Fixing my Mug with KINTSUGI - Repair DIY

Hey Everyone! Today I am fixing (and breaking) and few things with a DIY version of the Japanese technique: Kintsugi.
I broke my FAVOURITE mug a few months ago and it isn't made anymore, so I was pretty sad. I decided to try and fix it myself to use as a pencil cup and while doing some research I found the technique of Kintsugi. Kintsugi means "Golden Joinery" and is an old Japanese method of fixing pottery using lacquer mixed with gold dust. I thought it was such a beautiful technique and wanted to try it myself.
So I try three different methods with varying levels of success.
If you have a broken mug or bowl you would like to fix, give this a go - just maybe be a bit more patient than I was!
*Please wear protective gloves or ask for a hand when using Gorilla glue or Epoxys. I really should have worn gloves, but I'm a rebel - if you have sensitive skin, these guys can hurt!
I hope you enjoy this quick little video today :)

Gorilla glue says their epoxy is not food safe. The trick with kintsugi is finding food safe adhesive and paint.

Is that in case you want to eat/drink out of the fixed item? That's a really good point that I hadn't thought of! These were planned to be decorative, but I'll keep that in mind for the future :)

😯 This was so neat and something I have never heard of before! I definitely want to go to a thrift shop and grab some ceramic bowls & cups for my art supplies and try this out now! 😁

It was really fun! And I love the little bowl I broke and put back together. Even though it was so beautiful I felt so bad for breaking it!

So wonderful. Fun and funny. I love Mintaka’s accent and vocabulary. Shakespeare meets Kintsugi! Right on. Thank you.

@@FlaschDJ hmm...it's the same here in the UK I promise 🤣 but sometimes it's better to use less words 🤔 One of my favourite quotes from Stephen King is "Put your vocabulary on the top shelf of your toolbox, and don't make any conscious effort to improve it... One of the really bad things you can do to your writing is to dress up the vocabulary, looking for long words because you're maybe a little bit ashamed of your shot ones." And that's coming from a master of words 😁 Thankyou though, your comment made me smile!

Decoration is still a nice way to keep an old mug :) but definitely don’t use any of these techniques for food or drink use as I’m pretty sure it will be poisonous 😬

I think if you used gold powder and worked it into the plasticine ( I know you didn’t have any on hand ) “Fix That Thing”, I think it would have come out golden. But pretty cool that you tried all the methods. Love it

My concern is a health one (food safety) - I want to fix a cup that i can drink out of. And Im concerned that superglue/epoxy etc, could minutely toxify it. Any thoughts?

I wouldn’t use any of these methods to use with food or drink. I am not sure what you could use as I didn’t look into it. I just use my cup for decoration

A dog broke my plant mug with Golden Pothos in it, it was supposed to be a gift for someone. Pretty sad about it 🥺;__; Can I use this to revive the mug to be able to hold the plant again?
@monkeymintaka
@monkeymintaka 3 жыл бұрын
Hmmm 🤔 is the plant in another little pot? I'm not sure if this would be 100% water proof but you could give it a go. And if not you could put the plant in a drainage boot INSIDE the other cup?

@@monkeymintaka I like the look also. But I was looking for ways to repair and I ran across your post and there is one by Alena Nedz on KZbin, I was trying to share it with you but I can't get it to Link and it's amazing just for future reference to use to save mugs that you want to drink from 😁. Also in my research I discovered this video and to color the glue this gentleman used colored chalked and scrapped just a little bit to color the glue! Well I loved your video but just wanted to share with you what I have also discovered. Have a Blessed Day.

Do these glues contain cyanoacrylate? It sounds like the FDA says food should not be consumed out of things glued together that way.

Just got done watching a kintsugi artist (kzbin.info/www/bejne/inmoho2bdpaebtE) repair a bowl. Looks like the gold lines are thicker there because they actually paint the lacquer on over the lines after the pieces have set, and then add the gold to it. Feel like there might be something there to add to this method.
