help it stay on, if you just pull it out it can fall off.

I didn't think you can lift the plastic top off with out pulling the steam knob off first. I recall it being split and a little loose, but not loose enough to be able to fall out with out pulling it.

@@andywood2012 You need to remove the steam knob if you want to remove the top. My point was that the steam knob has a narrow spring around the end of it which you have lost, I did the same thing and dislodged the spring on mine, took a while to find it.

This is just a fix for a quite common o-ring issue, you must have another issue entirely. I would suggest buying the whole infuser piston assembly as they are not too expensive, i've seen them for about £30 in the UK.

My machine has been leaking for a while. I thought it was just age then today all water/coffee stopped coming out. Sen this video which I will give a go despite being only moderately 'handy'! My question is the O ring. Is the 4mm ID or OD? About to order 8mm OD, 4mm ID, 2mm width. Does that sound right?

Thanks for bringing that excellent question up,The O-Ring you want is 4mm (ID) by 2mm (CS), and needs to be silicone to last, they are normally red. I'll update the description.

After many calls to different departments at Delongi, and despite their support giving me a exploded schematic to order parts, they where unable to help me. I had to trace the path of the water flow till I was able to see where the water was coming from. I suspected it was the water heater but taking that appart didn't help.

I have the magnifica xs and when I do decalc, it leaks the water all over. Normally, when I turn the machine on or off, it rinses from the normal way but I wonder if this ring would solve that problem as well? I had opened a few months ago and o-rings on the side looked fine. Thank you in advance.

Hi , Thanks a lot for all your vid I bought my DeLonghi Magnifica XS from Costco MN 120 v - 60 HZ 1250 W Type ECAM 22110 B P= 1.5 MPa (15 bar) When I took it to North Africa and by mistake I plugged it in 220 V I smelled little burning. I still can turn it on I can hear the coffee grinding all screen look good with green and yellow light but it doesn't dispense water nor a coffee. Please help.

4.5x2mm worked for me. No idea how long it'll last, it was still a little loose like your 5x2 but did work. Maybe your screwdriver damaged it?

It may of been. I don't recommend replacing the one O-ring though as you can get the whole brew unit for about £30. But if some wants an easier task do make sure the O-ring is designed for heat like I say in the desciption.

@andywood2012 I was wrong anyway, seems it was too big. Water was coming from the head and the drip tray (and also somewhere underneath). I did notice it's also coming from the pipe on the head rather than just the nozzles. These things are a right pain

It's the same pump for steam as it is the hot water, so I'm not sure what's wrong if you can hear the pump when you get steam, but not when you select hot water or a brew. Do you have any issue reported on the display when you brew? Are you getting water anywhere other than where it should be coming out? I would suggest having a look inside to make sure all the water pipes and electrical connections are attached, but it does sound from your description that something is wrong with either a sensor or the system.

Thanks for sharing this information, I have just replaced the o-ring as shown in the video. I still have some water dripping into the drop tray. I have a Dinamica 350.75.S but in many respects have many common parts. The overflow or pressure relief on the ceme valve is dripping the water back to the drip tray. This is more than normal expansion etc. Any ideas on potential root causes? Have you seen these ceme valves fail e.g opening at lower pressures than their 3bar spec?

The O-ring in the fix is the main culprit, but there are plenty of other O-rings in that assembly, which is why I would recommend anyone now to replace the whole brew unit/ Infuser piston, they are not too expensive, I've seen them for about £30 and come complete with all the O-rings that will be the exact specification. I orignaly thought the issue was something like an over pressure release valve above the boiler assembly as I could see quite a lot of calcium deposits between the top and bottom half. There could be a chance that's still an issue for you, I would try replacing the whole piston assembly first as this is a much cheeper option and won't be wasted even if it turns out your boiler assembly needs replacing later.

What's that light brown leakage seen on the right at 4:08? Is it related to this issue? I've got a similar problem with my machine and there's also similar leakage inside my machine though to a lesser degree.

I did think that was the fault at first as there was residue from leakage and even asked Delonghi's UK parts supplier for a technical reference, they emailed me an exploded diagram so I could identify and order the parts, it wasn't a very detailed diagram but I was able to work out that was the hot water and steam generator and that was working fine. I then followed the pipe from the problematic overflow to the brew area at the top.

Hi! I have same machine but the issue might be different, it doesn’t respond to commands, if is plugged in, is playing alone: switching on and off, water comes out and in the end I cannot make any coffee as buttons are not responding to orders. What that might be? Thank you!

I would have to guess but if the ribbon cable oe connectors running from the button housing the the mainboard isn't loose, then maybe you need to replace the button mechanism. You would probably need to contact Delonghi support to find the parts.

Yes, There's an official partner that supplies parts in the UK for Delongi who where kind enough to email me an exploded diagram when I was trying to diagnose the issue with my coffee machine. It didn't really help as it was very low resolution and not fully keyed, and their parts are considerably more expensive as you would expect. As long as you are purchasing food safe, silicone (red) washers of the correct size it should be fine. But I much more recommend replacing the whole piston unit as its so cheap, I've seen them under £30!

Hi, I have this model which has the extra milk container and hot water tap. After using the hot water from the tap I find a puddle of water fill inside the coffee grind bin. Im not sure if this is normal or something is wrong. Any ideas? Thanks

I don't think your problem is related to this issue, it sounds like a seal around the coffee infuser parts. I don't have the machine anymore so its impossible for me to examine, however you might want to think about replacing your infuser/brew unit, it makes your machine make coffee like new.

The O-ring gets tired over time as it is holding back hot water with a lot of pressure. But as I say in the description, it's worth considering a complete "Infusion Piston Plate" instead of just the O-ring. It's under £30 and has a lot of parts that get grubby.

I’m having the same issue with my ECAM250 Magnifica S Smart. It’s dumping approximately 100-125ml of water into the drip tray for each regular coffee it makes (not the long one, and excluding the switch on/off process). It’s still under warranty, but now due to go back to the repair centre for a third time. They keep trying to tell me there’s nothing wrong with it! It’s gradually got worse over the last couple of months, so I know it’s not normal. I have Supplied video evidence too. One CS told me a few ml was acceptable, but not that much. The service centre don’t seem to want to fix it though. Anyone have any ideas how to actually get them to sort this under warranty?

what size of the o-ring used? Is it DIN or AS568 standard size?

I'm not sure what standard it was, the O-Ring that worked was 4mm (diameter) x 1.8mm (thickness), but I think a 4mm x 2mm will fit better. Also make sure it's silicone as they are designed for high temperature and food grade use.

I agree, I did the video quickly just as an instruction for my uncle, I did clean it properly before giving them the machine. My hands are also covered in washing powder as I was also doing some emergency hand washing during the shooting after some one had a little accident with some curry.
