Fixing my biggest Gripes with the Porsche 911 996 Turbo

Been super busy latley but wanted to get something out to get back in the groove of videos! Wanted to prep the 2001 Porsche 911 996 Turbo to be daily driven if I so choose to do so with it. BUT there have been a couple things keeping me from wanting to daily drive this car so. Finally fixing all of that to be able to start enjying this thing everyday!

Some tips from a fellow amateur detailer: Don't go in circles with clay bar. It's a mild abrasive and can cause hazing (though the polishing you did would remove it). Claying in one direction only keeps the scratches in line and minimizes this. With polishing, you generally want to start with your finest compound first. If that doesn't remove the defect you are working on then step up to a slightly more aggressive compound or pad. It helps minimize the risk of burning through the clear coat on unfamiliar paint. I also can't tell 100% from the video, but it looks like your machine is a rotary buffer. If it is an orbital, it has a very short throw. Rotaries can work really fast, but they also cut really fast and put a lot of heat into the paint. Random orbitals are a lot more forgiving. I have a couple from Adam's polishes and I really like them.

Niche Etsy mods are the best. I recently found a miata mirror spacer to drop the rearview down a bit so you can see past a rollbar and it even has a cutout in it to hide an AirTag. Dope video and awesome stuff as always 👌🏻

I've tried those grenades, they just cover up the smell for a few weeks, Biggest thing you can do if you notice a lot of smell when the fans are blowing is pull the blower fan out (usually super easy to access but Porsche sooooo idk) and clean it, did it on my mustang which had cigarette smell and man it helped soooo much

As a Miata guy, specifically a Mazdaspeed version with a 4.10 final drive - I'm jealous your cup holder is off to the side. You literally cannot put anything in your cup holders unless it's a closed Red Bull because thats where your forearm/elbow are at unless you're on the highway. also, blow your polishing pad out between passes!!! My apologies if you were doing that and editing didnt show it, but I've watched too much AMMO NYC to avoid giving unsolicited advice 😂

I use compressed air to clean my orbital pad from application to application. It helps to really get the garbage out of it on first passes when the car has been unloved.

Detailer here yes clay barring does take forever especially if you use an actual clay bar and go until there's no more contaminates on the bar. Also pro tip with the car freshener cans, you can spray it into the cowl vents where the ac pulls in fresh air and it'll circulate it through the system so Everytime you turn your ac on it smells nice and fresh

Do a Fabspeed style X-pipe exhaust. Super easy to do with all the space. A little calculation should get you a sizing for your Helmholtz resonators as well. Mounting them in the first 90 off the down pipe is the best place acoustically to place them.

The resonators I may need to add in at a later point. But that shouldn’t be too bad. Curious how it will sound after just the addition of an X pipe. It’ll still probably drone a good amount of but hoping it removes the tractor sound 😅

@@Smeedia I will say the X pipe will help a lot. The longer exhaust will help with the drone as well. You should weld on some stock oval turbo tips or the GT2 quad tips if you can to fill the bumper openings. If not you can cut your openings to for 997 tips and those tips generally are more appealing.

To get rid of smells you need an ozone machine. Run that, and then do the scent bomb. That’s what I used in my old 14 wrx.

I have been fighting a P0457 Evap leak gas cap loose/ off on my STI for way to long now haha, initial issue was the charcoal in my C canister came apart and clogged the lines, got them unclogged and through the code everything in the evap system has been replaced now but still throwing the code. smoke testing shows now signs of a leak. what else could I be missing? My dad is a 40+ year Subaru tech and he is stumped by it... this is the last thing I need done before getting tuned any ideas?

Don't ceramic coat over a sealant! You need to quickly buff the car to remove whatever is on the paint otherwise the coating won't bond correctly.

From a professional detailer, go slower using a da polisher( about half the speed you were going) and dont hold it on the same spot or go over the same spot alot, you will eat threw the clear. Try to get the entire panel evenly so you dont get spots that are eating threw. Also use lots of product it's more of a cleanup but it will help prevent swirls and burnthrew

No love for the 987 (Cayman)? It’s a pretty fun ride and underrated in my opinion. Obviously 996 is more desirable but I love a good mid mounted boxer engine vehicle. 987 has cupholders though. By the glovebox. Weird if the 986 doesn’t have that.

You're going to have to strip off that chemical guys hybrid wax off before you ceramic coat. You can try washing with dawn dish soap or find something that has citrus in it. I'd alao recommend while rewashing is to let that soap dwell on the paint for a good minute

@@Smeedia that'll work also. You wanna make sure after washing again with the dish soap and that stuff that you "drag" your hand across the paint there's resistance. The ceramic coat has to bond to that in order for you to get the best results with the coating. Also be prepared to spend a lot of time doing this coating. It takes a while to do it and you can't rush through it or it'll be waste of money and time. Another tip is to let the car sit in the garage and away from the elements for a week. That'll give the coating enough time to bond and cure to the paint.

$50,000 🫡 One of the drivers as to why I made the jump was to eat all negative equity I had in the Subarus. I owed like 39K on the blue WRX and Owned the white one. So the white WRX ate all negative equity and gave me a decent down payment on the 911 🫡

They are ridiculously expensive 😂 that is the best shift knob I’ve used and prob the only one I can justify buying 😅BUT I do really like that thing lol
